While you may have learned the symbol for pound as a child, that sign (#) today is called a hashtag.  And in the world of Social Media, it turns any word or phrase into a searchable link.  It is used so that users on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google Plus can track and join discussions on topics based on hashtagged key words or phrases.

JOINTED CUBE Steel Outdoor Installation

JOINTED CUBE Steel Outdoor Installation | Communication design | Scoop.it

Filip Janssens expanded on his 2014 collection of small steel furniture called JOINTED, which was presented at the Design Biennale Interieur Kortrijk, and went big, really big. The JOINTED CUBE is based on the same idea but is a steel framed outdoor installation.

It’s partly closed with pine walls, floor, and ceiling, but with moments of openness highlighted by steel cubes. The cubes become places to sit or tables to highlight objects. Modular seats are both inside and outside the cube.

Innovative Sustainability: Matchbox Elementary School Sports Hall

Innovative Sustainability: Matchbox Elementary School Sports Hall | Communication design | Scoop.it

The Obrenovac First Elementary School is the first established school in Belgrade, almost 200 years old. During the two centuries pupils of this school had no adequate indoor space for physical education and sports activities.

From the very beginning the idea was to design low budget, energy efficient and sustainable building with no unnecessary details.

As Obrenovac Municipality is close to the river Sava banks, it is under the influence of the underground water. This was the crucial technical problem which had to be resolved from the first preliminary design phase. Through design process, the solution for these challenges has been successfully found by designing the waterproof concrete hull, 5 meters deep in the ground, just few centimeters over the highest underground water level. This concept provided some kind of waterproof box, as boat sink, for all premises inside.

Buckle up and ride a rocket through our interactive view of the Solar System to explore our cosmic neighbourhood

Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 9, 10:37 PM

BBC has released another great interactive infographic which allows you to travel through space and learn just how big it is. You begin your trip with blasting off earth and at 6.1 km you will pass the start of the high cloud layer....continue through the stratosphere to the mesosphere to the thermosphere and beyond. After a very long journey you will reach the edges of our solar system, where you will be told "It would take you about 23 million years of continuous scrolling on this scale to get to the farthest regions of the observable universe..."

The distance of our solar system is vast, and this interactive may help our learners begin to understand just how vast it is.

How Memory, Focus and Good Teaching Can Work Together to Help Kids Learn

How Memory, Focus and Good Teaching Can Work Together to Help Kids Learn | Communication design | Scoop.it
Spend more time teaching learning skills. Klemm recommends memory tricks like mnemonic devices, and visualizing ideas as complex images, to help students expand their working memory. “If they knew these things, they wouldn’t have to work so hard and school might even become fun,” Klemm said. “Once students start reflecting and become more self-aware, they have the opportunity to become better students.”

“Working memory gets overloaded,” Kleem said. “Most people can only hold four independent ideas in working memory.” But if images are used to represent a constellation of ideas, people can remember much more. Words are hard to remember, but images stick with people. “It’s like a zip file,” Klemm said. “This is a way to get your working memory to carry more.”
