3 Unbelievable Food Stamp Statistics in America

3 Unbelievable Food Stamp Statistics in America | Gov and Law Current Events | Scoop.it
You won't believe how much 1 out of 7 Americans get out of food stamps. Hint: they can buy lobster and steak.

Via Jack Hansen
Brian Burroughs's insight:

This article talks about the abuse of welfare in America, something that we have talked about in class a couple days. 1 in 7 citizens is on welfare, they receive over 700 dollars in food money alone, and can buy luxury items like lobster, steak, and Mountain Dew. This is ridiculous and some kind of welfare reform needs to be done.

Jack Hansen's curator insight, February 25, 11:07 PM

1 in 7 Americans are on food stamps.

scoste26's comment, February 28, 11:30 PM
I think that Food Stamps in America are severely misused by many of the people who use it. I was just talking to a cashier today at a local grocery store and she said that people that are on food stamps waste their money buying cigarettes. I believe that Food Stamps should only allow people to buy healthy things that will be good to their overall living. It is unfair to the rest of us Americans, because we are the ones essentially paying for their money. It kind of infuriates me to see what these people can buy (junk food, pop). They should only be allowed to purchase things that will BENEFIT their life!
Mariah Zamzow's comment, March 3, 8:49 PM
If the government is going to pay for people's food they should only be able to buy exactly what the government wants them too. No pop, or chips; Milk and veggies instead. Welfare is very important and is needed but it needs to be reformed so people stop abusing it.

We kinda chuckle about this, after seeing some 'Softers in the Scandanavian countries and the UK riding public transit in full tactical gear...probably NOT a good idea even there...but the same DOES NOT APPLY EVERYWHERE...and when you combine it with the OTHER call local LEO's were working nearby...this could have ended very, VERY badly!

Minnesota poised to become 12th state to embrace gay marriage

Minnesota poised to become 12th state to embrace gay marriage | Gov and Law Current Events | Scoop.it

The Minnesota Senate is expected to give final approval on Monday to a bill that would make the state the 12th in the United States to allow same-sex couples to marry and only the second in the Midwest.

Leaders in the Senate, where Democrats hold a 39-28 majority, have said they believe they have the support to approve a bill legalizing gay marriage. They set a vote for Monday on the measure that members of the state House approved last week.

Democratic Governor Mark Dayton has said he would sign the bill, which would make Minnesota the third state this month to legalize gay marriage after Rhode Island and Delaware. The law would take effect August 1.

Minnesota would join Iowa as the only other Midwestern state to permit gay marriage and the first to do so through legislation. Iowa has permitted same-sex marriage since 2009 under a state Supreme Court order...

This is a very good example of going over board with gun laws. Senator Feinstein is seeking to criminalize nearly all firearms, require nationwide registration and fingerprinting of all gun owners. She wants to get rid of all automatic, semi automatic, and most handguns. She also wants to get rid of the domestic manufacturing of all guns as well. She is one extreme of the gun spectrum, just as those that want no gun laws are as well. We need to find a compromis somewhere in the middle.

A little bias in the media, however? Calling a sitting Senator a traitor?

I think she's going too far with this. I agree that there should be some sort of compromise in the middle.
scoste26's comment, April 27, 4:54 PM
I think that Feinstein is going overboard with the whole gun issue. Yes, background checks should be necessary when buying a firearm, but fingerprints could get a bit tricky. Plus, criminalyzing all firearms takes away civil rights, which would easily cause a hug uproar to occur/

"Michelle didn’t think it was worth having a commuter marriage..."

What many dismiss as a simple slip of the tongue, Michelle Obama may have revealed more than she hoped for when she refered to her self as a "busy single mother" during an interview on Vermont television, as reported by Fox News on April 5, 2013.

Somehow forgetting that she was married to the President of the United States, the First Lady of the U.S. (FLOTUS) stated during an interview with the CBS affiliate in Burlington, VT:

"'Believe me, as a busy, single mother,' she said, before pausing to correct herself.

'Or, I shouldn't say single -- as a busy mother, sometimes you know when you've got the husband who's president, it can feel a little single."

VIDEO - Michelle Obama's "single mother" slip.

The FLOTUS also related that prior to moving to the White House, she considered herself a "busy mom" who sometimes didn't have the time and energy "to shop or cook" as much as she may have liked.

The Obamas Lived Separated For Years...

As cited in the Pasadena Weekly via Wikipedia, upon the election of Barack Obama to the U.S. Senate in 2005, Michelle elected to stay in the south-side of Chicago to raise the couple's two children.

Yet the self-inflicted separation of the couple predates the Senate win.

Barack Obama served as an Illinois State Senator from 1997-2004. During that time frame the couple, again, elected to reside in separate locations.

Will social media save Republicans?

Will social media save Republicans? | Gov and Law Current Events | Scoop.it
A dash of social could make a difference, but success depends on what else the GOP does to reinvent itself.
Brian Burroughs's insight:

Republicans, once in control of the house, senate, and white house are losing ground fast. They are looking to use social media and technology in the next election as part of a resurgence back into power and the majority. Republicans hope that social media will connect them to more voters, and reconnect to the younger generation.

scoste26's comment, April 6, 12:18 PM
What I don't understand about this article is the fact that Democrats AND Republicans are already using social media to get their believes out to the American public. If Democrats notice that Republicans are relying on social media more (which they obviously will notice), then Democrats are just going to do the same thing. I don't think that Republicans are going to get ahead by just using more social media. Everyone uses social media already anyways.

Political Parties are examining themselves, trying to improve and fix things, and provide a new image. This is because they are starting to become obsolete with 40% of american voters claiming to be independents. They have become too similar and nothing is clear cut anymore. There are two many sub parties fighting for specific causes and not the good of the party. It is all falling apart. If you ask me we should just get rid of political parties.

scoste26's comment, March 21, 8:49 PM
I agree with Brian that we should just get rid of political parties. They just cause more trouble and divide the country up even more. Political parties are just a way to separate one idea from another when really we should be trying to bring things together.
Kailee Barnes's comment, March 22, 2:20 PM
I also agree that we should get rid of political parties. All they do is categorize people and make them blind to the ideas of the opposing party. Obama Will Use Nixon-Era Law to Fight Climate Change | Bloomberg.com | Gov and Law Current Events | Scoop.it

President Barack Obama is preparing to tell all federal agencies for the first time that they should consider the impact on global warming before approving major projects, from pipelines to highways.

The result could be significant delays for natural gas- export facilities, ports for coal sales to Asia, and even new forest roads, industry lobbyists warn.

“It’s got us very freaked out,” said Ross Eisenberg, vice president of the National Association of Manufacturers, a Washington-based group that represents 11,000 companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) and Southern Co. (SO) The standards, which constitute guidance for agencies and not new regulations, are set to be issued in the coming weeks, according to lawyers briefed by administration officials.

In taking the step, Obama would be fulfilling a vow to act alone in the face of a Republican-run House of Representatives unwilling to pass measures limiting greenhouse gases. He’d expand the scope of a Nixon-era law that was first intended to force agencies to assess the effect of projects on air, water and soil pollution.

“If Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will,” Obama said last month during his State of the Union address. He pledged executive actions “to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.”

Arizona Lawmakers Advance Bill Making Gold and Silver Legal Tender - BlackListedNews.com

Arizona Lawmakers Advance Bill Making Gold and Silver Legal Tender - BlackListedNews.com | Gov and Law Current Events | Scoop.it

Concerned about the out-of-control Federal Reserve System and the increasingly unstable fiat dollar managed by the privately owned central bank, lawmakers in Arizona are following in Utah’s footsteps to come up with a potential alternative that protects citizens. Legislation to treat gold and silver as legal tender already sailed through the state Senate in late February, and last week, the Arizona House Financial Institutions Committee voted 4 to 2 to advance the bill as well. Activists are now working hard to keep it moving along.

If the legislation (S.B. 1439) passes through the full state House of Representatives and is signed into law by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, gold and silver coins would become legal tender within Arizona. That means, among other important changes, that the precious metals would be treated just like debt-based Federal Reserve notes for taxation and regulation purposes. However, unlike fiat dollars, nobody would be forced to accept gold or silver currency.

I think that this is a good idea, it gives people another way to pay for things. You would not just have to have money to pay for things. Since we base our monetary system off of precious metals anyway, why not limit the middle men and let the people get paid directly in gold and silver. Since gold and silver keep going up in price I would accept them because it would be worth more someday anyways.

Pope Francis' run-in with Benedict XVI over the Prophet Mohammed

Pope Francis' run-in with Benedict XVI over the Prophet Mohammed | Gov and Law Current Events | Scoop.it

Pope Francis came close to losing his position within the Catholic Church after he criticised his predecessor seven years ago.

In 2005, then Pope Benedict, while quoting from an obscure medieval text, declared that the Prophet Mohammed, founder of the Islamic faith, was "evil and inhuman", enraging the Muslim population and causing attacks on churches throughout the world before an apology was issued.
Reacting within days to the statements, speaking through a spokesman to Newsweek Argentina, then Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio declared his "unhappiness" with the statements, made at the University of Regensburg in Germany, and encouraged many of his subordinates with the Church to do the same.
"Pope Benedict's statement don't reflect my own opinions", the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires declared. "These statements will serve to destroy in 20 seconds the careful construction of a relationship with Islam that Pope John Paul II built over the last twenty years".
The Vatican reacted quickly, removing one subordinate, Joaquín Piña the Archbishop of Puerto Iguazú from his post within four days of his making similar statements to the Argentine national media, sending a clear statement to Cardinal Bergoglio that he would be next should he choose to persist.
Reacting to the threats from Rome, Cardinal Bergoglio cancelled his plans to fly to Rome, choosing to boycott the second synod that Pope Benedict had called during his tenure as pontiff.

"The only thing that didn't happen to Bergoglio was being removed from his post", wrote investigative journalist Horacio Verbitsky in his column in left-wing daily newspaper Página/24. "The Vatican was very quick to react,"

Cristina Kirchner, the Argentina president, stated at the time that such diatribes were "dangerous for everyone".

Brian Burroughs's insight:

I think it is good that we have a pope that doesn't back down and fights for what is right. He sounds like what the church neds right now. Also, it is cool that he is a non European pope. It is very interesting that they elected someone so old though, 76. Hopefully he can do a good job

The new pope has a very interesting background story. Apparently, pope Benedict had said in 2005, quoting from a medieval text, that Islam was evil and inhuman. The new pope Francis back then a cardinal had said that his views are not reflected in the pope's views. This was after attacks had been made by muslim's on Christian churches. Francis almost got kicked out of the church. I think this entire incident was silly and could've been avoided. Regardless of what anybody believes, the facts are that provoking the muslims in the past has always ended up in American deaths. Yes Jesus does not agree with Islam but wouldn't he concentrate more on trying to bring them to Christianity and be cautious when he does decide to point his finger at Islam? It is fine to speak out against Islam but it is the death sentence to Americans when we insult muslims. We should be kind and caring to them, showing them the light in that way and never in hate.

It is good to have a strong pope, and not one that is going to be a passive leader. I think he will be able to bring up the Catholic community. I am interested in seeing what he has in store for the future

Brian Burroughs's insight:

The sequester is going to hit Indian reservations very hard; harder than everybody else. Becuase Indian Revervations are on tax exempt land they can't raise very much money locally so they rely heavily on the federal government for aid. Military base schools will also be being hit extra hard by the sequester.
