Jewel v. NSA

Jewel v. NSA | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
In Jewel v. NSA, EFF is suing the NSA and other government agencies on behalf of AT&T customers to stop the illegal unconstitutional and ongoing dragnet surveillance of their communications and communications records.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

"The Obama administration moved to dismiss Jewel in 2009, claiming that litigation over the wiretapping program would require the government to disclose privileged “state secrets” and that it was immune from suit.  The court instead ruled that the case should be dismissed on standing grounds.  Fortunately, in December of 2011, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Plaintiffs’ allegations were sufficient to provide standing and Jewel could proceed in district court.

In July, 2012, EFF moved to have the court declare that the FISA law applies instead of the state secrets privilege; in September, 2012 the government renewed its "state secrets" claims and the matter was heard by the federal district court in San Francisco on December 14, 2012.

In July 2013, the court rejected the government’s “state secrets” argument, ruling that any properly classified details can be litigated under the..." [Read the newsletter for more details....]

(Also, the EFF seeks to demand accountability from those that misused power to force the breaking of the 4th Amendment rights of citizens....…Do we just sit back and let this slide? It is a fact that if enough citizens/customers speak up elected officials and corporations will adjust behavior, at least till we catch them at something again. Think of it as looking out for the harm two year olds can do and we should never take our eyes off of either our government or our industries for fear they might hurt themselves and burn all our houses down satisfying immediate desires without supervision. We can't be represented if we don't pay attention, get educated and weigh in on matters. Citizens standing up and together in large numbers on important matters is the main way all our major changes happened in history we need to not get lazy or apathetic about that}

Excerpt:

"In addition to suing the government agencies involved in the domestic dragnet, Jewel v. NSAalso targets the individuals responsible for creating authorizing and implementing the illegal program including DIRNSA Keith Alexander and former Vice President Dick Cheney, Cheney’s former chief of staff David Addington, former Attorney General and White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, and other individuals who ordered or participated in the warrantless domestic surveillance."

Is there any other way to get elected to the highest office?
Monica S Mcfeeters's comment, December 25, 2013 12:33 PM
Seems to need a massive intervention from concerned citizens to make the changes he was talking about. When folks suddenly wake up and see they were fleeced things get ugly and they stop asking for wealthy to play nice and share. That is how we end up with militarized socialism or communism. It wasn't from giving out too much education, food or medical care. I don't think most mind some having even a good bit more then others….But things are really out of hand on the equality and fair play issue. Where did the rich and greedy that survived the backlash takeovers of Russia and Cuba run to and why? Not that I think that worked out all that great for the ones that shaped the new government…. that is why both the wealthy and the 99% all need to work together to make things better for all of us no matter were folks live on the planet. There aren't any more places to run to now. The more the powers that be try to stop those like Snowden, Manning. Swartz, Hammond and other whistle blowers and the millions that agree with them the more of those they will find they have left no other choice for but to revolt..Let's hope we can turn that tide and wake folks up while we could still shape a good turn around….At this point though It doesn't seem anyone can get elected to that office or hardly any other high levels at the national or state level and not be corrupted.
Rhett Rebold's comment, December 25, 2013 3:39 PM
Yes, we are on the same page. Publically funding elections would go a long way to stop candidates from being so beholden to corporate interests.

Amazingly clear and detailed "view" of where wealth is concentrated. Drilling into zip codes shows remarkable details without being overwhelming. This is simultaneously revealing and mesmerizing. As I looked at it, I couldn't help wondering how and why it is that the people living in the vast "dark" regions of the South and the Great Plains insist on voting against their own economic self-interests by voting for representatives who insist on the lie of trickle-down economics and persistent austerity as the strategy for prosperity.

Ishwer Singh's curator insight, January 20, 2014 6:56 AM

This picture shows the cocentrations of poverty and affluence.  The areas hilighted in yellow show the areas which are wealthy and the dark blue showing the poor. This coincides with the amout of pay and the education levels in these countries. Areas such as Boston, New York and Washington show high cocentrations of affluence. These areas also have much higher education systems and more well -paid jobs. Countries which are highlighted in dark blue are countries with lesser education and lesser paid jobs. This shows the  extent at which poverty can affect a country.

Stratfor hacker Jeremy Hammond sentenced to ten years in jail

Internet activist Jeremy Hammond who pleaded guilty to hacking servers of the private intelligence company Statfor and leaking its information to anti-secrecy site, WikiLeaks, was sentenced to ten years in jail on Friday, November 15.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

"What the United States could not accomplish legally, it used Sabu, and by extension, me and my co-defendants, to accomplish illegally,” Hammond wrote. “Why was the United States using us to infiltrate the private networks of foreign governments? What are they doing with the information we stole? And will anyone in our government ever be held accountable for these crimes?”

Following Hammond’s conviction, his supporters released documents online that listed all the attacks carried out between January and February of 2012 at the request of the FBI. Brazil, Turkey, Syria, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Nigeria, Iran, Slovenia, Greece, Pakistan are specifically named as nations targeted during these attacks.

David Seaman, an independent journalist and podcast host, told RT that “if this was an FBI operation they probably should have given him a paycheck instead of sending him to prison for the next 10 years.” Hundreds of Hammond supporters sent letters to Hammond’s judge asking for leniency in the case to no avail.

“America is facing a brain drain right now. We are the inventors of the internet,” Seaman said. “We need as many smart people as possible to innovate. This is a brilliant guy, it’s a guy who’s 28 years old, is clearly brilliant. If he was impressionable and an FBI informant who is charismatic is telling him to do something and he does it, that needs to be taken into consideration by the judge and apparently it wasn’t… We gave the world the Internet and now we’re kind of destroying it.”

On Friday, reading his sentencing statement, Hammond again insisted that he shared information about online vulnerabilities with FBI informant Sabu, who later targeted websites in Turkey, Iran and Brazil.

Hon. Loretta Preska, Chief Judge, Southern District of New York (Image from uscourts.gov)

The controversial case has also ensnared the presiding judge, Loretta Preska, whose husband Thomas Kaveler was implicated in the leaked emails. Kaveler is an employee of Cahill Gordon & Reindell LLP, a Stratfor client and associate, and many Hammond supporters claimed that Preska’s impartiality is harmed by this conflict of interest. Preska denied the charge, however, and Hammond’s lawyers were unsuccessful in their attempt to force her recusal.

On Friday Judge Preska handed down a maximum sentence for Jeremy Hammond under his plea deal - 120 months in prison. After serving his jail term, Hammond will also be subject to three years under supervised release.

In response to Hammond's sentencing, WikiLeaks released over 500 thousand new files on Stratfor on Friday, bringing the total to over 5.5 million. The latest file dump was announced by the organization via its Twitter feed, using the hashtag #freehammond.

This is the message they are sending, this is worse than so many more monstrous things that go on in the world, the system is tucked and it's raping you and your family, wake up.

poor dumb jeremy. he did more harm than good. stratfor is a clearing house. they are not a place of good intelligence. they are a place to read alternate opinions with access to good intelligence. harming stratfor is like plugging up one of the leaks because now their sources become more tight lipped. IMO, jeremy just wanted attention. Either that he he was just too simple minded to understand the repurcussions of his actions.

Florida Governor Blasted For Deaths Of 40 Children | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
South Florida Democrats fired a stinging rebuke at Gov. Rick Scott (R) Thursday, holding him responsible for the deaths of 40 children who were known to state child welfare workers when they died during the first half of 2013.

Via pdeppisch, Jocelyn Stoller
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is the sad, actual result of smaller government and the wrong thinking that private citizen’s good will and giving alone can fill the gaps are government services provide. There are ways to save money but the sacrifice has been taken from those that are most vulnerable or have the least. The large loop holes for the rich and the slap on the hand fines for corrupt, negligent or criminal behavior by corporations and their leaders run up cost by for local communities.  There has been a push to continue to allow corporations and their leaders to hide from taxation the huge profits that the workforce and customers helped to create.  Companies look for ways to dodge paying into our collective community advancement and interest through taxes and actively lobby to get the laws change to help them do this.  Right now the push/lobby is to lower the amount these large corporations are taxed while locally owned or small businesses do not enjoy the same tax breaks.

Corporations and the wealthiest stock holders seem to have the idea that bigger and merged business and collective bargaining (industry lobby and wealthy collective ownership) is great for them because “That allows for providing better services to the public customers”. That is the argument that is always given. The same wealthy owners of these corporations argue and push the idea that the opposite is true for their workers and customers and everyone else. When they collectively bargain it is private and capitalism, but when citizens or workers collectively stand up to look after their own interest it is socialism and harmful. Who sees the contradiction in such thinking?

These 40 deaths in just one time period in just one state show that well intending neighbors and family members are not always in a position to help others in need.  The push for the last 30 years to allow industry and the wealthy to gain as much as they can with the thinking those gains would rain down or “trickle” to share the collectively earned profits to workers and communities at large was a dream and did not happen. This idea has starved both the governments and the people they represent.

Is Moscow’s Tech Hub a $5.4 Billion Sinkhole or the World’s Next Great Innovation Center? | Slate.com

Is Moscow’s Tech Hub a $5.4 Billion Sinkhole or the World’s Next Great Innovation Center? | Slate.com | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

The view from the roof of the seven-story, mesh- and LED-covered Hypercube building is one of modern-day Russia, where just 110 billionaires control 35 percent of the household wealth. Immediately to the south is a golf course built by President Vladimir Putin's “favorite oligarch,” Roman Abramovich (net worth $10.2 billion), who reportedly owns a residence in the neighboring village along with Suleiman Kerimov (net worth $7.1 billion) and Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov (net worth $13 billion).

The Hypercube is the first building of the Skolkovo “innovation city” at the edge of Moscow. While the Kremlin-connected billionaires next door all made fortunes off Russia's natural resources, the implicit goal of the Skolkovo innovation hub is to move the country's economy away from oil and oligarchs by jump-starting the tech startup industry. Allegations of corruption, construction delays, and political conflicts have plagued the project, but it has nevertheless continued to amass resident companies and further investment. But the jury is out on whether Skolkovo will be able to stimulate Russia's entrepreneurial environment—and justify an estimated $5.4 billion in government spending.

From the start, Skolkovo was trumpeted as Russia's answer to Silicon Valley. Soon after he started the project on New Year's Eve 2009, then-President Dmitry Medvedev jetted off to the actual Silicon Valley to schmooze with Steve Jobs and Arnold Schwarzenegger, then governor of California. Medvedev also visited Cisco, which signed an agreement to invest $100 million of venture capital in Skolkovo. IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia Siemens Networks, and others later signed agreements, too, while MIT signed up to advise on the creation of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech).

In some ways, Skolkovo is eerily reminiscent of Soviet utopian city-building projects. Plans for the 1,000-acre site include a technopark; a cultural center; research clusters for five strategic industries (IT, biomedical, energy, nuclear, space and telecommunications); 50 research and development centers; a hospital; a school; and apartments, townhouses, and offices where an estimated 30,000 people will live and work. Besides the Hypercube, only the foundations of the technopark building and the carcass of the Matryoshka office building—which will feature an eight-story atrium in the shape of a Russian nesting doll—have been built so far. Already, though, the 1,000-plus Skolkovo resident companies don't have to pay any income tax, value-added tax, or property tax for 10 years, as long as they remain under certain limits on revenues and profits.

"Our nation created Guantánamo because we were legitimately angry and frightened by an unprovoked attack on our soil on Sept. 11, 2001. We thought that the detainees would provide a treasure trove of information and intelligence," he wrote.

"In retrospect, the entire detention and interrogation strategy was wrong. We squandered the goodwill of the world after we were attacked by our actions in Guantánamo, both in terms of detention and torture. Our decision to keep Guantánamo open has helped our enemies because it validates every negative perception of the United States."

Comic Relief funds invested in arms

Comic Relief funds invested in arms | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

Millions of pounds donated to Comic Relief have been invested in funds with shares in tobacco, alcohol and arms firms, BBC Panorama has learned.

The BBC has also seen evidence which suggests Save the Children censored criticism of energy firms, to avoid upsetting corporate partners.

Comic Relief said it used its funds to "deliver the greatest benefits to the most vulnerable people".

Save the Children said its campaigns were unaffected by any partnerships.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This shows contradictions and hypocrisy at best!

Excerpt:

Comic Relief has raised nearly £1bn for worthwhile causes in the UK and abroad.

It pays out the money it receives to other charities, sometimes over several years.

That means Comic Relief holds tens of millions of pounds at any one time.

The charity uses a number of managed funds which invests that money on the charity's behalf, including in the stock market.

Panorama has learnt that between 2007 and 2009, some of these investments, amounting to millions of pounds, appear to contradict several of its core aims.

Despite its mission statement claiming it is committed to helping "people affected by conflict", in 2009 the charity had £630,000 invested in shares in weapons firm BAE Systems.
