Breaking: Sen. Jim DeMint Resigns, Will Head the Heritage Foundation

Breaking: Sen. Jim DeMint Resigns, Will Head the Heritage Foundation | Government by We The People | Scoop.it
South Carolina will have two Senate races in 2014. Senior Sen. Lindsey Graham is expected to run for re-election, and now there will be a special election to replace 61-year-old Sen. Jim DeMint.

Today, Sen. DeMint abruptly announcedthat he will leave the Senate in January to helm the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC.

In an interview preceding the succession announcement, Sen. DeMint said he is taking the Heritage job because he sees it as a vehicle to popularize conservative ideas in a way that connects with a broader public. “This is an urgent time,” the senator said, “because we saw in the last election we were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections.” Mr. DeMint, who was a market researcher before he entered politics, said he plans to take the Heritage Foundation’s traditional research plus that of think tanks at the state level and “translate those policy papers into real-life demonstrations of things that work.” He said, “We want to figure out what works at the local and state level” and give those models national attention.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will name DeMint’s successor in the Senate, who will serve until the 2014 special election.

Could the nation’s first female Indian-American governor appoint a Black Republican to the US Senate?

merriemarie's insight:

“This is on Facebook?”

Yes, and it began with the discovery of a photograph on an open Facebook “gallery.” In it, a young girl, perhaps six or seven years old, is not smiling. With her head turned slightly to the right, she looks coyly at the camera. Her hair is done in a highly stylized arrangement with green and yellow ribbons. Along with other makeup, she is wearing lipstick, eyeliner and shadow. She is standing outside, a blue sky and unidentified foothills behind her.

She is holding an inflatable Daffy Duck. And she is completely naked.

The two researchers who discovered the photograph quickly realized it was not the only one of its kind. As they reported to the FBI, “this is part of a growing online collection, their numbers increasing by the hour. And each one is a ‘trophy’ for the child predator who shares the images via Facebook with thousands of others.”

The truth is that most of Facebook’s 600 million users probably consider it to be well-patrolled and safe from such content. The vast majority of us, from parents to major corporations, NGO’s, politicians and even the President of the United States, have no idea that Facebook is home to a massive collection of unreported child pornography and sexual violence.

The Stop Child Porn on Facebook Campaign has developed a bold, new system that will flood Facebook’s corporate offices with your postcards delivered via FedEx. Each card you send carries the message that they must put a stop to this crime immediately. The Stop Child Porn on Facebook Campaign made the tough decision to deliver written messages via FedEx for maximum impact. But now we need your courage and compassion to make this campaign a success.

If Facebook has the human and technological resources to topple governments and shift human history, shouldn’t it be able to prevent sexually explicit and abusive images of children – some only newborns – from being placed on their system? And why is it that law enforcement from State Police to the FBI report that Facebook is “most uncooperative” when it comes to working with them to stop this crime?

FACEBOOK

A multi-billion dollar public corporation, complicit in child pornography,
is called “uncooperative” by law enforcement?

SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG.

We are about to change all that… and YOU can help right now by INSISTING that they stop this criminal activity.

These children need you to send a clear message to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg along with other Facebook executives – as well as US Legislators – that you want these images to be blocked from ever appearing on Facebook. The young victims of child pornography urgently need you to INSIST that Facebook fully cooperates with law enforcement in apprehending these criminals.

With your help, our goal is to flood their offices with your messages – calling for immediate action to stop the exploitation of children on Facebook.

To get started – and to make a real difference NOW – go to “TELL FACEBOOK NOW” at the top of this page or use the large, red “ACT NOW” button above where you can easily FedEx your written messages directly to Facebook and Federal Legislators.

Take the Lead ~ House GOP urges Obama to counter their offer

Take the Lead ~ House GOP urges Obama to counter their offer | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

House Republicans on Wednesday urged President Barack Obama to take the lead in negotiations over the so-called fiscal cliff, as talks appear to have broken down.

Republican leaders were taken aback this week when the White House swiftly rejected a GOP offer based on a proposal outlined by Erskine Bowles, the Democratic co-chair of the president’s 2010 deficit commission.

Boehner issued a statement slamming Obama for “shifting the goal posts” by rejecting the “balanced approach” to deficit reduction he claims to want.

The House leadership aide said a deal to avert the fiscal cliff would be “fairly easy to do” if the president would stop changing his position “every 8 hours or so.”  “He is all over the map,” the aide said.

Republican leaders scoffed last week at an opening proposal from the White House largely based on the president’s most recent budget, which was unanimously rejected by Democrats in both chambers of Congress.

“If you look at the plans that the White House has talked about thus far, they couldn’t pass either house of the Congress,” Boehner said Wednesday.

Obama has insisted that no deal is possible unless Republicans agree to raise revenue through higher tax rates.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the administration was “absolutely” willing to go over the fiscal cliff if Republicans refuse to cave on this issue.

“There’s no prospect in an agreement that doesn’t involve the rates going up on the top 2 percent of the wealthiest,” he said.

However, the aide acknowledged “things could change” as a deadline for a deal approaches, but added: “If [Obama] is waiting for us to cave [on tax rates] he’s going to be waiting for a long, long time.”

Young Guns

Young Guns | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

Two of the Republican Party’s most promising presidential prospects on Tuesday outlined their vision of a renewed GOP that represents 100 percent of Americans, in an apparent effort to distance themselves from some of the blunders of the party’s most recent presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) and House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) both delivered speeches before an audience of influential conservative leaders at the Jack Kemp Foundation’s Leadership Award Dinner. Rubio received this year’s award, while Ryan was last year’s winner.

Republicans, they argued, must do a better job articulating a vision of conservatism and free-market economics aimed at helping people rise out of poverty.

“We have a compassionate vision based on ideas that work, but sometimes we don’t do a good job of laying out that vision,” Ryan said. “We need to do better.”

“Both parties tend to divide Americans into ‘our voters’ and ‘their voters,’” Ryan said, in a not-so-subtle reference to his former running mate’s remarks about “47 percent” of the country being unwilling to vote for him. “Republicans must steer far clear of that trap. We must speak to the aspirations and anxieties of every American.”

Ryan’s speech, titled “A Renewed Commitment to Opportunity For All,” echoed the one he gave at Cleveland State University on Oct. 25 as the GOP vice presidential nominee...

U.S. risks 'another Benghazi' under Mexican rules barring U.S. agents from arming

U.S. risks 'another Benghazi' under Mexican rules barring U.S. agents from arming | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

U.S.agents on assignment in Mexico, where they are helping the local authorities go after violent drug cartels, are not allowed to carry weapons for their own protection, a situation that one lawmaker says could turn into "another Benghazi."

Because the official role of U.S. agents south of the border is limited to intelligence gathering and training their Mexican counterparts, they are barred by Mexico from carrying weapons. The danger they face was underscored last month, when 15 Mexican National Police were arrested in connection with the attempted murder of two CIA agents in August.

"I don't want another Benghazi, absolutely do I feel our agents should be armed," Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the incoming chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, told FoxNews.com.

President Obama gave tacit approval to Mexico's prohibition against U.S. agents carrying weapons in March 2011, following the ambush killing of ICE agent Jaime Zapata and the wounding of his partner, Victor Avilla.

"There are laws in place in Mexico that say our agents should not be armed," Obama said.

And DEA spokesman Michael Rothermund said it's for Mexico to decide if American agents can carry guns in Mexico, not the U.S.

"The Drug Enforcement Administration respects the sovereignty and rules of the Government of Mexico that says United States Law Enforcement is not allowed to carry firearms," Rothermund said.

But U.S. lawmakers are concerned that law enforcement agents are being put in harm's way without the ability to defend themselves despite working under the assumed protection of diplomatic association.

Obama Is Reportedly Considering Anna Wintour for Ambassadorship to UK or France

Obama Is Reportedly Considering Anna Wintour for Ambassadorship to UK or France | Government by We The People | Scoop.it
Obama is said to be considering Anna Wintour for an ambassadorship for France or the U.K. -- though the Vogue editor maintains she doesn't want the job.

Anna Wintour had a busy during election season. As a bundler for the Obama campaign, she raised more than $500,000. She hosted splashy fundraisers around the country, including at the homes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Harvey Weinstein.

According to Bloomberg, a Vogue spokesperson denies Wintour's interest in the position (a line they've maintained for a while), explaining that "she's very happy with her current job."

As Wintour, 63, marks her 25th year as editor in chief of Vogue, many have speculated that she might retire with a plush ambassadorship in France of the U.K It would be fitting, too, after a long stint as the most powerful person in the fashion world.

The job may seem plum -- but, former British ambassadors say, it's also hard work. “People think, oh, here are these pinstriped fools tootling around with champagne in hand. Actually, it’s really important,” Christopher Meyer, British ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2003, told Robin Givhan for a piece she wrote on Wintour's next step last September. “It’s part of the networking that’s required ... It’s damned hard work.”

Executive Order: Obama's Cyber Security Power Grab

Executive Order: Obama's Cyber Security Power Grab | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

As we have oft noted, President Barack Obama is killing the Internet.

Everything the President is doing to the Web is lawless.

The objective of all this Administration is the same as its over-action in all sectors of the private economy - to make it untenable for all private interests, leaving voters stuck with the government as our sole provider.

In other “light touch” regulation news, the Administration is contemplating an illegal Internet tax.

Only within the confines of the government (and the media) does an “order” promote “voluntary” actions on the part of the private sector.

The White House so far has failed to get a bill passed by both houses of Congress to improve the cybersecurity of the nation's critical infrastructure, so it wants to take an alternative approach.

Ummm, no. If you’ve “failed to get a bill passed by both houses of Congress” - you don’t have an alternative approach. But that hasn’t stopped this Administration yet, so why should it now?

The administration has created a draft executive order detailing how, within its authority, it would improve the information assurance of the nation's critical infrastructure, such as the power grid and financial industries.

The draft EO includes eight sections, including the requirement to develop a way for industry to submit threat and vulnerability data to the government.

“Within its authority?” Again, the Administration doesn’t have any. And who determines what constitutes “threat and vulnerability data” - the Feds?

It would be far better to have the experts at Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner and the like handle Cyber Security. Rather than having the incompetent Obama Administration - or any Administration - take the reins.

'Mutual Respect': Obama Greeted Like a Servant by Cambodia's First Lady | Government by We The People | Scoop.it
During a recent visit to Cambodia, President Barack Obama appeared to have been slighted by the country’s first lady without realizing it.

Bun Rany, wife of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, appeared to greet Obama with a dismissive gesture meant to be used in addressing servants. The incident occurred after a “tense” meeting between Sen and Obama over human rights concerns the WH has with Cambodia’s government.

Other commenters claim that Bun Rany was trying to greet President Obama as a peer through her gesture, but the Investor’s Business Daily editorial board claimed the move was “a little dig that was probably lost on him but not to Asians.”

Good Thing We Got Mean Old Egyptian Dictator Hosni Mubarak To Relinquish Power

Because newly-minted Egyptian dictator Muhammad Morsi is totally not becoming the new dictator of Egypt.

With a constitutional assembly on the brink of collapse and protesters battling the police in the streets over the slow pace of change, President Mohamed Morsi issued a decree on Thursday granting himself broad powers above any court as the guardian of Egypt’s revolution, and used his new authority to order the retrial of Hosni Mubarak.

Mr. Morsi, an Islamist and Egypt’s first elected president, portrayed his decree as an attempt to fulfill popular demands for justice and protect the transition to a constitutional democracy. But the unexpected breadth of the powers he seized raised immediate fears that he might become a new strongman.

B-b-b-but…youth and revolution and Facebook and stuff.

This #ArabSpringFail has been brought to you by President Barack Obama, who insisted that the relatively reliable American ally Hosni Mubarak get the hell out of Dodge….

A source with personal knowledge of the security situation in Benghazi told Breitbart News that Senators who listened to closed door testimony about the Benghazi attack were shocked to learn State Department security personnel agents were not immediately armed.

Additionally, agents separated from Ambassador Chris Stevens left to retrieve their M4 weapons in a separate building. Only one returned to protect the Ambassador, while the other two hunkered down in the barracks, the source relayed."

The source went on to describe, “The Senate hearing was very, very concerned about that and Senator Feinstein (D-CA) was very inquisitive as to what in the Hell was going on,” the source said. “She wanted to know did they issue orders for [the security agents] not to shoot. Now they denied that to her in that meeting and they said, ‘No, we never did that. We never did that. We never issued orders that they should do that.’ ”

Guy Benson - Surprise: McConnell Offers Vote on Obama/Geithner Fiscal Cliff Plan, Reid Objects

Guy Benson - Surprise: McConnell Offers Vote on Obama/Geithner Fiscal Cliff Plan, Reid Objects | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

I've been critical of Republican tactics and messaging this week, so let's give credit where it's due: Moments ago, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell took to the floor and offered an immediate vote on President Obama's fiscal cliff plan, which shocked the Beltway late last week. (In case you're keeping score at home, this was the surreal proposal that induced McConnell to laugh out loud as it was outlined by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner). Harry Reid quickly objected and shut the whole thing down, labeling the suggestion a "stunt." Think about that.

If the President’s proposal was made in good faith, Democrats should be eager to vote for it. So I’m surprised the Majority Leader just declined the chance for them to support it with their votes. I guess we’re left to conclude that it couldn’t even pass by a bare majority of votes, and that they’d rather take the country off the cliff than actually work out a good-faith agreement that reflects tough choices on both sides.

...I for one was eager to see what Democrats in the Senate support this totally unrealistic proposal. I think folks should know who actually wants to raise taxes on family farmers and manufacturers, and who thinks we can solve our fiscal problems without doing anything serious to our real long term liabilities. Democrats are so focused on the politics of this debate they seem to forget there’s a cost. They’re feeling so good about the election, they’ve forgotten they’ve got a duty to govern. A lot of people are going to suffer a lot if we go off this cliff. That’s why we assumed Democrats wanted to avoid it. We thought it was the perfect opportunity to do something together. Apparently we were wrong.

DeMint slams Boehner's fiscal cliff counteroffer | Times247 | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

Sen. Jim DeMint criticized House Speaker John Boehner's $2.2 trillion counteroffer to the White House's deficit-reduction proposal, arguing it would kill American jobs and let lawmakers spend more money.

"Speaker Boehner's $800 billion tax hike will destroy American jobs and allow politicians in Washington to spend even more, while not reducing our $16 trillion debt by a single penny,” DeMint said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement from the conservative firebrand comes less than a day after Boehner and House Republican leaders offered a $2.2 trillion deficit-reduction counteroffer to the proposal introduced by President Obama. The 10-year plan includes $800 billion in new tax revenue. Republicans say the plan offers more than a sufficient amount of deficit reduction while not raising taxes.

Conservatives removed from financial committees by GOP House leadership

Conservatives removed from financial committees by GOP House leadership | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

“This morning Congressman Schweikert learned there was a price to be paid for voting based on principle. That price was the removal from the House Financial Services Committee,” Rachel Semmel, Schweikert’s spokesman, told POLITICO. “We are obviously disappointed that Leadership chose to take this course, but Rep. Schweikert remains committed to fighting for the conservative principles that brought him here.”

Roll Call later added that Walter Jones of North Carolina had also been removed from that committee. Additionally, Reps. Justin Amash of Michigan and Tim Huelkamp of Kansas were removed from the House Budget Committee, which Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is currently chair and will continue to chair in the next Congress.

A press release issued by Huelskamp’s spokeswoman Karen Steward says that the freshman Rep. “was given limited explanation for his removal but clearly his consistent, principled, and conservative votes have riled the GOP Establishment.”

“It is little wonder why Congress has a 16 percent approval rating: Americans send principled representatives to change Washington and get punished in return,” Huelskamp said in a statement.

Blog: Can Romney's loss help Republicans? | Government by We The People | Scoop.it

Just ten days after the election, it already looks like rough sledding ahead for whoever sits in the Oval Office. And the fact that it is not Mitt Romney may ultimately help Republicans.

Bret Stephens writes in the Wall Street Journal:

And though I have my anxieties about the president's next term, I also have a hunch the GOP dodged a bullet with Mr. Romney's loss.

... the GOP dodged ownership of the second great recession, which will inevitably hit when the Federal Reserve can no longer float the economy in pools of free money. When that happens, Barack Obama won't have George W. Bush to kick around.

Stephens's point -- that the wreckage of the past four years now belongs to Obama -- resonates in light of current events:

The stock market has nose-dived since the election, and October's $120-billion deficit is the start of a fifth straight $1-trillion-plus annual deficit -- not to mention that the economy and jobs are growing at a snail's pace.

The events taking place in Egypt today are truly remarkable for their speed and degree of violence. In the span of only a few hours thousands of Egyptians stormed into the streets in a fit of rage to protest the newly proclaimed dictatorial powers of the man they only recently elected president. WND.com, quoting a story that first appeared on a French newspaper web site FRANCE24, wrote the blazing headline:

(AFP) Protesters set fire on Friday to the offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, the party of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, a day after he assumed broad new powers not subject to appeal. Pro- and anti-Morsi rallies erupted in cities across Egypt.

Protesters torched Muslim Brotherhood offices on Friday, state media said, as supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi staged rival rallies across Egypt a day after he assumed sweeping powers.
