A proposed sale to Bayer, antitrust concerns, reduced stockholder value, trust issues among both farmers and consumers, worries over future use of Roundup in Europe and a failure to be paid for genetically modified organism (GMO) traits by farmers in India and Argentina are major concerns getting serious thought these days at Monsanto’s headquarters in St. Louis. Unfortunately, few of these situations appear favorable to American farmers who are concerned that three proposed mergers and sales among the big six ag chemical companies . . .

Why a Higher Corn Stock-to-Use Ratio in July Is a Concern?

Why a Higher Corn Stock-to-Use Ratio in July Is a Concern? | Grain du Coteau : News ( corn maize ethanol DDG soybean soymeal wheat livestock beef pigs canadian dollar) | Scoop.it

Why a Higher Corn Stock-to-Use Ratio in July Is a Concern? By Adam Jones | Jul 13, 2016 1:25 pm EDT Corn’s stock-to-use ratio On July 12, the USDA1 reported an increase in the global corn stock-to-use ratio to 20.8%—compared to 20.3% last month. The stock-to-use ratio in the agriculture industry tells us how much inventory of a particular crop is available for consumption. A higher supply of crops to its demand results in a higher stock-to-use ratio. Why a Higher Corn Stock-to-Use Ratio in July Is a Concern? Ratio moves higher The above chart shows how the global corn stock-to-use ratio in 2016 has moved compared to the past four-year period. The July 2016 global corn stock-to-use ratio was higher compared to 19.2% in July 2015. This appears to be driven by an increase in corn’s global ending inventory—it has been increasing over the years. Inventory rises in July To put this in perspective, the global corn inventory in July 2016 was 208 million metric tons—10% higher than the global corn inventory in July 2015 of 190 million metric tons. A higher corn supply without changes in consumption usually leads to lower realized prices impacting farm income. These factors have an impact on corn prices. They determine the fate of fertilizer companies (XLB) such as CF Industries (CF), CVR Partners (UAN), Agrium (AGU), and Mosaic (MOS). In the next part, we’ll discuss how corn prices moved over the one-month period.

Two new period charters for panamax bulk carriers have been reported today, while spot market activity for all tonnages except capesizes has helped the Baltic Dry Index advance seven points to 711, according to Baltic Exchange data. Ultrabulk’s Ultra Panache (78,450 dwt, built 2011) was fixed to an unnamed charterer for four to eight months at $6,750 daily. The vessel will deliver in Hong Kong between July 18-21. Norden has fixed Orion Bulkers’ Baltia (75,776 dwt, built 2005) on a four- to seven-month period charter at $6,500 per day, delivering in Shanghai on July 14-16. Reported fixtures for six-month contracts in the Pacific basin have been fixing at around the $6,750 level for the past week or so, which is the highest level seen since early November 2015, according to Baltic fixtures data. Rising spot rates are spurring enquiry in the period market.

If Bayer Deal Falls Through, Could Monsanto See $92 Handle? - Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON), BAYER

If Bayer Deal Falls Through, Could Monsanto See $92 Handle? - Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON), BAYER | Grain du Coteau : News ( corn maize ethanol DDG soybean soymeal wheat livestock beef pigs canadian dollar) | Scoop.it

Shares of Monsanto Company MON 0.11% could drop to about $92 if the potential deal with Bayer AG (ADR) BAYRY 2.39% fails to take off. In May, Germany's Bayer offered to buy Monsanto for $62 billion, or $122 a share. Monsanto rejected the offer terming it as "incomplete and financially inadequate," but said it was open to engage further in negotiations. "We think it would take $135–$140/shr (implies 16.6x–17.2x our new '17 EBITDA) for MON to open its books. While the likelihood of some kind of a deal has increased, we think the possible downside share price risk is ~$92 without a deal (based on ~19x Seed EPS and ~10x Ag Productivity EPS)," analyst P.J. Juvekar wrote in a note. Related Link: CLSA Says Buy The Dip In Monsanto When The Bayer Deal Falls Apart Juvekar noted there are only a few strong agricultural chemical partners left for consolidation. "BASF or Sumitomo Chemical are possibilities for some kind of deal including JVs, in our view," the analyst continued. Rating And Justification However, Juvekar maintains Neutral rating on Monsanto, citing industry uncertainty as agricultural fundamentals are bouncing along the bottom. "Seed pricing did not hold up during 2016 amid tough competition, resulting in lower top-line growth and profitability. The guidance for '17 is softer and we do not see a turnaround in seed pricing until the grain cycle improves," Juvekar highlighted. As such, the analyst slashed 2016 EPS estimate by $0.20 to $4.40 versus consensus estimate of $4.54. Related Link: Monsanto And TargetGene Agree On Gene Editing Technology To Advance Global Agriculture Innovation That said, Juvekar added that Monsanto does have a few positives for 2017 including a $200 million benefit from the lack of Xtend costs ($100 million) and lower cost of goods sold ($100 million). The company expects positive price lift next year, but "we are not fully convinced until we see how this year's crop harvest impacts grain prices." Juvekar raised the target price to $112 from $94 based on increased probability of a potential transaction. At time of writing, shares of Monsanto fell 1.86 percent to $101.49.

Will the soybean bulls remain on the sideline?

Will the soybean bulls remain on the sideline? | Grain du Coteau : News ( corn maize ethanol DDG soybean soymeal wheat livestock beef pigs canadian dollar) | Scoop.it

Soybean prices continue to tumble and are now trading down to areas that I projected would provide more major support. The question now becomes "Can psychological support between $9.75 and $10 per bushel hold during the massive wave of liquidation?" Similar to corn, the weather forecasts are doing little to help support price, as they show more widespread timely rains into August. As well the recent renewed strength in the U.S. dollar and weakness in crude oil has flushed many of the bullish macro players from the trade. Demand for soybeans have been strong, but there's some fairly good arguments that Chinese demand could taper in the weeks ahead as the Chinese auction off heavy doses of their domestic surplus. In very elementary terms, there appears to be less interest in being a weather bull, less interest in being a macro commodity bull, and there's starting to be less interest in being a major soybean demand bull. Hence prices have been moving lower as "bulls" from several key categories move to the sideline. I have to imagine based on the current balance sheet the fundamental "demand" bulls will soon start to find more interest in buying "value." As a spectator, I'm starting to find more interest in being a buyer, but I would like to wait for another leg lower (perhaps the $9.70 to $9.80 area). Keep in mind the U.S. soybean yield has moved higher in each of the past three-years from the September USDA report to the final report in January, so there's some fear inside the trade that production could move higher. As a producer with a very large portion of my estimated new-crop production already priced, I need to simply stay patient and focus on production. I absolutely don't want to get myself oversold in this environment so I remain cautious in pricing any additional cash bushels until I know more about the weather in August. In fact I recently bought back a small portion of my 2017 sales on the break and banked the profits. I still think there's additional room to the upside during the next six months, especially if weather either here at home or in South America become more uncertain. As you can see below in the latest one-month outlook recently released by the NOAA, the top graphic still shows extreme heat. The bottom graphic shows above normal rainfall for many key producing areas. In other words the "heat" is not getting that much bullish play, because there's plenty of rainfall in the forecast. I suspect if the rains don't come as forecasters are anticipating it could be a entirely different story and bean prices could take back off to the upside. Stay patient!

Generally, if you contact someone for help or look up the symptoms, these are things you’re going to need to know. First, look for patterns in the field that might be related to management operations or soil conditions. Nutrient deficiencies are rarely uniform over the field — they will usually show up first in distinct areas of a field. For example some hybrids might have a striped . . .

Fertilizer Update: Ammonia Prices Continue Their Lackluster Streak

Fertilizer Update: Ammonia Prices Continue Their Lackluster Streak | Grain du Coteau : News ( corn maize ethanol DDG soybean soymeal wheat livestock beef pigs canadian dollar) | Scoop.it
Ammonia is the fundamental fertilizer to other nitrogen fertilizers such as UAN (urea ammonium nitrate), as well as phosphate products such as DAP (diammonium phosphate) and MAP (monoammonium phosphate). Ammonia prices act as a precursor to the prices of other key fertilizers. Ammonia price movements for the week ended July 8, 2016, were mixed across the markets. Fertilizer Update: Ammonia Prices Continue Their Lackluster Streak Prices in North America The average ammonia prices in the Cornbelt region saw a 6.3% decline at $415 per short ton ($376 per metric ton) in the last week. This is compared to $443 per short ton ($401 per metric ton) a week ago. However, ammonia prices remained unchanged in the Southern Plains of North America at an average price of $340 per short ton ($308 per metric ton) compared to the previous week. At Port Tampa Bay, the average prices of ammonia also remained unchanged from the previous week at $285 per metric ton. Year-over-year, ammonia prices at these three points remain significantly suppressed by an average of 28%, 32%, and 38%, respectively. The lackluster pricing environment for ammonia continues to weigh negatively on nitrogen producers (MXI) such as Agrium (AGU), Terra Nitrogen (TNH), CVR Partners (UAN), and CF Industries (CF). International prices Average ammonia prices in the Middle East stood at $298 per metric ton FOB (free on board), a 6.9% decline from $320 per metric ton in the previous week. On the other hand, ammonia prices in the Black Sea remained unchanged from the previous week at an average of $250 per metric ton. In Western Europe, ammonia prices stood at an average of $310 per metric ton CFR (cost and freight), which also remained unchanged from the previous week. Year-over-year, prices at these three points in the international market are down by 26%, 38%, and 33%, respectively. Next, let’s see how urea prices moved last week.
