The Internet’s Anonymous Nazis Have Realized They Played Themselves Now That Trump Plans to Kill Internet Privacy | Andy Cush | SPIN.com | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

Yesterday, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill that will kill the Federal Communications Commission’s rules preventing internet service providers from selling users’ browsing data to advertisers and other third parties. Donald Trump’s White House has indicated that it intends to sign the bill into law, a move that will drastically roll back the privacy rights of ordinary people on the internet. If the armies of anonymous right-wing trolls who helped propel the president to victory aren’t second-guessing their Trump support right about now, they really should be.

Last year, when the FCC was still under Democratic control, it passed rules that would require ISPs like Comcast and Verizon to obtain their customers’ explicit permission before sharing information like browser history and geographical data with other companies, a move that was hailed as a major step forward for online privacy at the time. The new law will eliminate those rules, reopening the path for providers to sell data about your porn viewing habits or the time you spend reading disreputable music publications to advertisers hoping to build detailed profiles of their potential customers.

During the presidential campaign, anonymous internet forums like Reddit, 4chan and 8chan, and the dingiest corners of Twitter emerged as major hubs for Trump supporters. “I’m fucking trembling out of excitement brahs,”one user of 4chan’s nihilistic right-wing politics board /pol/ proclaimed after Trump’s victory. “We actually elected a meme as president.”

The only thing chan trolls care about as much as ethics in gaming journalism and securing a future for white children is access to an internet that’s unfettered by snooping corporate interlopers. The entire identity of a Trump-loving 4chan poster is wrapped up in the anonymity of the internet, and the ability to do whatever you want online without consequences, whether it’s telling elaborate inside jokes on message boards or harassing liberal journalists on Twitter. The elimination of the FCC’s Obama-era privacy protections is a major blow to the idea of a free and open internet.

The House of Representatives joined the Senate Tuesday in voting to repeal new Federal Communications Commission rules that would have stopped internet service providers (ISPs) from using and selling consumers’ web browsing data without their consent.

Supporters of the repeal have argued that regulators failed to, in the words of Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, address the “strenuous objections from throughout the internet community” raised during the rule-making process.

But a look at the comments submitted to the FCC reveal that many of the opponents of the privacy regulation came not from any “community” but from groups with extensive financial ties to phone and cable companies — with some of their claims hinging on the absurd.

For instance, the League of United Latin American Citizens and OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, two self-described civil rights organizations, told the FCC that “many consumers, especially households with limited incomes, appreciate receiving relevant advertising that is keyed to their interests and provides them with discounts on the products and services they use.”

Both LULAC and OCA receive funding from Comcast and other ISPs.

Kraig Moss made financial sacrifices last year to follow Donald Trump across the country and tell his own story. Now, he wishes he hadn't.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
This is why I have come to support the value system of people like Bernie Sanders and other like him. Ten years ago I first became aware of the many issues the progressive side was looking at and listened. I realized that many things I valued about this nation had come as a direct result of the efforts of many fine progressives though at the time I really hadn't even thought of the term "progressive". I knew little before meeting these progressives about what was happening to our water, soil, food supply, medical care issues justice system and so much more. I listened and moved on with my life.... As I encountered various medical situations, legal situation and traveled the globe I saw more of the relevance and the critical needs for behavioral changes in society the progressives were trying to encourage. The progressives were asking the most truthful questions. The GOP and traditional Democrats were not . We can't find the right answers if we don't identify the right questions . Also the GOP proved the progressive points by by their own conduct and priorities . The lack of concern for the realities of so many in our society as mentioned in this article is consistent with GOP values and priorities.

To Serve AT&T and Comcast, Congressional GOP Votes to Destroy Online Privacy | Glenn Greenwald | The Intercept.com | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

Clarifying events in politics are often healthy even when they produce awful outcomes. Such is the case with yesterday’s vote by House Republicans to free internet service providers (ISPs) – primarily AT&T, Comcast and Verizon – from the Obama-era FCC regulations barring them from storing and selling their users’ browsing histories without their consent. The vote followed an identical one last week in the Senate exclusively along party lines.

It’s hard to overstate what a blow to individual privacy this is. Unlike Silicon Valley giants like Facebook and Google – which can track and sell only those activities of yours which you engage in while using their specific service – ISPs can track everything you do online. “These companies carry all of your Internet traffic and can examine each packet in detail to build up a profile on you,” explained two experts from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Worse, it is not particularly difficult to avoid using specific services (such as Facebook) that are known to undermine privacy, but consumers often have very few choices for ISPs; it’s a virtual monopoly.

It’s hardly rare for the U.S. Congress to enact measures gutting online privacy: indeed, the last two decades have ushered in a legislative scheme that implements a virtually ubiquitous Surveillance State composed of both public intelligence and military agencies along with their private-sector “partners.” Members of Congress voting for these pro-surveillance measures invariably offer the pretext that they are acting for the benefit of American citizens – whose privacy they are gutting – by Keeping Them Safe™.

But what distinguishes this latest vote is that this pretext is unavailable.

With Trump expected to sign proposed law, resolution would dismantle 'years of privacy protection that people have had in this country'
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
Excerpt: Updated: Despite widespread popular outcry, House Republicans on Tuesday voted to strip citizens' of their right to privacy online, selling out the American public to the deep-pocketed telecom industry. With 215 voting for and 205 against, 15 GOP representatives joined the Democrats in opposing the S.J. Res. 34, a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to repeal the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) privacy provision. Six Republicans and three Democrats abstained. Roll call here.

Does anyone else have an issue with this statement???? We didn't elect anyone to run a company did we? I don't remember the plan being to sell off parts or our public control to private industries pals of Trump and company do you???? Citizens are not his families customers... and we didn't elect him to decide to liquidate the power of citizen ownership or control..... please wake up everyone!!!! A society needs to be run well for sure.... but it's more like a community or a family when run well. It is not a competition of preselected handful or self proclaimed winners that think everyone else is losers because they didn't choose to be greedy and lord over everyone else. That is what this man thinks or he would have ordinary workers and others sitting at the table. None of those he surrounds himself by or respects .... represent the average person .

In my mind telling someone your going to come after them if you don't get what you want from them is the opposite of a negation and is straight up school boy bully or mafia gang behavior.. This half baked, rushed out health bill is a matter of life, death and quality of life relevance to every family in this nation during each persons life... how clueless can Trump and his GOP company be not to get that? Access to care is more important than if Trump or anyone of them wins their election. Perhaps the party of "Me First and you maybe never" needs to go home and take care of their own business instead of pretending the business of others in the nation or the world matters to them.

Trump might admire Putin but I think Obama was more correct to allow Putin to show his disregard for human life in Syria and not stoop to Putin's level.
