"From the moment we are born, society has already defined us. We are pushed into thinking small throughout our entire lives—by others, our environment, and the existing systems within our society, but most powerfully of all we unconsciously limit ourselves. Ashoka works from a very different belief."

INVEST IN INNOVATION: Fight Labor Exploitation In Pakistan — Hazer Gul | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

Born in northern Pakistan, Ashoka Fellow Hazer Gul began working as a firewood collector at the age of 8 and then as a weaver at the age of 16. Although he worked over 9 hours each day, Hazer could never earn enough cash to feed his family and was caught in a cycle of bonded labor. Eventually freeing himself, Hazer has an intimate understanding of the problems that plague people working in home-based manufacturing throughout Pakistan, and has developed a plan to empower laborers involved in that sector.

The Stages of Economic Development from an Opportunity Perspective | OSEAFAS

The Stages of Economic Development from an Opportunity Perspective | OSEAFAS | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

All economies evolve and develop over time and there have been many theories developed over the years that have attempted to give both descriptive and predictive explanations. One of the more widely accepted theories was Rostow’s linear stages of growth model, modified from Marx’s stages theory of development, focusing upon the accumulation of capital through the utilization of both domestic savings and foreign investment as a means of creating economic growth and development.1 The Rostow model postulates that an economy goes through five stages of development – the traditional society, the pre-conditions of take-off, the take-off, the drive to maturity, and the age of mass consumption.2

However other economists pointed out that that capital accumulation is not a sufficient condition one its own for development and other cultural, political, social, institutional and geographical factors are also important in creating the right conditions for development.

Michael E. Porter postulated a linear stage model emphasizing a nation’s type of development drivers as a source of competitive advantage.3 Porter postulated that a factor driven economy gains its competitive advantage from natural resources, favorable conditions for growing crops, and low cost labor sources, an investment driven economy from the willingness of firms and individuals to invest in modern plant, equipment, and technologies, an innovation driven economy based on firms creating novel processes, products, and business models, and a wealth driven economy (also one in decline) where investment is based on accumulated capital in low risk ventures and activities like shopping centers.

Lean Production-Inside the Real War on Public Education | Jacobin

Lean Production-Inside the Real War on Public Education | Jacobin | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

By Will Johnson

"On September 10, nearly 30,000 Chicago teachers went on strike for the first time in 25 years. This was no mere breakdown in negotiations over wages or healthcare contributions. At issue, as many have noted, was the fundamental direction of public education. The Chicago teachers asserted themselves as the first institutional force to combat what’s often called the “business model” of education reform.

"Meanwhile, in Detroit, students and teachers returned to dramatically altered schools. Over the summer, Roy Roberts, the schools’ “emergency financial manager,” had unilaterally imposed a contract on the city’s teacher union allowing elementary school class sizes to jump from 25 to 40 students and high school classes to 61 students. These class size reforms were coupled with a ten percent pay cut for Detroit teachers.

"While Detroit’s example is extreme, increased workloads for decreased pay are what teachers around the country — including in Chicago— are experiencing to varying degrees as the business model of education reform gains traction with policy-makers. But stretching workers past their breaking point and increasing hours while gutting compensation is nothing new. The business model of education reform is an extension of a process called lean production that transformed the U.S. private sector in the 1980s and 90s. In education, just as in heavy manufacturing, the greatest damage done by lean production is not done at the bargaining table, but in the destruction of teachers’ working (and students’ learning) conditions."

Inequality Is Holding Back The Recovery | NY Times

Inequality Is Holding Back The Recovery | NY Times | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

By Joseph Stiglitz

There are four major reasons inequality is squelching our recovery. The most immediate is that our middle class is too weak to support the consumer spending that has historically driven our economic growth. While the top 1 percent of income earners took home 93 percent of the growth in incomes in 2010, the households in the middle — who are most likely to spend their incomes rather than save them and who are, in a sense, the true job creators — have lower household incomes, adjusted for inflation, than they did in 1996. The growth in the decade before the crisis was unsustainable — it was reliant on the bottom 80 percent consuming about 110 percent of their income.

Second, the hollowing out of the middle class since the 1970s, a phenomenon interrupted only briefly in the 1990s, means that they are unable to invest in their future, by educating themselves and their children and by starting or improving businesses.

Third, the weakness of the middle class is holding back tax receipts, especially because those at the top are so adroit in avoiding taxes and in getting Washington to give them tax breaks. The recent modest agreement to restore Clinton-level marginal income-tax rates for individuals making more than $400,000 and households making more than $450,000 did nothing to change this. Returns from Wall Street speculation are taxed at a far lower rate than other forms of income. Low tax receipts mean that the government cannot make the vital investments in infrastructure, education, research and health that are crucial for restoring long-term economic strength.

Fourth, inequality is associated with more frequent and more severe boom-and-bust cycles that make our economy more volatile and vulnerable. Though inequality did not directly cause the crisis, it is no coincidence that the 1920s — the last time inequality of income and wealth in the United States was so high — ended with the Great Crash and the Depression. The International Monetary Fund has noted the systematic relationship between economic instability and economic inequality, but American leaders haven’t absorbed the lesson.

Our skyrocketing inequality — so contrary to our meritocratic ideal of America as a place where anyone with hard work and talent can “make it” — means that those who are born to parents of limited means are likely never to live up to their potential. Children in other rich countries like Canada, France, Germany and Sweden have a better chance of doing better than their parents did than American kids have. More than a fifth of our children live in poverty — the second worst of all the advanced economies, putting us behind countries like Bulgaria, Latvia and Greece.

The Iraq War "Surge" Myth Returns

The Iraq War "Surge" Myth Returns | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
What was ultimately left behind was not only a devastated Iraqi population but an authoritarian Shiite government.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is a very compelling article. The video link to “Collateral Murder” from Wikileaks leaves no wonder why the government is after the founder and is not for the faint hearted to view. I'm sure there is a flip side to this story. The US soldiers were taking sniper fire some distance away and it is discussed. I have no doubt the young soldier’s assessment of the situation is also true about how common place awful events were to innocent on both sides of the battle. The sad thing is when it is unarmed innocence and children that are insured and killed it is even worse for both sides.

Citizens, United | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

by MICHAEL CHARNEY

As much of us take time this weekend to celebrate the man whose name is synonymous with the fight for civil rights in America, we also note the third anniversary of Citizens United v FEC, the Supreme Court decision which effectively devalued our greatest right of all—the right to have our vote mean something.

In favoring Citizens United the Supreme Court effectively cemented the move from “one person, one vote” to “one dollar, one vote.”
