Letter.

My Letter. For The Dust Bowl.

Ashley Gilpin's insight:

Dear Mother.

I feel like I’m not going to make it. Living in Kansas during all this. Mother when I wake up there is no sun, no birds chirping just darkness and dust. Its very hard to breath in all this dust, we have to wear mask on our faces and sometimes the dust is so hard that the mask don’t work and we breath in the dust. I have some very horrible news. Henry. My husband has passed away because the dust filled his lungs and he couldn’t breath I didn’t know what to do. I was s very scared I’m scared for the children mother. What if something happens to them? Or something happens to me? Who is going to look after my babies or me? With Henry gone. I want to come up there to live but I have to car I have no money either with all this dust there is no food, no crops nothing. The only food we have is filled with dust. Me and my oldest daughter Helen tried something to keep the dust out it works a little. Dust sill get in there the cracker but it’s better than before. We have used some old sheets or clothing that we don’t need and made a paste with flour and water. We dip the strips of sheet into the paste and put in on the window and any crack we can find to seal out the dust.  We also made a rope from our place to the children’s school so they can make it there without getting lost in the dust. I hat that I have to send them to school in this but we don’t know how long this dust will be here and I don’t want the children to not have an education. Well I keep talking about us. Let me cut to the point I’m trying to make Mother. I want you to come and get us. You and father have a car. To drive out here we need you we have nothing here anymore and I am terrified for our lives please mother.

With Love,

      Your Daughter

                          Mary.
