How a print mag’s front page retains its power in a digital age

How a print mag’s front page retains its power in a digital age | Communication design | Scoop.it

While it's clear print is here to stay a little longer, the debate has recently shifted towards how we ensure it does by innovating approaches to magazine-making. Gym Class Magazine has continually touted the magazines that push the format and in its latest issue, which came out last week, one article discusses how publications are using the power of magazine covers to stand out in the digital age. Written by Colin Crummy (film editor at i-D and contributing editor at Esquire), the journalist draws upon on recent examples including Kim Kardashian’s Break the Internet cover for_ Paper to illustrate the impact covers can still have. The magazine has kindly let us reprint an extract from the article below.

Favorite Digital Maps of 2013

Favorite Digital Maps of 2013 | Communication design | Scoop.it

'The digital maps we loved in 2013 didn't simply illustrate novel or useful information. They did it in ways we'd never seen before, manipulating time, dimensions, perspective, even the atmosphere. These maps weren't just interesting in content; they were innovative in design. That's our new bar for 2014.

So this December, instead of sharing our top 10 maps of the year, we're looking at 10 ways we've learned to think about maps in entirely new ways. This may well have been the year when maps ceased to impress us for what they convey and began to stun us instead for how they did it.'

Top 10 Mistakes in Web Design

Top 10 Mistakes in Web Design | Communication design | Scoop.it

The 10 most egregious UX offenses against users. Web design disasters and HTML horrors are legion, though many usability atrocities are less common than they used to be.

Marty Note
If you took a day and fixed any of these Top 10 Web Design Mistakes That Apply you would make 50% more this holiday season. These are "cost of poker" fixes that can easily remain for years and years. Every year one of these mistakes exists your website is 10% less effective.

When you make 2 or more of these mistakes you pay with an order of magnitude more pain for each added mistake so 2 mistakes doesn't cost you 20%. No 2 mistakes cost you 200% of what your website could be doing for you.

Fix all 10 of these basic problems and your site is on its way to its "mission critical" place in your company.
