The Future of Internet Freedom

The Future of Internet Freedom | Global Politics | Scoop.it
We have the technology to defeat censorship. Do we have the will?

OVER the next decade, approximately five billion people will become connected to the Internet. The biggest increases will be in societies that, according to the human rights group Freedom House, are severely censored: places where clicking on an objectionable article can get your entire extended family thrown in prison, or worse.

earthdog58's curator insight, March 11, 2014 7:54 PM

Such policies can never be too stringent to protect children from online predators.

Just look at how many hits on her site "Sweetie" got - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24818769 - "Some 20,000 men contacted her, with 1,000 found to have offered her money."

20,000 is a horrifying number.

This is one area in which all countries should be working together - a common policy to fight the predators and abusers. And, to my liberal way of thinking, the punishments can never be too harsh.
