'Climategate' had only fleeting effect on global warming scepticism - The Guardian

'Climategate' had only fleeting effect on global warming scepticism - The Guardian | Gp Issues: Environment | Scoop.it
Media storms attacking the science of climate change have only a fleeting effect on the public's interest and do not appear to alter opinions, according to new research. Oxford University scientists used the Google Trends tool to track web searches related to global warming over the past decade but found that peaks of interest in major stories, such as the leaking of climate scientists emails in 2009 – dubbed “climategate” – disappeared within a few weeks. “We found that intense media coverage of an event such as 'climategate' was followed by bursts of public interest, but these bursts were short-lived,” said Greg Goldsmith at the University of Oxford. “This suggests no long-term change in the level of climate change scepticism.” “The evidence suggests that events like “climategate” tend to reinforce existing beliefs,” he said. “There's almost no evidence that it converts people's opinions”

WHO reports: One in eight global deaths due to air pollution.

The World Health Organization has released a new estimate of the number of premature deaths linked to air pollution: In 2012, seven million deaths— one in eight of those occurring worldwide — resulted from exposure to air pollution. The vast majority of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries, with much of the burden falling in South East Asia and the Western Pacific.

Here’s the WHO’s breakdown of pollution-related deaths:

Outdoor air pollution-caused deaths – breakdown by disease:40% – ischaemic heart disease;40% – stroke;11% – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD);6% – lung cancer; and3% – acute lower respiratory infections in children.Indoor air pollution-caused deaths – breakdown by disease:34% – stroke;26% – ischaemic heart disease;22% – COPD;12% – acute lower respiratory infections in children; and6% – lung cancer.

TheGpTutor.Com's insight:
It is a fact that counties that host the Olympics end up creating many white elephants in terms of the infrastructure that was built for the event. It is not just the Olympics: the Asian games, Commonwealth games and the World Cup are events which have a significant impact on the environment.
