On campaign trail, Fazl warms up to the US

Contrary to his trademark anti-American rhetoric, influential politico-religious leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Sunday that he did not oppose diplomatic relations with the United States. “We believe in relations based on equality … not a master-and-slave relationship,” he said while addressing a huge crowd of supporters at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore. Maulana Fazl also sought to disassociate his party – the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazlur Rehman faction) – from violent extremism and Islamic militancy. He conceded that his party disfavoured some of the controversial policies of the Unites States, but added that it has never adopted a violent approach.

Via @PakistanWeekly
Max Zamzow's insight:

This is about Maulana Fazlur Rehman's campaign to be elected as a Pakistan leader and turn Pakistan into more of a peaceful islamic state. He is also willing to end violence with the U.S. as long as views against foreign countries are reviewed by the U.S.

Jacob Boe's comment, March 17, 2013 4:58 PM
The thing that irritates me the most about parties debuting their version of things is that they are positive that it's the perfect course of action. They must realize that what's important and justifiable now, might be completely off the mark in 10 years. I think it's ridiculous to even entertain the idea of a balanced budget in 10 years if we don't know the specifics.
