Since the FAA has only just begun flying drones at test sites, it'll take quite some time before it can draw up rules and regulations for commercial use of UAVs.

New Ubleam App Challenges Ubiquitous QR Codes

New Ubleam App Challenges Ubiquitous QR Codes | Communication design | Scoop.it

QR codes are everywhere, and lead users' mobile phones to a website or email address.  They are not particularly attractive, and something about them is beginning to feel very "first generation" limited.  Now a new company called UBleam has taken the idea of printed digital codes a giant step further, and if it catches on, could make QR codes obsolete. The code appears in a ring of attractive bubbles that fit neatly around any round logo or artwork, and offers a company a wide array of customization options in how codes work for an individual user.

Steve Jobs Isn't The Only Kind Of Artist Leader

"He may have been a genius and a charmer, but he was far from the person the leadership books tell you to be. And even the authors of those books are chiming into the global choir singing his praise. How did that happen?..."

We need creative leaders in business. The lifespan of large companies will continue to shrink unless they learn to reinvent themselves.

John Maeda, the president of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and author of the book  Redesigning Leadership, predicts that artists will emerge as the new business leaders

But imitating Steve Jobs isn’t the answer. He was an outlier...

To develop more artist leaders for the 21st century economy, we need to recognize the contribution of experimental innovation and encourage it — and failure — in our schools and workplaces.

How We Master Connectivity The Core Essence of Social Networking

How We Master Connectivity The Core Essence of Social Networking | Communication design | Scoop.it

"Without understanding connectivity, the basis of human connections, network theory, contextual intelligence, any business leader unable to grasp those things will be lost." [Warren Bennis]

The 12 habits of highly connective people has been the single most read and shared post I have written in the last couple of months. Literally.

Why it worked

Part of the reason is the structure of the post.

It starts with a great story told vividly by a master storyteller and maker who has earned tremendous respect and attention in the business and tech communities. Two communities I am becoming very involved with and hope to bring closer to each other...

Innovative Interior Features Dynamic Spaces, Hammock Seating and Modular Furniture

Innovative Interior Features Dynamic Spaces, Hammock Seating and Modular Furniture | Communication design | Scoop.it

When the studio Ruetemple created a room in a Russian home meant for a young brother and sister, they didn’t take a conventional approach to the design. The two-storey space, called Interior for Students, needed to be a place for the kids to study, sleep, and hang out with their friends.

So, architects Alexander Kudimov and Daria Butahina filled it with some fun details like a mezzanine hammock and a moveable cube. They built a fixed space for school work and dynamic areas for play using none of your typical furniture.
The lower level of the 108 square-foot room features a modular seating and sleeping cube on wheels. It can be arranged as a trio of sofas, as a long continuous line, or even closed up and made into a room within a room. Fixed office furniture occupies the other side of the space, and it includes desks, cupboards, shelves, and a staircase. All items are made from the same materials so that they appear as one cohesive piece of furniture.

A Harvard woman figured out how to 3D print makeup from any home computer, and the demo is mindblowing

A Harvard woman figured out how to 3D print makeup from any home computer, and the demo is mindblowing | Communication design | Scoop.it

"We’re going to live in a world where you can take a picture of your friend’s lipstick and print it out," says the founder.

Choi created her own mini home 3D printer, Mink, that will retail for $300 and allow anyone to print makeup by ripping the color code off color photos on the internet. It hooks up to a computer, just like a normal printer.

Mink isn't a printer as others because it's done for make up. An awesome gadget for girls but i'ts an example of entrepreneurism and innovation.

Thoughts on Defining Innovation in Education

Thoughts on Defining Innovation in Education | Communication design | Scoop.it

"I’ve been doing some thinking about how to best define innovation in education.  I’ve been reading a lot of mission statements lately for schools and districts and keep finding the word “innovative” used, yet little sign of practices in the objectives, tactics and goals to back this up. The tactics  and action plan seem to be oriented towards producing test scores and the practices seem 20th century at best."

Nancy White looks at definitions that businesses use to define innovative and then looks at how education defines innovation. Here is one of her statements:

"In education, innovation often results when ideas are applied to satisfy the needs and expectations of the students."

Take the time to click through to the post and read her other statements and then ask yourself 'Am I innovative? Is my classroom innovative? My school?" or "What changes need to be made to make my teaching, my classroom or my school innovative?"

Replace Innovation with Design Thinking

"I am a huge believer in “innovation,” but the term has become over-used, and its meaning is often lost. And innovation is regularly confused with “invention,” alone. Innovation seems to have lost its alignment with supporting anchors such as values, pervasiveness, creativity, teamwork, customer-centricity, user-experience, collaboration, inquisitiveness and curiosity."

Design thinking can apply to every goal set by management and individuals, so it is truly pervasive.

Design thinking is an innovation approach that aggregates ideas in an iterative process that promotes unique and unusual ideas, and rewards failure, such that the resulting design has limited technological, or leadership bias in its outcome. The emphasis on collaboration also drives broad ownership for the success of solutions.

Design thinking, by its nature and foundation can help produce solutions to much larger and difficult problems, often referred to as “wicked problems”. The enemy of design thinking is fear and unwillingnessto let go.
