Company directors in the UK could be held personally liable for failing to properly account for nature and climate-related risks, according to a group of lawyers. A legal opinion published this week found that board directors had duties to consider how their business affected and depended on nature. These included climate-related risks as well as wider risks to biodiversity, soils and water. The analysis said directors of UK firms faced serious personal consequences for breaching these duties, potentially including claims for damages or compensation by their shareholders. Even in cases where it was difficult to work out exactly how much money the company had lost, directors could lose their jobs or have their remuneration or exit packages cut.
Women’s sports reached an inflection point in 2023, propelled by major new broadcast deals, once-in-a-lifetime players and record-breaking audiences that dramatically changed the sports landscape. From Caitlin Clark fever in Iowa to a packed house of 92,000 fans for women’s volleyball in Nebraska, women’s sports have never been more at the forefront. Revenue generated by women’s elite sports could surpass $1 billion this year, a 300% increase from 2021, according to estimates from Deloitte. Bigger media deals and more commercial sponsors are driving record valuations for women’s sports, with several teams’ values expected to exceed $100 million in 2024, according to Deloitte.
Pete Distad, a former top executive at Apple, will serve as chief executive of the new sports-streaming service from ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery. Distad will oversee strategy, distribution and marketing for the new service, ESPN said Friday. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Distad was among the candidates for the job. “This is an incredible opportunity to build and grow a differentiated product that will serve passionate sports fans in the US outside of the traditional pay TV bundle,” Distad said in a statement. In February, the three rival media companies announced they would join forces to make their sports offerings available to consumers in a new streaming service.
The media often highlights hefty CEO compensation packages featuring lucrative stock grants, restricted shares, and stock options. The rationale for offering such equity-type compensation to top executives is to align the interests of managers and shareholders to mitigate agency conflicts between them. Otherwise, managers might deviate from optimal corporate strategies that maximize shareholder value. In addition to the agency conflict between shareholders and managers, firms face a conflict stemming from the divergent attitudes between shareholders and debtholders toward risk.
Constellation Software has a message for Canadian venture-capital backed software companies that are no longer on a trajectory to reach US$1-billion “unicorn” valuations and struggling to raise funds: Come join our galaxy. The acquisition machine, one of Canada’s most valuable companies, usually buys businesses from founders or large corporations. But it is now also “looking for venture capital-backed businesses that did not live up to investors’ or founders’ expectations, companies that are running out of options,” said Farley Noble, senior vice-president of Constellation’s large investment group, in an interview. “We would like to help them.”
Swiss computer accessories maker Logitech said on Monday that finance chief Charles Boynton will leave the company in May, after just over a year in the job. The computer mice, keyboard and webcam maker said Boynton was leaving for a new career opportunity and that his successor would be announced at a later date. The news took the market by surprise and marks another management change at the Swiss-American company, which CEO Hanneke Faber, a former Unilever executive, only joined six months ago.
Shopify granted stock awards to chief executive officer Tobi Lutke valued at close to $200-million, making it one of the largest compensation packages in Canadian history. Shopify disclosed the recent stock awards in filings on SEDI, an electronic system maintained by Canadian securities regulators to track stock ownership by directors and officers of public companies. The Ottawa-based company granted Mr. Lutke 2.6 million options and close to 470,000 restricted shares on Feb. 22, the filings show. Because the compensation came in its 2024 fiscal year, Shopify is not required to disclose an estimate of its value or discuss the reasons for it until 2025.
Vaughan Gething won the Welsh Labour Party leadership contest on Saturday, and is set to become the first Black leader of Wales’ semi-autonomous government. Gething, who is currently Welsh economy minister, narrowly beat Education Minister Jeremy Miles in a race to replace First Minister Mark Drakeford. Drakeford, 69, announced late last year he would step down once a replacement was chosen. Once Gething is in post, three of the U.K.’s four governments will have non-white leaders. U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has Indian heritage, while Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf’s was born to a Pakistani family in Britain.
The European Union on Sunday announced a 7.4 billion-euro ($8 billion) aid package for cash-strapped Egypt as concerns mount that economic pressure and conflicts in neighbouring countries could drive more migrants to European shores. The deal, which drew criticism from rights groups over Egypt’s human rights record, was signed Sunday afternoon in Cairo by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The ceremony was attended by leaders of Belgium, Italy, Austria, Cyprus and Greece. “Your visit today represented a very important milestone in the relations between Egypt and the European Union,” el-Sissi told visiting European leaders. He said the deal has achieved a “paradigm shift in our partnership.”

Organizations are spending more money than ever on cybersecurity—an estimated $188 billion globally in 2023, a figure expected to grow to almost $215 billion in 2024—yet hackers always seem to stay a step ahead. The number of reported data breaches in the U.S. rose to a record 3,205 in 2023, up 78% from 2022 and 72% from the previous high-water mark in 2021, according to the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center. Trends are similar in other parts of the world. What can explain these two seemingly contradictory statistics? If awareness of and spending on cybersecurity is growing, why do data thieves remain undeterred?
Hertz Global Chief Executive Stephen Scherr will step down as the company looks to move forward from a major reversal of its investment in electric vehicles. The car-rental company on Friday named Gil West, a former executive at Delta Air Lines DAL -0.21%decrease; red down pointing triangle and General Motors’ GM -0.04%decrease; red down pointing triangle Cruise unit as its next chief executive, effective April 1. Scherr joined Hertz in February 2022 and oversaw the company after its exit from bankruptcy and subsequent reorganization. He previously served as Goldman Sachs Group’s chief financial officer.
Tellurian said on Monday it was looking at all options, including a potential sale, and that CEO Octavio Simoes had stepped down from his role, amid the liquefied natural gas developer’s efforts to keep its Driftwood export project alive. The company’s shares fell nearly 8 per cent to 88 cents in early trading. They lost 55 per cent of their value in 2023 as the company has not been able to attract commercial support for Driftwood and is yet to give the financial green light for the project. Tellurian earlier this year had hired Lazard to explore a sale of its Haynesville upstream business in East Texas and Louisiana as part of efforts to raise capital for the Driftwood project.
Canada, citing the need to shun Russian energy, on Monday signed an agreement with Germany that it said would accelerate work towards the commercial-scale trade of clean hydrogen fuel. The two nations inked a memorandum of understanding that commits them to backing transactions between Canadian hydrogen producers and Germany’s industrial manufacturing and energy distribution sectors. “Canada is working with European allies to displace imports of Russian oil and gas and fight climate change with clean Canadian hydrogen. Canada can be a world-leading producer and exporter of clean hydrogen,” the federal natural resources ministry said in a statement.
Canada’s biggest banks are on the brink of a round of CEO shakeups, and the chances that the next group of the country’s most influential Bay Street leaders will include a woman are slim to none. More than 13 years ago, then-chief executive of Royal Bank of Canada Gord Nixon predicted that the next round of chief executive officers at the major banks would include the first female CEO. That round came and went without any progress. Today, many of Canada’s largest lenders are setting the stage for a new round of succession in the coming years. RBC’s Dave McKay, Toronto-Dominion Bank’s Bharat Masrani and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce’s Victor Dodig are the longest-serving CEOs among their peers, each hovering around the 10-year mark in their terms – the typical tenure for a Big Six bank leader.
SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a classified contract with a U.S. intelligence agency, five sources familiar with the program said, demonstrating deepening ties between billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s space company and national security agencies. The network is being built by SpaceX’s Starshield business unit under a $1.8 billion contract signed in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an intelligence agency that manages spy satellites, the sources said.
