100 Best Novels « Modern Library

100 Best Novels « Modern Library | Got style? | Scoop.it

Recently I found an article about Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" being ranked 55th on the American Modern Library. Deeply fond of English litterature, I got intrigued and clicked on the link. Surprisingly, and not so surprisingly at All, Ulysses by James Joyce, a novel I had forgotten about comes first.  Then follows a thread of classic novels from classic authors I had always heard about from my various English professors back in high School. Back then I didn't see the interest, or more precisely I wasn't not so attracted for a second by these works as my former comrades were. I was feeling they were more conspicuously interested by these books than the meme "Arts gratias artis". Now I have become more mature and discovered a few controversial writers such as Charles Bukowski or Brett Easton Ellis, I feel a little hunger for these books, especially the ones of kerouac, William S.Burroughs, George Orwell's, Henry Miller, Vladimir Nabokov, William Faulkner or F.Scott Fitzgerald. It will surely take me quite some time in the next coming years. But I have regained my former interests in reading and I'm quite happy about it. The 100 Best novels list was established by the Board's list of the Modern Library, renowned publisher of classics, chronicles, essential writings, and translations. Includes the Bantam Classics line of titles for high school and college students, and the authorized Royal Shakespeare Company editions.

Post Cool ...Carving up the new frontier of style | Adbusters Culturejammer Headquarters

Post Cool ...Carving up the new frontier of style | Adbusters Culturejammer Headquarters | Got style? | Scoop.it

Cool’s original power had derived from its formative role in forging a modern personality type, a style of engagement – indirect, ironic, flexible, infused with humor, sometimes flippant – that was adopted with success by a growing percentage of the population.

But the relentless mass marketing of cool has tainted this style of behavior and made it seem inauthentic or contrived to a growing number of individuals. It is almost inconceivable that anything could happen, at this late stage, that would restore to cool the freshness and vitality it possessed in the fifties and sixties.

Of course, the old-school cool ethos will not disappear completely. Even when some color or fabric is passé, it still finds its way into our wardrobe. But cool now lacks conviction and energy. Above all, its economic force is diminishing. And this, more than anything, will accelerate its decline. One busy cash register is worth more than a thousand pundits. The arbiters of taste – at record labels, in films and TV, in consumer marketing, in media – will respond to these economic shifts rather than lead them. But follow they must, or disappear from the scene. Their successors will not make the same mistakes. Over time, this will transform even the last institutional bastions of cool into promoters of the postcool worldview.

Marc Lenot "Amateur d'Art par Lunettes Rouges" | La perte de l’innocence (Sally Mann)

Marc Lenot "Amateur d'Art par Lunettes Rouges" | La perte de l’innocence (Sally Mann) | Got style? | Scoop.it

Dw by Kanye West 2012 Spring/Summer Collection

Dw by Kanye West 2012 Spring/Summer Collection | Got style? | Scoop.it

Following plenty of hype, anticipation and overall curiosity, Kanye West made his official debut as a designer during Paris Fashion Week. Presenting his Dw by Kanye West line, the Grammy Award-winning musician seemed excited yet surely nervous about his first foray into women’s fashion. Vulnerable and open to criticism, the talented Mr. West headed a project that, from all accounts, featured plenty of insight and design cues from a collective of notable fashion heads. Overall, Dw by Kanye West received mixed reviews, although Kanye’s efforts and eagerness towards the entire process were applauded. Style.com‘s Tim Blanks offers insight into the line below: Maybe that’s why what Kanye actually offered on the catwalk was such a surprise. He was keen to communicate that, as far as he was concerned, there was a couture level of workmanship in items that had taken three days to complete in the atelier he’d established in London. What we actually saw was something that looked like a baby Balmain vision of womenswear. The context was impeccable—soundtrack and staging exactly what you’d expect from someone whose 360-degree vision has been responsible for some of the best albums and concerts of the past decade. The clothes? Heavy might be the operative word: zippers in excelsis; suede and leather high-performance clothing; beading, crystals, and appliqué weighting jackets and tops. And more fur than you’d want on a night when the mercury hit the roof in Paris. It’s kind of a cheap shot to go the trying-too-hard route with someone who is so undoubtedly passionate about what he is doing, but at the same time, it’s frustrating that someone who seems to almost effortlessly realize his vaulting musical ambitions comes up short elsewhere, at least on the first attempt. Of course, what Kanye West is trying to achieve is unprecedented. There isn’t a fashion designer alive who could match his music. But tonight’s show suggests that conquering his new medium is a work in progress.

Shot in Varna, the campaign aims to promote french style restaurant Red Canapé. Beautifuly shot by photograph Lyubomir Sergeev and perfectly managed by Varna based advertising agency Affectmedia, the shooting sets feature four of the most emblematic places of the bulgarian black sea coast city. The common thread line: a Red Canape. Luckily I got to be part of the adventure (the one sitting on the tarmac in a suit) . A moment that marked the apex of my stay in Bulgaria before heading to finish my studies in Barcelona from September till January.

WRANGLER - Mark Your Territory

Wrangler presents its newest film, Mark Your Territory, the latest creative in Wrangler's We Are Animals campaign.

This digital short depicts the huge variety of ways that human beings mark their territory. The ways we leave our stamp may be more sophisticated, but we remain animals at heart.
We Are Animals encourages us to escape the routine, and live life at the extreme, with heart pumping and adrenaline flowing. Like animals, we are compelled to mark our space and our belongings, to leave our stamp. Tagging, tattooing, branding: these are primal, animal impulses.
We Are Animals: Mark Your Territory.

Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization

Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization | Got style? | Scoop.it

We've reached a point in our civilization where counterculture has mutated into a self-obsessed aesthetic vacuum. So while hipsterdom is the end product of all prior countercultures, it’s been stripped of its subversion and originality.

What they may or may not know is that "cool-hunters" will also be skulking the same sites, taking note of how they dress and what they consume. These marketers and party-promoters get paid to co-opt youth culture and then re-sell it back at a profit. In the end, hipsters are sold what they think they invent and are spoon-fed their pre-packaged cultural livelihood.

An amalgamation of its own history, the youth of the West are left with consuming cool rather that creating it. The cultural zeitgeists of the past have always been sparked by furious indignation and are reactionary movements. But the hipster's self-involved and isolated maintenance does nothing to feed cultural evolution. Western civilization's well has run dry. The only way to avoid hitting the colossus of societal failure that looms over the horizon is for the kids to abandon this vain existence and start over.

5BORO Fall Collection '11 CLIP

New York designer and manufacturer of skateboards and clothing built for skateboarders who live for the streets released a video a month ago for 5BORO Fall collection 2011. Shot in black and white, the video feels like an anachronism portraying skaters rolling through the emblematic neighborhoods and streets of Big Apple. Add to this the magic jazzy trumpet of Miles Davis for the soundtrack and this video feels like a time machine transporting you back in New York during the 1920s... except there are skaters with dope style, sneakers and tricks.

Porsche Design P’6520 Compass Watch

Porsche Design P’6520 Compass Watch | Got style? | Scoop.it
Porsche Design welcomes the P’6520 compass watch. Initially spotted back in March, further information now comes to light about this new release, produced in a limited run of only 911 pieces. Porsche provides a bit of insight regarding the timepiece’s two-part development: “The P’6520 Compass Watch comes in two parts: the upper part is a precision three-hand watch, whose luminescent hands are driven by the automatic SW300 Sellita calibre. The date appears at 3 o’clock on the dial. The lower part of the watch opens to reveal a liquid compass that can be easily removed. The watch is available with a compass for both the northern as well as the southern hemisphere. In order to find one’s bearings with this instrument, a scratch-resistant mirror has been installed on the rear of the watch part and on top of the compass. When opened, the two mirrors click into place at 45 degree.”
