How Fractals Bring Imaginary Cities to Life

How Fractals Bring Imaginary Cities to Life | Communication design | Scoop.it
Artist Emily Garfield maps places that don't exist. "I think that's related to the way cities grow in real life."

Emily Garfield like to say that she grows cities. With pen, ink, and watercolor, the Boston-based artist creates maps of imaginary places that tap into the essence of urban form.

Garfield has long been interested by the presentation of architecture in visual art. The inviting, surrealist arcades and sidewalks of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico inspired Garfield to begin producing her own street-level dreamscapes as an art student at Brown University.

But it was when she created her first aerial view of a fantasy city—an abstract web of streets, bridges, and blocks—that she got a particularly positive response from other people. Even without any text, Garfield's drawings were strongly recognizable as maps...

Interactive Light Display Transforms Moroccan Church into a Multicolored, Reactive Art Experience

Interactive Light Display Transforms Moroccan Church into a Multicolored, Reactive Art Experience | Communication design | Scoop.it

Sacré Coeur in Casablanca, Morocco was designed by French architect Paul Tournon in 1930. The cathedral's underuse (religious functions ceased in 1956) combined with its vaulting Neo-Gothic breadth, makes it the perfect venue for cultural engagement.

Cue the lights: From April 3 - 6, French transmedia installation designer Miguel Chevalier bedecked the halls with Magic Carpets 2014, a projected animation that turned the institution's massive floor into a multicolored, reactive art experience.

Color as 3-dimensional architectural elements: An art installation by Emmanuelle Moreaux

Color as 3-dimensional architectural elements: An art installation by Emmanuelle Moreaux | Communication design | Scoop.it

Inspired by the Japanese traditional sliding screens, French architect Emmanuelle Moreaux has created the concept of Shikiri, which literally means ‘dividing space with colours’.

Created using traditional Japanese paper, Moreaux’s installation '100 Colours' for Shinjuku Creators Festa 2013 modulates a designed space with candy colours. Her intelligent utilization of colours as three dimensional elements to create actual spaces rather than just finishing touches on surfaces is commendable.

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking | Communication design | Scoop.it
RSA Animate recently released a video called 'The Power of Outrospection'. The video intrigued me and this post has helped me pull together some of my thoughts about the links between empathy and creativity.
The post explores empathy in a variety of fields, including design, human services, and the creative fields, and the video is also embedded in the post. Take the opportunity to read the post, watch the video, and ponder how empathy allows us to be creative as we look for new solutions for whatever issues we face.

[Best of 2014] The Year in Viral Art

[Best of 2014] The Year in Viral Art | Communication design | Scoop.it
This is the art that was all-but-inescapable in 2014.

Art Basel Miami offered $3 billion worth of work, Peter Lik sold the most expensive photograph ever ($6.5 million), and a second Mona Lisa was discovered, making 2014 a monumental year for art. Whether it was Kara Walker's sugar sculpture, Miley Cyrus' solo show, or even Shia LaBeouf's #IAMSORRY performance, this year was filled with works we couldn't stop seeing, sharing, or talking about.

Picasso At The Beach and The NEW Art of Web Design

Picasso At The Beach and The NEW Art of Web Design | Communication design | Scoop.it

PicassoHead App
Sharing this cool "draw a "Picasso Head" app (my PicassoHead http://www.picassohead.com/?id=5290a28#.VBCfth1bqjo.twitter ) to illustrate a few of our favorite web design concepts such as:

* DO LESS and let them DO MORE (them = customers, visitors, advocates_.
* GALLERIES ROCK - especially when your gallery is chock a block full of User Generated Content (UGC).
* Engagement Rocks - do you have a tool that is fun to use AND promotes positive site heuristics such as time on site, pages viewed, lower bounce?
* Every product, idea or website starts about the creators and must become about those who visit and love it.
* People love what THEY create and contribute more than what you do.
* This means all web design is or will be about collaboration.

We love the simplicity of this little app, but the even COOLER riff came from our confirming email. This is the email that shares the link where my Picasso At The Beach drawing lives (linked from this post http://www.picassohead.com/?id=5290a28#.VBCSuy4Lksk.twitter ) and where this little pitch lived:

"This summer check out Picasso Looks at Degas at the Clark in Williamstown, MA. You won’t want to miss this groundbreaking, Clark-exclusive exhibition that is the first to look at Pablo Picasso’s deep fascination with Edgar Degas.

http://www.clarkart.edu/exhibitions/picasso-degas/ "

Wow, cool idea. Create a little art based app and sell related links in the confirmation email. That's brilliant marketing, subtle marketing and the art of web design. Kudos to Picassohead creators RFI Studios, http://www.rfistudios.com.

The Inspiring Artwork of Paper Engineer Matt Shlian

The Inspiring Artwork of Paper Engineer Matt Shlian | Communication design | Scoop.it

Matt Shlian started school as a ceramicist… but it was only when he realized that he was “interested in everything” that his work really took off.

He creates sculptural artworks from flat pieces of paper that show the incredible diversity of the medium while creating beautifully inspiring forms. They are also doing something rather surprising: inspiring scientists.

Along with a team at the University of Michigan he won the NSF (National Science Foundation) award on a nano-origami project that combines both art and engineering...
