Robert Reich: Walgreens shouldn’t have a say about how the U.S. government does anything | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it

..The former secretary of labor weighs in on corporate America's newest bid to reduce its tax bills

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Even if it becomes a Swiss corporation, Walgreen will remain your Main Street druggist. It just won’t pay nearly as much in U.S. taxes.

Which means the rest of us will have to make up the difference. Walgreen’s morph into a Swiss corporation will cost you and me and every other American taxpayer about $4 billion over five years, according to an analysis by Americans for Tax Fairness.

The tax dodge likewise means more money for Walgreen’s investors and top executives. Which is why its large investors – including Goldman Sachs — have been pushing for it.

Some Walgreen customers have complained. A few activists have rallied outside the firm’s Chicago headquarters.

But hey, this is the way the global capitalist game played. Anything to boost the bottom line.

Yet it doesn’t have to be the way American democracy is played.

Even if there’s no way to stop U.S. corporations from shedding their U.S. identities and becoming foreign corporations, there’s no reason they should retain the privileges of U.S. citizenship.

By treaty, the U.S. government can’t (and shouldn’t) discriminate against foreign corporations offering as good if not better deals than American companies offer. So if Walgreen as a Swiss company continues to fill Medicaid and Medicare payments as well as, say, CVS, it’s likely that Walgreen will continue to earn almost a quarter of its $72 billion annual revenues directly from the U.S. government.

But as a foreign corporation, Walgreen should no longer have any say over the size of those payments, what drugs they cover, or how they’re administered.

In fact, Walgreen should no longer have any say about how the U.S. government does anything.

In 2010 it lobbied for and got a special provision in the Dodd-Frank Act, limiting the fees banks are allowed to charge merchants for credit-card transactions — resulting in a huge saving for Walgreen. If it becomes a Swiss citizen, the days of special provisions should be over.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Great article! …The truth about how inequality always leads to pitchforks if it isn't corrected.

Excerpt:

On June 19, 2013, Bloomberg published an article I wrote called “The Capitalist’s Case for a $15 Minimum Wage.” Forbes labeled it “Nick Hanauer’s near insane” proposal. And yet, just weeks after it was published, my friend David Rolf, a Service Employees International Union organizer, roused fast-food workers to go on strike around the country for a $15 living wage. Nearly a year later, the city of Seattle passed a $15 minimum wage. And just 350 days after my article was published, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray signed that ordinance into law. How could this happen, you ask?

It happened because we reminded the masses that they are the source of growth and prosperity, not us rich guys. We reminded them that when workers have more money, businesses have more customers—and need more employees. We reminded them that if businesses paid workers a living wage rather than poverty wages, taxpayers wouldn’t have to make up the difference. And when we got done, 74 percent of likely Seattle voters in a recent poll agreed that a $15 minimum wage was a swell idea.

AMY GOODMAN: Democracy demands debate
The Spokesman Review
She is now leading her church in a major fight to curb climate change.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is an interesting article that has been making the rounds on various online sites. I think there is merit to the idea of serious old fashion debate. We have made it politically and socially incorrect to discuss anything serious anywhere outside of official given halls and sermons or hear of it other than by a selected few outlets filtered by a predominately privately owned media and communication systems which decide which debates and individuals we are allowed to collectively hear. When we attend town halls for public discussion the space is often limited if everyone showed up and so is the time to discuss…which mainly means the selected few ask a question then shut up. The national debates have been cut down to two party ideas.

The Hobby Lobby case shows that these private companies have more rights to exercise their personal ideas through their industries than those that work for them or their customers have. We need more areas and spaces allowed for public debate. A Hobby Lobby employee when I ask about the Law suit that would directly affect her said she was informed by the company that employees couldn't discuss it.

Net neutrality, or that thing that keeps your Netflix cheap and running at an appropriate speed, is now open for public comment. Yes, in spite of the fact that
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Open comment period to the FCC will soon close. Please study up on what this is about…Failure to speak up for your own interest will result in nothing less than a total sale out of democracy and our own voices being heard throughout our nation and the world. Don't except any of the funds to fall into your pockets from this sale out.  The idea is that when your ISPs totally own and control your connections they can bleed your wealth and those that want to connect with you and line theirs with your money and overpriced services. They will also save money by not having to improve service because they pretty much have already bought those guys out. When someone asks you about the FTC overseeing the internet as an antitrust issue…..just think of the monopolies they over saw the development of and answer a big no on that…think..McDonalds, AppleBees, Walmart, Clair's,, Pic and Pay…..and think about how every town you go to and every mall has exactly the same stores almost, and restaurants and so on. Think now only 6 companies already control nearly all our media and not many more our phone services and so forth. The FCC needs to get rid of  industry insiders and revolving door employees that come like a fox to take over a hen house then go to the industry they regulated  and shaped policy for to work at high paying positions. Please study some to understand what going on then send your comments and insights or even your shock and rage to the FCC and your representatives from this links to start with.

The Supreme Court is poised to deliver its verdict in a case that weighs the religious rights of employers and the right of women to the birth control of their choice.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I think that if part of your earnings is diverted to buy into a group insurance plan that is made more affordable to employees by having an employee bargaining pool of funds….Then the insurance belongs to the insured not the employer. Does your employer own your insurance simply because they gave you no say in the bargaining or what you would like included or even which company or doctors you prefer? Good Question…Does your employer own your earnings as well? Are you paid as an employee or are you really a slave to be made to bow and obey your employer's wishes?

Big money has broken American democracy. And it will take the Internet down with it.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
Please listen to this short video and help. The next goal date is July 4th to keep Mayday.US on track to help us out. We can't sit out and wait for a few billionaire fix our lives and have a government run by the people …Those billionaire often seem to be rigging the game in their favor. We united many times before to fight for our own or other democracies and this doesn't require you to even risk your life. So many gave their life or limbs or were forced to do it for a democracy we risk losing. We risk losing it only because collectively, the rest of us stay too trusting of the wrong people, disillusioned, lazy or self-concerned about only entertaining ourselves to the point that we ignore real issues or "bad" news. It is not enough to vote twice a year between basically two pretty well pre-selected, and big money funded people. Many citizens don't bother showing up for any primaries and opportunities to participate open public opinion input and comment opportunities the public is unaware of or demand these to be made more public and some that do hear of them just don't bother to give input. Collective lack of meaningful participation means we are just handing our nation and our democracy over to people rich enough to buy votes and media to spin candidates. Do we really except people to really be willing to die to protect us when we are that careless in our own democratic participation? That is asking our soldiers to be fools for us and it isn't right.
