The dangers of driver’s licence suspensions

The dangers of driver’s licence suspensions | Government cancer treatment | Scoop.it
The trend across Canada is clearly toward making much broader use of driving privileges as a catch-all punishment tool without regard to actual driving skill
Sieg Holle's insight:

This is akin to the arbitrary asset forfeiture laws . Legal stealing whose only purpose is to enrich the state under draconian and dubious punitive thinking. It is unjust, unconstitutional because mobility is a right not a privilege. It must be changed back to road safety only fines as before the intent was perverted or continue to bring the system of "justice " and law into disrepute.

Canadian City CIO offers an IoT reality check

Canadian City CIO offers an IoT reality check | Government cancer treatment | Scoop.it
To say Shari Wallace was trash-talking the Internet of Things would not be entirely accurate, but she certainly demonstrated an interesting use

Richard Platt's curator insight, May 23, 6:48 PM

Shari Wallace, CIO, City of Burnaby commenting about how the IoT can enable better city management.  “What we’d like to get to is really to start thinking of these sensors more out of the optimization of the business process to how we can do things better as a city,” she said. This could include smarter traffic flows, remote proactive information before infrastructure fails, or being able to email citizens or send out tweets about something important happening in their area.  -  Other use-case scenarios for sensor-based technologies today is on the City of Burnaby’s pump stations, which Wallace said are used to remotely monitor things like pressure flow and depth. “What really interests me is the education piece: if your water usage has gone up for 20 percent, for example, this is what it means for our reservoir,” she said. “Some of these things we’re doing were not called the Internet of Things. They were just things good cities did.”  -  Besides reducing costs and increasing revenues, Wallace said the Internet of Things also opens up the potential to share more information with citizens and engage them in a dialogue that wasn’t possible otherwise. On the flip side, she pointed out that privacy, big data challenges and shadow IT all represent risks that will need to be carefully thought through.

GCWS's curator insight, May 25, 4:01 AM

Always interested in this mode of thinking. The development of sensors is exponential however the need to have a common real time remote monitoring platform at an affordable price is the key. Thus my interest in working in Vantage Point Technologies who have the solution.

Richard Platt's curator insight, May 11, 7:21 PM

The idea is that iPhones will someday have two displays; one that a user can see, and another display embedded beneath to transmit hidden data.  This could be in the form of machine readable information, such as barcodes, security details or QR codes that is meaningless to the user.  -  The concept, titled 'Invisible Light Transmission via a Display Assembly,' was discovered in a patent application this week by Apple Insider.  -  The multi-display concept could work using a single display that has pixels that quickly switch between visible and invisible information, according to the patent documents.  -  Apple claims this would allow an app to present visible information that is relevant to the user, while hidden code could be given to machines such as a check-out scanner.

Technological advances are reducing the demand for human labor in routine jobs and increasing demand in non-routine jobs.

State legislatures should restrict mandatory licensing to occupations with serious health and safety considerations. Potential cosmetologists, florists, interior designers, bartenders, and drywall installers should not need the government’s permission to change careers. Reducing these artificial barriers would make it easier for employees to adapt in a changing economy.

Dorothy Retha Cook's curator insight, August 23, 9:01 AM

motivated in school not denied out and just simply not being allowed in!  yes the real obstacles dealt with not those that create more but look indifferentiated as better. I do recall a young man stating he had went to get some fast food while in the place the line went no where and he was thinking what was going on with that. It was funny to find that when it got to his turn the electronic cash register was broken and the cashier could not do the math of the purchases without it right. She had been through high school and all that but was allowed to use calculators instead of doing the math for herself, the new technology way but this young lady using her own abilities to count had a problem adding up dollar items and adding the proper taxes on then subtracting the amount of money she was given for the purchase and then giving back the right amount of  change. There was those that she was giving back more change than was given to pay and of coarse they said nothing but those she gave back less than she should have would yell and ask her how in the he-- she got the job she can count what 1plus1 is and all such. The thing he noticed when it got to be his turn the young lady didn't care anymore and just gave him what ever back but he corrected her told her it was ok and showed her a simple way to add and subtract and that was when she said she had been in school all that time and her calculator was how she learned bykeying the info in and when the cash register broke and she was on her own she just didn't know what to do but she thanked him for caring! enough to not ridicule but show her a way out because she already knew she didn't know how to  count but she didn't know what to do about It but he did. education is a great thing but what are the children learning because there may come a day when technology is not working "ipad" all such then how will the answers be obtained will they be able to maintain a life without technology.
