Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:"What characterizes American government today is not so much dysfunctional politics as it is ruthlessly contrived governance carried out behind the entertaining, distracting and disingenuous curtain of political theater. And what political theater it is, diabolically Shakespearean at times, full of sound and fury, yet in the end, signifying nothing."

This article is great! This focuses on the way we seem to be played and distracted from key decisions and deals we need to focus on the most or at least as much by a constant stream of hotspot topics that gets everyone screaming at each other or defending one of the same old hot topics. All of this is too much like the classic old western movie skit where the playwright creates a distraction which is often a fight in the street while that leaves the ones not noticed free to rob the bank or do some other deed unnoticed. The audience always gets to know both actions but in our real cases we are not the audience but the one's distracted. We could look around and notice in these times of modern communication just like those in the movie could have but the guy writing the play stages it so they would not. While we watch the movie we want to say turn around and see what’s going on! Sadly in real life those that are telling us “turn around and look” are quickly branded as people we shouldn’t listen to or should be not trust.

While the invasive powers bestowed upon the federal government by FISA and the NDAA should be cause for alarm, they have become part of the unchallenged post-9/11 paradigm that disguises itself as representative government today. This matter-of-fact, all-in-a-day’s work erosion of our freedoms is no less appalling than the routine, relatively uncontested renewal of legislation, passed without debate or question year after year, which flies in the face of every fundamental principle of individual liberty on which this nation was founded. Such is the political playbook being used to chart the nation’s course these days.

President Obama’s decision to sign the NDAA, quietly and without much fanfare, while the fiscal cliff debate took front stage is a perfect example of political theater at its finest. The NDAA establishes a colossal $633 billion budget for the military at a time when the nation is drowning in debt, the deficit is skyrocketing, our military empire is overextended, and America is allegedly ratcheting down its presence in the Middle East....

...Indeed, the fact that Americans are utterly dependent on a small group of judges, themselves part of the ruling elite in America, to safeguard their fundamental freedoms shows just how far we’ve fallen as a society and culture. When the rights and liberties which we once took for granted are little more than exceptions to the rule, open to interpretation by government officials who can throw them out based upon expediency, we have entered a new paradigm in America, and it doesn’t bode well for the future of democracy.

Very nicely put Monica. These important issues in our country today are like junk food. Before you know it, you're out of shape and too fat to move.

Bill Moyers talks with former Citigroup chairman John Reed and former Senator Byron Dorgan to explore how our political and financial class shift economic benefits to the very top.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I cannot recommend this Bill Moyer episode enough. It will enlighten so many people to what changes took place as a key to cause the economy to be bailed out or most have likely failed a little over four years ago. It is would worth the watch  and a share for even more people to start the new year with their eyes wide open and more fully informed about something as important as our past which if we are not careful also becomes our future again, and again.

Please take time to watch thisI cannot recommend this Bill Moyer episode enough.Key players that altered the economic security of all of us, this nation and the world speak out here. The changes discussed here and the Libor scandal have played a huge role in changing the lives of the once strong middle class and harvesting the wealth of nations to the hands of a few.
