Chris Hayes Responds, Politely with a Maybe, to C-PAC (Conservative Political Action Conference)

Chris Hayes Responds, Politely with a Maybe, to C-PAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

Excerpts from article by Chris Hayes, MSNBC [see video]

Yes, the legendary Conservative Political Action Conference had invited yours truly to participate at its 40th annual conference this March. I was specifically invited to be part of a panel called: “CSI Washington, D.C.: November 2012 Autopsy” along with Ann Marie Buerkle, John Fund, Michael Barone and Ralph Reed. I would be among 10,000 hard core conservative activists gracing the same stage as everyone from Marco Rubio to Sarah Palin to Mitt Romney, who have used the occasion to flaunt their conservative bona fides.

My initial reaction was: of course I’ll go! As someone who attempts to convene discussions across various ideological boundaries, I have a special appreciation for CPAC’s willingness to invite someone with my politics to speak to the attendees. And as someone who regularly invites conservatives to sit at our table with a bunch of liberals, leftists and progressives, it seems only sporting (and karmically appropriate) for me to accept.

But then I remembered, thanks to a number of conservatives in my twitter feed, a pretty gross episode from 2011.

That year the board of the American Conservative Union, which sponsors CPAC, voted to ban the gay conservative group GOProud from sponsoring the 2012 conference. GOProud was founded in 2009 by two former Log Cabin Republican staffers and its co-founder Chris Barron told me that one of the first things they did was send a check to the ACU to co-sponsor CPAC. They were accepted as sponsors in 2010 and in 2011, but social conservatives mobilized against them and ultimately prevailed.

...GOProud is not really the point. The point is the principle, which is: it’s not OK to ban organizations for reasons of pure bigotry. But the ACU does this because there’s a powerful constituency within conservatism that won’t have it any other way. It may not even be a majority of conservatives at this point, as a number of conservatives have said to me, but the bigots have enough juice that they call the shots. [MORE including video]

WP Magazine, the Education Issue: After years of crouching, arts ed is raising its hand again

WP Magazine, the Education Issue: After years of crouching, arts ed is raising its hand again | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

Posted by Anne Midgette

From the Washington Post

Schools and arts organizations are teaming up to get students interested in the arts,

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

"excerpt"

Arts education has always depended on inspiration from the one dedicated teacher, the one conductor who turned a roomful of kids onto Beethoven — things impossible to standardize.

Ma’s visit to Savoy Elementary culminated in a performance in the gym in which Ma and the chosen children performed their piece in front of the whole school. Ma then played Saint-Saëns’s “The Swan,” and the students performed for him a work that to 8- and 9-year-olds seemed no less classic, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” — in which the kids on stilts finally had their role.

As the rest of the students sat watching, fidgeting slightly, moving when told, you couldn’t help wondering what message they were getting about the importance of art. But the benefits are tangible, if not always as romantic as people might think.

“I originally thought of … artists’ participation as frosting on the cake,” says the President’s Committee’s Goslins, “but I’m shifting my viewpoint. In really depressed schools like these, always told that the only thing you were good at was failing, when you bring these artists into the schools, what they do for school identity and for the morale of the whole community is really quite profound.”

And the staff at Savoy was equally pragmatic.“For these kids, it was a win-win,” said Anthony Jones, one of the three teaching artists leading Savoy’s immersion program. “Waiting around, four of them chosen [to perform]; the other kids had to watch. Being proud for other people.

“If you can sit there for two hours and focus on something else, then you can sit at that math homework.”

Art isn’t always easy, or fun, or accessible. Sometimes it is about slogging along and getting a job done. Sometimes it makes for a nice change from routine. Sometimes it awakens a sense of possibilities, and if the actual experience doesn’t live up to that — if Great Art doesn’t come to your school — making a space for it to happen may prove, in the long run, the more valuable experience.

This is based on a new belief — after years of emphasis on standardized testing — in the power of the arts. Today, more and more policymakers think it is the arts, after all, that can motivate kids, engage them and help them develop 21st-century skills such as teamwork and innovative thinking — in sum, be the key to their salvation.

Rick Scott's tea party divorce

Rick Scott's tea party divorce | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

by Adam C. Smith, Tampa Bay Times

"I can tell you what his ideology is: getting re-elected," scoffed John Long, chairman of the Tea Party of Florida, a former Scott supporter now working to recruit a "dependable" fiscal conservative to challenge Scott in a 2014 primary. "He spent a lot of money to get elected, and I don't think he got elected with the intention to be a one-term wonder. To prove it, he's alienated the very people who got him elected in the first place."

With his Medicaid decision this week, Scott officially and forever cast off his image as a tea party standard-bearer. Just glance at most of the recent comments on his Facebook page if you have doubts.

"Agreeing to expand Medicaid in Florida is your 'Charlie Christ hugs Obama' moment. Very disappointed in your decision. . . . Be proud to call yourself a RINO (Republican in Name Only)," wrote Jackie Soler-Gonzalez.

"First the SunRail (an Orlando commuter rail project), now Obamacare. Seems you are not standing firm on the topics that got you voted in sir. . . . Thank you for showing me I can't believe in anyone in politics," wrote Leslie Smith.

While I am grateful that Governor scott has signed on to the health care program, I am cautious. This mans track record with regard to healthcare, past and present, makes me wonder if he hasn't found away to cash in on it, at tax payers expense. I hope there are safe guards in place.

Some very good changes in terms we use that I believe will prove effective in our discourse.

Portland Coffee Party's comment, February 25, 2013 1:04 PM
I humbly disagree. This type of marketing exercise is a disgusting reflection of today's political leadership in America (I am only assuming the author feels they are a leader). The ideas described here are powerful enough to stand on their own. You don't have to put "spin" on them. Only morons can be fooled by clever word-play -- and these are not all that. Here's a novel approach; try and be BETTER than the current load of slick-willies and crap peddlers that pervade Washington and the 1% media. Sit down with your neighbors and have an honest discussion surrounding desired policies instead of coming up with a better slogans. Remember: If you roll in the mud with the other pigs, you'll only end up covered in the same filth and stench.
Joseph Pomponio's comment, February 25, 2013 7:52 PM

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Targeting the intuitive impulses to override the rational parts of our thinking is key to advertising success whether you sale a product, an official or a war.

We need to decide what we as a society want to be convinced to "BUY INTO" then regroup our media to promote those values and concerns and get our rational thought attached to your intuitive reactions to help us make the best choices for our future..

For a short time, watch Richard Wolf's compelling lecture on the root causes of America's recent financial crisis.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is a lecture that is great for everyone to listen to whether you agree with the points or not. Prof. Wolff really gets you thinking about what has been going on over the last 30 years or so. Talks like this motivate a person to watch closer and think deeper as he provides more valid thinking points to consider in designing our future course.
