Crowd Power: What Is Crowdfunding? | green infographics | Scoop.it

Since its inception as a way to expose new lines of credits outside of traditional bank loans, microfinance has evolved with the ages. Seeded by the Grameen Bank, industry trailblazers like Kiva and Prosper applied the concept of microlending to the Internet, spawning people-to-people lending. The newest breed of microfinance — crowdfunding — is fast growing in popularity. In this infographic, we take a closer look at how crowdfunding works and how viable it is.

Samantha Turner's curator insight, March 2, 2015 3:44 PM

In the midst of a hectic Saturday night I got chatting with one of my regulars at the pub. I would define him as an intellectual, always seeking a good conversation or debate. He always comes across as a well educated man, continuously stumping me mid topic with his vocabulary choice. We got on the topic of my CSR course and along came the idea of crowdfunding. So I thought I would find out what it was all about.

Crowdfunding is the involvement of a group of people, usually anonymous who virtually come together and directly fund projects and organizations of their choice. I particularly enjoyed the graphical representation provided that easily shows the difference between microfinance, microlending, peer-to-peer lending, and crowdfunding. They all have a similar goal but go about it differently. This link also provides a few facts and numbers which is always great.

It allows you to see pros and cons, they also point out the success rate in a variety of categories. I think differentiating them all is great. It provides a platform and gives the reader a base to relate the information on. The infrograph gets even better by showing you some stats on websites that are all based around crowdfunding.

I think its great that people are venturing out into their own world of microfinance. Most seem to be based off of Yunus' work. By providing different platforms of lending I think it reaches a larger audience. Not only can you reach the extreme poor you can also donate to local organizations which may help out in your community. By providing different services that may be similar to Grameen Bank it provides more opportunity. In addition, it also allows all of those defined in Yunus' definition of the poor.

Infographic - Collaboration is based on the idea that sharing knowledge through cooperation helps solve problems more efficiently.

In the enterprise, this principle couldn’t be truer, especially as more and more employees are engaging with one another through asynchronous, socially-geared technology.
