Wide Open Fear: Australian Horror and Gothic Fiction

Wide Open Fear: Australian Horror and Gothic Fiction | Gothic Literature | Scoop.it

In her introduction to Australis Imaginarium (2010), Tehani Wessely succinctly summarises an idea that has become something of a truism when it comes to discussing horror and dark fantasy stories with Australian settings:

There’s simply something about the vastness of this land and the many weird, wild and dangerous creatures that populate it that lends itself to terrifying tales.

British Library - Press and Policy Centre - BBC Two, BBC Four and the British Library join forces to celebrate all things Gothic this autumn | Gothic Literature | Scoop.it
Gothic is one of the most evocative words in art – it conjures visions of the dark and wild, the supernatural and the eerie. From the Notre Dame de Paris to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, some of the world’s most memorable artistic and architectural creations emerged in the Medieval Gothic era and the Gothic Revival that followed centuries later. This Autumn BBC Two, BBC Four and the British Library are celebrating all things Gothic with a new season of programmes exploring the literat

Scared to death: has horror fiction run out of common fears to trade on? | Gothic Literature | Scoop.it
Whereas Victorian writers could rely on repressed sexuality to generate unease, today's horror and fantasy novels put sex on the front cover. But the best new examples of the genre still bring up the things we don't like to talk about, writes Damien Walter

There's a petition going around requesting that the World Fantasy Award change its prize from a bust of H.P. Lovecraft to one of Octavia Butler , and it is a ridiculous petition for several reasons. The one non-ridiculous reason is that H.P. Lovecraft's racism stains his legacy and upsets many…

Schalken the Painter | Sheridan Le Fanu

Schalken the Painter | Sheridan Le Fanu | Gothic Literature | Scoop.it

Do you know who coined the term “weird fiction”? H. P. Lovecraft popularized the term in his 1927 essay “Supernatural Horror in Literature” but Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu is credited with its inception. Today marks the bicentennial anniversary of Le Fanu’s birth in 1814. He was an author of dark tales who is mostly known for his novel Uncle Silas along with his vampire novella “Carmilla.” Le Fanu’s style of writing had a profound influence on later writers such as M.R. James. Here is one of our favorite weird fiction stories from Le Fanu called “Schalken the Painter.” If you’re interested in Le Fanu’s style of fiction, check out our review of the Le Fanu anthology Reflections in a Glass Darkly from Hippocampus Press or the new tribute anthology from Swan River Press called Dreams of Shadow and Smoke. — The Editors

M/C Journal - M/C Journal

M/C Journal - M/C Journal | Gothic Literature | Scoop.it

M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998 as a place of public intellectualism analysing and critiquing the meeting of media and culture. M/C Journal is a fully blind, peer-reviewed academic journal, but is also open to submissions and responses from anyone on the Internet. We take seriously the need to move ideas outward, so that our cultural debates may have some resonance with wider political and cultural interests. Each issue is organised around a one word theme (see our past issues), and is edited by one or two guest editors with a particular interest in that theme. Each issue has a feature article which engages with the theme in some detail, followed by several shorter articles.
