Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Today is the fourth anniversary of Dodd-Frank, the law that established the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau -- and the third anniversary of the date the CFPB became an independent agency. And in those three years, the agency has done a lot to help level the playing field:

  • The CFPB has forced big financial companies to return more than $4 billion dollars to consumers they cheated.
  • The CFPB has put in place rules to protect consumers from a whole host of dangerous financial products and to make sure that companies can't issue the kinds of deceptive mortgages that contributed to millions of foreclosures.
  • The CFPB has helped tens of thousands of consumers resolve complaints against financial institutions that cheated them.

Watch Rachel Maddow Explain Why This Is the WORST Congress Ever (Video)

Watch Rachel Maddow Explain Why This Is the WORST Congress Ever (Video) | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
Rachel Maddow breaks it down: 'This Congress is -- quantitatively -- the WORST Congress ever!' Thanks, GOP.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

All the topics covered in this video are so important. The VA issue is one that hits very close to home. I was so sadden when the Head of the VA stepped down as though all this was his fault. In fact that is twice he has taken a hit for other people's stupid choices. HE was on of the four very respected generals fired by Rumsfeld because they told him before going into Iraq that 30,000 troops could not do it right and it would take at least 145,000. It was not the General's fault this time either. The VA has been underfunded and auctioned off to the lowest bidder starting with Bush Senior then going for another huge blow under Clinton who delivered even more to the contracting work of HMOs and even more outfits that hired contract doctors and medical professionals that basically blew through the military system not even with the status of civil servants.

This administration actually was building this VA medical system back up. The problem is their big hearts also thought Agent Orange victims from the Vietnam war should finally be treated (those that haven't already died) and so should the mental health cases of the last decades. This over-loaded the lean medical care system Bush Senior and Clinton put in place. But leaving them with nothing also was costing lives. Agent Orange victims and their offspring were becoming sicker and suicides for soldiers after over a decade of war had become daily events. Waiting even longer it treat them (ready or not) wasn’t an option.

I fear this congress is staging all this to further action off the VA system, which while expensive, was one of the greatest medical care systems in our nation’s history. We once trained very smart, but often-poor students in the best medical professional schools they could get into to. They paid us back with 5 years or even sometimes a lifetime of excellent service for modest salaries that including nice housing and left them with no school debt in return. It was a good trade for many on both sides of the system. I think we should do that again for both military and Medicare/Medicaid professionals and build for them the best facilities and research opportunities as we once did with the VA medical system. Provide lovely housing and perks, pay a decent, but not millionaire salary and they pay society back with committed years of work. If they trade us a lifetime of work they then earn good lifetime benefits as well.  For-profit outfits have a first obligation to make the shareholders rich not make sick people well. The old VA system put all our medical dollars into the medical care program and not into pockets of share holders.

Bill Maher to Tea Party 'I am scared of the cops and I'm White'

Bill Maher to Tea Party 'I am scared of the cops and I'm White' | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
Watch Bill Maher's message to the Tea Party and Conservatives as America's local police departments arm as if going to war with citizens.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Well, I have to admit he has a point. I also now see why the people in the South really want to load up on guns. I too see why those Southern police departments want tanks. The Southern flag waving, bible packing and gun toting folks can roll out some hard core good times and bad times when they are not actively engaged in one of those three listed activities. Though I have yet to hear of any activities that would require a militarized police force when all states already have their own National Guard to deploy. In Yemen every man has a weapon and visitors are warned not to enter the country unarmed.

Looking at this map might show the old days of the inviting friendly Southern image may be a thing of the past. You have to have some really mean, nasty dogs in your mist to feel the need for your own tanks and military weapons at your local police department. However if the bad guys have this stuff… what can you do? How did bad guys get that stuff?  Can anyone just buy it?

So ya'll are welcome to come to Mississippi where we are one of the only states left that doesn't have local military police. I do think our town has a remodeled Swann Food SWAT truck at the police department for our city of 3,000. They are serious policemen that will do everything from hunt down murderers, bust drug houses and help you with extreme water leaks. And all that is true. My favorite thing they did was set up an annoying roadblock on our road until the local drug house on our street either got arrested or moved or both. I honestly thought that was a quietly, slick way to handle things…. You just had to remember to bring your documents. It is also true I didn’t lock my door for 8 years unless I went out of town or State.

I’m gone a lot these days and now have a security system to which those same police are there in a heartbeat even if it is just myself forgetting I set the alarm. Regardless of the hearsay, Mississippians are still more likely to greet you, no matter what color you are, with smiles and cookies rather than then guns. Just don't get between them and the deer! Southerns and deer are like Arabs and Europeans are about lamb, snails, goat and camels. They say yum and we say yuk. There are plenty of Central and South Americans and Arabs and Indians from India in Mississippi and I don't know if they have gotten into the hunter’s mindset, but I think so. Nearly everyone else that was homegrown in Mississippi whether they are Choctaw, black or white hunts…Oddly enough this is actually good news if you want to live among a bunch of people that want to leave the land wild and natural for large bodies of forest, water and creatures to thrive.

Light points aside…..Do we really need our police departments to look as this map shows? Throughout history giving a man a new, improved weapon meant the next guy had to go find at least that or better. Do we need local arms wars? The regular guys are always the ones doing the killing….All we have to do lay them down to stop it on both sides. Cease fire they call it. Look at all the violence over the world and everyone outside their little world says. "Why are you doing that"? All you have to do is stop and really work things out. If that isn't the real plan then the other plan is murder plain and simple.

New York Times
Technology, Aided by Recession, Is Polarizing the Work World
New York Times
A new working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research shows how the recession accelerated the displacement of these midwage jobs.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is a serious topic the entire globe needs to get into a debate.

How do people earn a living in a world that increasingly doesn't need people to make it run?

Technology has changed the demand for human labor. What do we do? There are just going to be far, far more willing to work then work needing to be done in the same ways that it has been in the past And no!….Everyone is not going to be able to find a tech job or coding job….The jobs as they are to day just don't add up to the number of people needing to work.

A redesign is due and needed quickly. We haven't even started the real discussion on wealth re-distribution yet. We are going to have to redefine what we give added value to and how people earn money.

The EU-US TTIP trade agreement would 'protect investors' by giving them the right to sue national government for changes in the law that reduce their returns, writes Cécile Toubeau - putting an end to progress on environment and human development.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
TTIP-Undermining National and local rights and doing it on tax payers dimes. Excerpt:Alarm bells on ISDS are ringing this loud for a reason: ISDS allows foreign firms to bypass domestic courts and sue governments (hence citizens, through taxes) directly in private trade tribunals if they feel that a government's action can unfairly diminish future returns on their investments.Until recently, ISDS provisions mostly featured in bilateral state-to-state investment treaties, and were designed to offer investors protection from actions by governments in countries with legal systems perceived to be poorly developed.

Gaza: Israel's $4 billion gas grab

Gaza: Israel's $4 billion gas grab | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
Never mind the 'war on terror' rhetoric, writes Nafeez Ahmed. The purpose of Israel's escalating assault on Gaza is to control the Territory's 1.4 trillion cubic feet of gas - and so keep Palestine poor and weak, gain massive export revenues, and avert its own domestic energy crisis.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
Interesting to learn of possible motivations people have for doing things. Would the death of three teens by unknown killers be the motivation for all this kind of destruction and deaths or would 4 billion be a bigger motivation and access to the tiny little piece of ocean Palestine is allow to considered it's own that happens to have that gas below it just might be a greater motivator? That would even make a good movie where some greedy oil guy just kidnaps and does in 3 teens just to get at the Gas deals and other resources.

s a fasinatelAlmajiri boys RAG-CLAD boys, proffering plastic bowls and calling out for cash, line the streets of most big cities in Nigeria’s Muslim north. But they are not...

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This was a fascinating article to read. The author creates a peak into the global issue of religion VS education VS traditional culture and the treatment and raising of children. The writer gets the reader to ask many reflective questions regarding personal values, traditions, education, family, faith and the changing modernization of the world and that is good. No answers are handed on platters and no judgment is made here. It is always important to zero in on the question if you seek to find an answer. The writer inspires reflective thinking to shared cultural dilemmas. The religions, geography, family and community structures may differ but the question of how and what values are maintained or blend with the new across a change are universal.

The trade off that is felt and often feared by the families, communities, and faithful or religious the world over is real. One is changed by the introduction of what they fear and what is new. That is the truth. There is a book called "The Axe Makers Gifts" that speaks about the double edge sword that progress and innovation brings. Usually there are great gifts to mankind.  But these gifts come with a trade off of something you give up or also allow the ability to abuse and misuse the intended blessing. Often, without noticing the changes come slowly, other times the new and amazing is so intriguing we can hardly resist.  We move on in a direction without noticing the changes in the short term.  One day we turn around and ask when did some of our very strong social and spiritual support structure disappear or get so weak or fragmented? When did those we thought we could trust change? When did it happen and how did it happen? Does it matter? If it matters how in the world can we rebuild it or even enhance what we once took for granted? What should we embrace? What should we hold to and what should we try to bind together as old and new and move into new destinies with?

In a less than a single generation it is likely we have made more changes in nearly every aspect of our lives and the planet then people before us did over hundreds of years.  Reflective thinking about what is valuable to societies before we race into the future would be very wise. Take time to read the article and  find your own questions to bring to the table and think through together.

Government reforms will 'probably kill stand-alone solar PV in the UK'

Government reforms will 'probably kill stand-alone solar PV in the UK' | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
By publishing its 'reform' proposals for the support of large scale solar PV in two separate documents on the same day, the Government managed to conceal its true intent from the industry, writes Chris Goodall. The truth is much worse than anyone realised.

Via Gordon McGlone
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

They need to team up with industry to off set the new added cost to install these solar farms by locating them in parking lots doubling as parking cover over cars. Paved areas contribute to a lot of heat anyway and the land is already unavailable for farming and ugly.  Solar Panels could make it be more comfortable and attractive with good design underneath. I have read that some places are already doing this. Industries with parking lots could help offset the cost and in return get energy back to use as well.

There are usually cameras and security already in those areas that could help protect the panels from abuse. We need to this in all developed countries with tons of ugly often too hot, cold, windy or wet parking lots. They would need to  carefully designed cart and walking trails and driving areas that are not a pain and are easy to use so people will stay on and enjoy the people and car spaces and not tear up the supporting structures of the panels. Why not use the land we have already ruined for farming and herding? This is a natural and the land is already cleared of trees.

Is stand alone solar PV energy dead in the UK? Has the UK govt concealed its true intention by some sneaky information management?

malek's comment, July 21, 4:04 AM
The snag is, that if no-one wants grid power, those windmills and solar arrays are going to be effectively useless. So stop building them and subsidising them NOW.
Monica S Mcfeeters's comment, July 21, 5:11 AM
Yes, But nobody likes coal or oil lines in their backyard either and that hasn't stop subsidising for them. Black lung and black waters are not very popular either. I do think there is good reason for business and private individuals to off set cost if they can participate in the dividends both in energy use and profits. I would put a solar panel in my yard, or over my vehicles…..But don't ask my to dig a coal mine there.

"These punitive measures are proven to be ineffective, and yet our state chooses to waste tax dollars locking up women instead of getting them the health care they need."
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

All that is required is a positive test to certain drugs to go to prison for assault. Oh, and never mind that some of the worst and most dangerous drugs for the unborn are given under prescription and often are not abused or even addictive. Also most women that have actual addictions would find it very difficult to find well run affordable rehabs even if they wanted to recover. What are your thoughts on this? Who turns the women in? Her own OBGYN doctor? It did not say she even has to have been arrested for anything other than a positive test during pregnancy…Does every women have to get tested? Why isn't dad tested prior to being allowed to have sex? These ideas came to my mind as I read this ….Most anyone thinks women or men using anything like drugs, booze, cigarettes or have poor eating habits should wait to have children till they get everything right….But that might lower the population far too quickly. Would these women be inclined to find a OBGYN or a back alley abortion from someone who would not report them?
