The California Historical Society (CHS) is a membership-based non-profit organization that offers free access to its archives of manuscripts, photographs, books and artwork, as well as diverse exhibitions, programs and events. The California Historical Society also publishes the distinguished California History journal.


The California Historical Society is accepting nominations from authors for the California Historical Society Book Award for a book-length manuscript that deepens public understanding of some aspect of the state’s history. 


 A cash prize of $5,000 will be awarded for a manuscript that makes an important contribution to California historical scholarship and adheres to high scholarly standards while being lively and engaging to general readers. In addition to conventional works of historical scholarship, other genres, including biographies, collections of letters or essays, photographic or artistic studies, and creative nonfiction, will be considered.

Call for Proposals- "Improving Education and Reducing Inequality in the United States: Obtaining New Insights from Population-Based Academic Performance Data" The Russell Sage Foundation, in partnership with the William T. Grant Foundation, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for research projects that use data on academic achievement from the Stanford Education Data Archive to deepen our understanding of educational opportunity and success in the United States. 


Accepted proposals will receive up to $20,000 in funding for a faculty project (junior or senior) and up to $7,000 for a graduate student project. Applications may be submitted by teams of researchers. The maximum funding for a faculty project will be $20,000. If a graduate student project has multiple students, the foundation will consider funding up to $14,000. 


Applicants can be doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, or faculty who received their Ph.D. on or after August 31, 2009. 


 DEADLINE: AUGUST 11, 2016 at 2pm EASTERN TIME

Federal Register | Applications for New Awards; Performance Partnership Pilots

The U.S. Departments of Education, Labor, Health and Human Services, and Justice, in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, have announced a second call for proposals for the Performance Partnership Pilots for Disconnected Youth program. This initiative enables pilot sites to use discretionary federal funding to test innovative strategies to achieve significant improvements in educational, employment, and other key outcomes for disconnected youth. 

Deadline for notice of intent is MAY 26, 2016. APPLY BY JUNE 27, 2016.

Digital Projects for the Public grants support projects that significantly contribute to the public’s engagement with the humanities.


Digital platforms—such as websites, mobile applications and tours, interactive touch screens and kiosks, games, and virtual environments—can reach diverse audiences and bring the humanities to life for the American people. The program offers three levels of support for digital projects: grants for Discovery projects (early-stage planning work), Prototyping projects (proof-of-concept development work), and Production projects (end-stage production and distribution work). While projects can take many forms, shapes, and sizes, your request should be for an exclusively digital project or for a digital component of a larger project.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is announcing the availability of funds under this grant program to assist Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in conducting health services and health disparities research for 2016. The purpose of the grant program is to support researchers in implementing health services research activities to meet the needs of diverse CMS beneficiary populations. The goals of the grant program are to: 1) encourage HBCU health services researchers to pursue research issues which impact the Medicare, Medicaid, and Children Health Insurance Programs (CHIP); 2) assist CMS in implementing its mission focusing on health care quality and improvement for its beneficiaries; 3) assist HBCU researchers by supporting extramural research in health care capacity development activities for the African American communities; 4) increase the pool of HBCU researchers capable of implementing the research, demonstration, and evaluation activities of CMS; 5) promote research that will be aimed at developing a better understanding of health care services pertaining to African Americans; and 6) assist in fostering inter-university communication and collaboration regarding African American health disparity issues.

The Harpo Foundation | NEW WORK PROJECT GRANTS

The Chicago-based Harpo Foundation was established in 2006 to support visual artists who are underrecognized in their field. Among other things, the foundation seeks to stimulate creative inquiry aimed at encouraging new modes of thinking about art. 

To that end, the foundation is inviting Letters of Inquiry for its 2016 New Work Project Grants program. Through the annual program, grants of up to $10,000 are awarded to nonprofit organizations in support of new work by under-recognized visual artists who are at least 21 years old. The foundation considers proposals that directly support the production of new work by artists and/or collaborative teams. Productions can happen in the context of an installation, public intervention, residency, or exhibition.

U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE) - Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Program: The AANAPISI Program provides grants to eligible institutions of higher education (IHEs) that have an undergraduate enrollment of at least 10 percent Asian American or Native American Pacific Islander students to allow such institutions to plan, develop, undertake, and carry out activities to improve and expand their capacity to serve Asian Americans and Native American Pacific Islanders and low-income individuals. Examples of authorized activities for the AANAPISI Program are in section 311(c) of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA)
