Sources and Tags: Dennis O'Connor's Curating Secrets | Communication design | Scoop.it

There's no question that Dennis O'Connor has found much success on Scoop.it. It wasn't all coincidental, though. Dennis shared with us two of his best curation secrets and tricks:

1. Develop multiple sources for your topics
It's important to carefully think through the keywords that you set for your topic so that Scoop.it can crawl the web and provide you with interesting and relevant content and inspiration. In addition to taking full advantage of this, Dennis also uses other tools like Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Prismatic to find content to share on Scoop.it. Once he finds the content he wants to share with his audience, he uses Scoop.it as his social media hub to add value to that content and share it everywhere.

2. Tag your posts
Dennis takes a lot of time to tag each of his posts. This allows him, he explained, to assemble publications based upon his tagged topics. When he's using his information on Scoop.it for his E-learning classes, it's easy for him to filter his Scoop.it pages based upon different subjects and easily compile a list of posts and articles on appropriate topics to provide to his students. Something interesting that Dennis does with his tagged articles is to pull them by subject and create "special editions" of his topics on his blog for special classes and events that he is teaching.

We really dig the visuals provided by Joe Todd Stanton. This is a common sense piece on regular business interactions. If you're B2B, it makes sense to brush up on these once in a while and make sure you're not taking shortcuts or skippng any of these keys to success.  One thing we would like to see added to this list is an additional, automated customer survey and referral portion - reducing that awkward groveling for a referral, and also allowing honest customer feedback, which dictates whether to offer an apology and promise to do better next time, or to simply ask for a brief positive statement right then and there, along with a referral, if the survey results are terrific (which they should be if you're doing the job right!).

Ultimate Guide to Monitoring Your Online Reputation [Infographic] | Communication design | Scoop.it

Monitoring online reputation for businesses, brand names, and even persons is a necessary evil in today’s world of consumer generated content via blogs, social media and review sites. It’s not just the search results that one has to worry about anymore but blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Yelp and the list goes on. One negative review can bring a small business to its knees.

Color is very important to brand recognition. Scientists and researchers believe certain colors make us feel a certain way about something like this infographic by The Logo Company suggests.

Red : Excitement, Youthful and Bold.
Green : Peaceful, Growth and Health. ( even eco-friendly)
Blue : Trust, Dependable and Strength.
Orange : Friendly, cheerful and confidence.
Black and White : Balanced, Netural and calm.

Infographic: Watch Tweets Appear Worldwide in Real-Time | Communication design | Scoop.it

By Franck Ernewein, Tweetping is a map that shows where everyone in the whole world is tweeting from in real time.

Much like Poptip’s treatment of Twitter, you’re not really meant to follow it all. Country-by-country tickers do track the total tweets, words, and characters sent since you signed on, but hashtags and @-mentions flash for milliseconds, constantly replaced by a stream of data that can’t be paused for a moment, lest the system fall perpetually behind. Meanwhile, the geolocations of each tweet make their way to a world map as a glowing dot. As the tweets pile up, so do the dots, meaning the world transforms from prehistoric shadows to blindingly bright connectivity in a matter of minutes.

Great link...and I agree there is a lot of confusion these days. As far as future job skills, there was a recent study that showed we are very poor at predicting specific occupations. It is far better to focus on core competencies versus preparing students for specific jobs given we're not all sure what they will even be in the future..my view.
Gust MEES's comment, February 1, 2013 5:31 AM
@Linda: TRUE, there will be NEW jobs which nobody today could predict! Therefore it is very important to teach the students, learners, the BEST possible skills of ICT which WE know actually and to teach them "Learning 2 Learn", so that they will be BEST prepared for Self-Learning (autodidact) to master the "Life Long Learning" who is aa MUST for 21st Century!
Ness Crouch's curator insight, February 3, 2013 12:30 AM

I a big believer in teaching skills. Give learners skills to apply elsewhere and they can do so much more.
