Fibre Optic Connections Boost World Broadband Users to 654.6 Million | GradDSL | Scoop.it

"The latest Point Topic report for Q1-2013 reveals that the total number of global broadband subscribers has grown by 2% (12.5 million)"

LearningGradwell's insight:

Fibre-based broadband services grew by over 10%, cannibalising existing copper services (which remains the dominant technology overall).

19.6 million premises in the UK can now access superfast broadband (via either cable or FTTx), and interestingly there are around 22 million fixed line broadband subscribers.

Sky asks Ofcom to unlock BT cabinets

Sky asks Ofcom to unlock BT cabinets | GradDSL | Scoop.it

"Complaints about the competitive landscape in Britain's broadband model have led Ofcom to announce a review which may include enforcing unbundled fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) access."

LearningGradwell's insight:

Like other providers, we purchase FTTC from Openreach via BT Wholesale. Openreach own and manage the circuit between the exchange and premises (including street DSLAM) and BT Wholesale are responsible for delivering customer traffic into our network using their backhaul from the exchange.

There are some technical reasons why Sky's proposal may not be a simple solution in this article http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2013/07/ofcom-uk-considers-sky-broadband-call-for-unbundled-fttc-product.html

LearningGradwell's insight:

KCom has a monopoly in the Hull area (just like BT did before privatisation and local loop unbundling). There are similar arrangements to access the network (like there is for LLU services), however take up was low (some competitors claim that wholesale prices were too high, others argue that the potential market is too small to justify the cost).

It'll be interesting to see how this alternative provider affects the market in this area.

LearningGradwell's insight:

"It’s a little known fact that, no matter what clever methods you use to speed up transmission capacity (e.g. sending more data by using different wavelengths of light as separate data channels), light still propagates 31% slower than the true speed of light in a silica glass fibre versus a vacuum. The speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 meters per second."
