2014 Equipment Survey Report: More Wineries Plan to Purchase ...

Results from the 2014 Wine Business Monthly Equipment Survey Report indicate that winery confidence continues to strengthen. More wineries are planning on purchasing new equipment, even more than in 2007 when equipment purchases in the wine industry peaked. Sources say there is an ocean of lending credit available, raw material prices are in check and wine sales continue to grow. All in all things are looking very good.

We will discuss in more detail the results of this year’s survey and how wineries are looking to increase production. We will also review how more wineries are finally embracing technology, like cross-flow filtration and steam sterilization. First, however, we will start by looking at predictions from manufacturers and the banking community.

California drought: Why mandatory cuts didn’t hit farms

California drought: Why mandatory cuts didn’t hit farms | Grande Passione | Scoop.it

Critics have charged that Gov. Jerry Brown’s order unfairly exempts agriculture from mandatory water savings, despite the industry’s consumption of 80 percent of the state’s water supply that is available for people, businesses and irrigatio

The Filtering Controversy

Aside from when to pick their grapes, perhaps the single most difficult question faced by some winemakers is whether or not they should filter their wine. Filtration is a murky subject. Opinions differ, with solid reasoning for each. It was only after gaining experience and learning to appreciate the benefits of unfiltered wines that I embraced this methodology. However, I also kept filtration in the back of my mind if things didn’t work out as planned.

Turning Wine Into Water and Creating Fear Out of Nothing...The Case of Arsenic in Wine Based on Faulty Science...

Kevin Hicks has pulled off a kind of miracle—he has turned wine into water. More precisely, he has fueled a class-action lawsuit arguing that wine should be judged by safety standards for water.

Hicks is co-founder of a Denver laboratory that analyzes the chemical compositions of wines. For a fee, retailers, distributors and others in the wine business can access BeverageGrades’ nutritional information on the wines—calories, sugars, carbohydrates and more—as well as any compounds like sulfites or even arsenic. The company gives grades on how “healthy” a wine is, though it fails to define healthy.
