A brief History of Social Media (1969-2012) [INFOGRAPHIC]

A brief History of Social Media (1969-2012) [INFOGRAPHIC] | Graphic and Curation Tools | Scoop.it

But here’s the thing: the history of social media actually goes back a lot further, and its roots can be found in blogging, Google, AOL, ICQ, the beginnings of the world wide web and, perhaps surprisingly, CompuServe.

Via ZAP s.a., Kay Lehmann
Christine Barker's insight:

Phone call------>video Hangouts

Letter writing---->online chat and email

Class lecture------>Khan Academy

Backpacks------->ebooks

Bus ride------->virtual school and work

Wave to the neighbor------>ping

This is so fun to look at...where do you come in on this 'info-graphic reminiscent of 'shoots and ladders game board'?

Now look where we are! What a transformation of experience! It's an exciting time to be alive! And the journey continues.......

One of my first jobs was with an 8088, and I did my first computer rebuild years later with a Win3.11, so you figure it out if you like. I'm doomed to be a lifer techy ;)

A Visual Syllabus: History of Still Photography

A Visual Syllabus: History of Still Photography | Graphic and Curation Tools | Scoop.it
an online class taught by Michelle Pacansky-Brock at Mt. San Jacinto College
Christine Barker's insight:

I'm inspired! There is nothing like a visual to show how a good visual syllabus could look like and work. This is an excellent example. The first photo is a real grabber. I like the way the instructor choose a photo full of emotion. A lot could be said just about that. I also like the background because of the texture and how that makes it feel more approachable to me. The graphic representations, general flow of the page and way it is sectioned off as the topics changed going down the page is clear. I think it would be easy to find what I'm looking whenever I needed to refer back to this page. Adding the reflection VoiceThread is especially innovative. It adds an integration of collaboration beyond this class to future classes which is really cool.

Southam Consulting, LLC

Southam Consulting, LLC | Graphic and Curation Tools | Scoop.it
Christine Barker's insight:

I spoke with the representative for Southam that covers Ohio as the distributor for training and the books published by VitalSmarts. I think VitalSmarts is the marketer or publisher of these books: Crucial Conversations, Crucial Confrontations, Influencer, & Change Anything. These sound like interesting and worthwhile books on leadership from a pragmatic perspective.

The key points I took away, from my conversation who was manning the table at the convention I was attending, was that it is necessary to learn to confront people without sacrificing the relationship. Hard to do but can be a learned and improved skill.

Personal Online Video Editing | WeVideo

Personal Online Video Editing | WeVideo | Graphic and Curation Tools | Scoop.it
WeVideo is the easy, fast and fun way to edit and share compelling videos. Our online video maker gives you creative control to tell your story!
Christine Barker's insight:

Free, fairly easy to learn to drag and drop video clips into place but has some important deficiencies .

I had to create all my video clips and used Snag-it to create some artwork for the beginning and end splash pages because I could only put text on the opening slide.WeVideo lacks the ability to edit the actual video clips. Each video clip had to be recorded separately as there is no way to splice out part of a video clip or adjust volume or anything like that for just part of a video clip. If I lowered the volume of a clip it would have to be for the entire clip, although not the entire "project'. . Not many sound effects available and no stock background music that I liked at all. Initially, I wasn't going to use this site when I noticed the shortcomings, but it was quick to throw together a video as long as I didn't need any advanced editing.

Created a passable video project, but there were issues with the clips being cut short, the video and audio losing sync. I'd like to find other options but for low quality, quick videos, it's not too bad.

Cool resource that I just saw used by Sarah Gilbert @melsgilbert in a Webinar put on by eLearning Guild #elguild on #mLearning design. She was able to let us watch her build a mobile app with her ipad. There are no wires or connections needed. It only works with Apple products, so I'll be looking for an Android alternative since that is my bent. Great presentation! (I'll post link to recording when I get it)

Easelly - Create your own infographic

Easelly - Create your own infographic | Graphic and Curation Tools | Scoop.it
Christine Barker's insight:

This site allows me to create an infographic that I can download and share. It comes with multiple templates but when I went to create one I ended up replacing most elements with my own idea. I'm glad I had the template and the intro 'how to' video to help me get a quick start though. It wasn't a burdensome process. I had an idea of what message I wanted to convey, and was able to build pretty quickly from there. I'm a bit of a perfectionist about everything lining up just right and that is the thing that I sort of wasted too much time on. I like the ability to upload graphics that I find on Google images or other sites. I'll use this next time I need to make a point or create poster!

Christine Barker's insight:

Most everyone I know using ADDIE in the workplace as their go-to. This is an interesting discussion to me because it makes me question ADDIE in light of another idea. Since I'm in the midst of learning about UbD (backwards design) I want to think more about that other alternative. As far as I can tell UbD is really being thought of by traditional educators, rather than workplace trainers and instructional designers. I look forward to seeing these ideas develop over time. At this point, I think ADDIE is nice because it is simple and so widely used, but UbD has many get tools to use during the building of an instructional design and I especially like the focus on the 'Big Idea" which is fuzzier rather than just teaching to the task.

Christine Barker's insight:

To use technology or or not use technology, it's really not a question. But looking at this infographic you can detect there are still areas where more growth potential is still left. Look at the low utilization of MOOC's worldwide with the US even using them less! There are still a lot of school discouraging personal computing devices?? Really? As a student and trainer who uses technology so much, it still surprises me that everyone isn't on the bandwagon.

Create Your Own Real Book On your iPad, in Print or in e-Book Format! | Graphic and Curation Tools | Scoop.it
bookPress, the best create-a-book app on iPad, allows everyone to create their own storybook, cookbook, photobook, children's book, yearbook, or text book in minutes. If you can dream it up, we can help you create it. The books you create can be in quality print or in e-Book format in a matter of minutes. You can even read your new creation in iBook.
Christine Barker's insight:

Although most of the info I read on this website pertained to 'educators', as in school teachers, I can imagine that it could be used for other training too. It could be used for ESL students who could verbally narrate using their newly acquired skills, teaching a process by showing steps of that process through a book format, or anything that could be described in a linear 'storyline'. It is free for educators use.
