She's right - these are all great books that a variety of readers in middle school would enjoy.  Don't skip the classics in your library collection, but replace the old copies with ones with updated covers.

As a parent, I have struggled with required summer reading lists that dump great novels on students with no context, support, or authentic discussion.  As a librarian, I abhor the "beat the book to death" approach to teaching classroom novels.  Donalyn Miller has written an excellent post expressing the pitfalls of required reading from both angles.  Oh, and if you are a librarian and have not read, "The Book Whisperer," do yourself a favor and get a copy.  Then buy one for all of your reading teachers.
