Source: Justin Bieber, dad ignored pilot's demand to put pot away

Source: Justin Bieber, dad ignored pilot's demand to put pot away | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
Source: Justin Bieber and his father allegedly refused a pilot's warning to stop smoking pot during a flight from Canada to New Jersey on Friday.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I'm confused at how the smell was so strong that the crew feared not passing drug tests but when the plane was searched nothing was found. If the border patrol is anything like local sheriffs my guess is that illegal substances/paraphernalia was found but was kept by the border control without issuing a ticket.

South Carolina House votes to cut funds for universities over gay-themed books

South Carolina House votes to cut funds for universities over gay-themed books | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
The South Carolina House approved the cuts to the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina-Upstate as part of their 2014-2015 budget legislation after bids by Democrats to restore the funds failed.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I find this to be offensive and setting back to the gay movement. It's not even just people that are discriminated against, it's also books.

Family of executed Ohio inmate sues state, drug makers, alleging cruel and unusual punishment

Family of executed Ohio inmate sues state, drug makers, alleging cruel and unusual punishment | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
The prolonged execution of an inmate during which he repeatedly gasped and snorted amounted to cruel and unusual punishment which should not be allowed to happen again, the inmate's family said ...
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

This clearly violates his 8th amendment by having cruel punishment. He was suffocating and looked to be in severe pain. His execution took 26 minutes, the longest in 15 years since the death penalty has been back in Ohio.

Obama Orders New Efficiency for Big Trucks

Obama Orders New Efficiency for Big Trucks | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
The regulations are the latest in a series of actions intended to cut back on greenhouse gases without the sort of legislation Mr. Obama failed to push through Congress in his first term.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I totally agree that trucks should be more efficient but the way he is going about it isn't the right way. There are many people who think that these trucks need to be more efficient so using his executive power isn't the right way to do this.

San Diego County gun law violates 2nd Amendment, appeals court rules

San Diego County gun law violates 2nd Amendment, appeals court rules | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal appeals court decided Thursday that a San Diego restriction on carrying concealed guns in public for self defense infringes on citizens' 2nd Amendment rights.

Via MsHaeussinger
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I agree with the courts decision. Citizens should have the right to protect themselves.

If you are in serious need of a gun then you can carry one. But you shouldn't carry a gun for the heck of it.
Isaac Mettler's comment, February 23, 2014 10:48 PM
If you are a responsible citizen and apply for the permit to carry a gun, then you should be able to. They may be able to save their own life or someone else's.
Justin kettner's comment, February 27, 2014 12:41 PM
If you can pass the background checks and can pass a conceal & carry class there should be no questions asked upon why you are carrying a firearm. Public places carry fire extinguishers not expecting a fire but when one happens there a way to try and put the fire out. Same thing comes to a firearm for carrying purposes you never know when something might happen and something bad may never happen in order for you to need a weapon but would you rather be prepared or wish you were?

The Department of Justice's Marijuana Memo Is a Disappointment for Federalism

The Department of Justice's Marijuana Memo Is a Disappointment for Federalism | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
The Department of Justice had a historic opportunity to say that since the people of these states had spoken, as long as what happens in Colorado stays in Colorado, they wouldn't make a federal case out of it. Instead, they issued a mealy-mouth statement about their ability to come in like a ton of bricks if their priorities aren't met.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

The Federal Government should look into changing their laws about Marijuana. More and more states are changing their laws so it's only going to cause tension between the federal and state governments. Yes the federal government is more powerful but it's going to turn into the mean boss nobody likes.

A Missing Argument on Contraceptives

A Missing Argument on Contraceptives | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
Allowing employers to duck the birth control insurance mandate would violate the establishment clause, which enforces the separation of church and state.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

This case is about  companies wanting to take birth control  out of their healthcare for religious reasons. The defense is arguing that this violates the separation of church and state as said in the constitution. I do not think it would be fair for them to take birth control out because people have different beliefs. The case will take place during March and will likely cause an uproar if won by the companies.

Russia Blocks Yogurt Bound for U.S. Athletes | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
The Russian government has kept from the United States Olympic team a shipment of Chobani yogurt, a booming business in upstate New York.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

The Russian Government is blocking shipments of Chobani yogurt that was headed for U.S. Olympic athletes. It feels like the Russian government is just trying to be a thorn in the side of the U.S

Restrictive Voting Laws Upheld In Kansas, Arizona

Restrictive Voting Laws Upheld In Kansas, Arizona | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Federal officials must help Kansas and Arizona enforce laws requiring new voters to document their U.S. citizenship, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, in a decision that could encourage other Republican-led states to consider...
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I think that this a good idea to require voters to provide these documents. It will cut down on voters who either aren't citizens, or are providing false information.

New York high school student suspended for NRA pro-2nd Amendment T-shirt

New York high school student suspended for NRA pro-2nd Amendment T-shirt | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
A High School Student in Upstate New York had his first amendment rights silenced after he was suspended for wearing an NRA T-shirt that touted the second amendment.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I think that a suspension is too much for wearing that shirt. It doesn't suggest or encourage violent actions, it's just a logo for an organization known across the country.

Arizona lawmakers pass controversial anti-gay bill

Arizona lawmakers pass controversial anti-gay bill | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
Arizona's Legislature has passed a controversial bill that would allow business owners, as long as they assert their religious beliefs, to deny service to gays.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I totally agree with businesses not serving certain people but not serving them because they are gay or lesbian is not right. If a person is disruptive, a threat to cause harm, or extremely rude those are reasons to deny somebody service.

Drug policy debate should focus on federalism | United Liberty | Free Market - Individual Liberty - Limited Government

Drug policy debate should focus on federalism | United Liberty | Free Market - Individual Liberty - Limited Government | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
Ted Cruz In a speech last month at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) argued that, rather than ignoring certain laws, President Barack Obama should go to Congress to start “a real conversation” about federal drug
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

if states are changing their laws then I think the federal government should stay out of their business. The Government should enforce laws that all the states have but if some have different views on topics why punish them for that?

In U.S., Trust in State, Local Governments Up | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
Sixty-five percent of Americans trust their state government to handle state problems and 74% trust their local government to handle local problems. Both figures are up from last year, and are at or near the highs for the last decade.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

I think it's a good thing that people trust the local Government better because they are closer and more personal.

Afghanistan Releases Prisoners Over U.S. Objections

Afghanistan Releases Prisoners Over U.S. Objections | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
American military officials have been publicly scathing in their criticism of the releases, which have brought relations between the two allies to a low point.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

The U.S. should stay out of their business unless they know for sure they are going to be a threat. If the men are telling the truth then most shouldn't be a threat.

U.S. Bomber Training Run Imperils Family Reunions in Korea

U.S. Bomber Training Run Imperils Family Reunions in Korea | Gov & Law | Scoop.it
North Korea is worried about military exercises by the United States and South Korea, and may cancel planned meetings of families torn apart by war.
Spencer Tomlinson's insight:

This would be very sad to see  the families not be able to see each other. It's been 60 years since they have been able to see them. If they aren't allowed to this time, they might never see them again. Aging relatives are running out of time to see them and to many this might be the last chance they get.
