50% of Content Gets 8 Shares Or Less: Why Content Fails And How To Fix It | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

Why is Content Failing?

The findings could simply mean that people are producing poor content which is not worthy of sharing. Are we all really that bad? However, I suspect this is not the case. Whilst in earlier years it was possible that if you produced good content it would get found and shared, almost by virtue of its quality, this is no longer the case. There is now so much content that even producing great content is not enough. The bar is way higher.

Neil Ferree's insight:

Getting your content shared on the social web is not as easy as it used to be. Even sites like Buffer and Moz struggle to get their content shared as before. The average article only gets 8 shares?

Will Google Bring Back Google Authorship?

Will Google Bring Back Google Authorship? | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

The reasons why Authorship was killed still remain. As with any change in Google search, we'll probably never know all the reasons behind it, but the public reasons stated by John Mueller centered around Google's commitment to a "mobile first" user experience strategy. Mobile first is a recognition that search is more and more a mobile experience. Recently, Google announced that more of all searches are now done on mobile than desktop. That trend will likely never reverse.

Neil Ferree's curator insight, October 24, 2015 3:50 PM

The odds of Google Authorship coming back in its previous form is somewhere between slim and none. Personalized Results still render ones rich snippet (head shot) in the SERP's and that one element is good enough for me from a branding perspective.

When it comes to content marketing, social media is indispensable – it not only helps marketers to better understand their target audience, but also provides a whole wealth of analytics tools to measure the response to content, suggesting possible improvements in making it resonate more with the audience.
Neil Ferree's insight:

Share your content more than once.  If you think you risk your audience getting bored with what you've got to offer, think twice. Sharing the same content more than once isn't dangerous at all – it will maximize its visibility and drive more traffic. Remember, to your new followers, a piece posted 3 months ago will seem new

3 Things They’ll Never Tell You About Social Media

3 Things They’ll Never Tell You About Social Media | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

We all know the wonderful benefits of social media marketing. We’ve read the how-to posts and the tools roundups. We’ve scanned some of the 492 million “social media tips” in Google and the 602,759 social media books on Amazon. So let’s look at the other side for a minute. This post is about social media marketing’s darker side.

Neil Ferree's insight:

Dark Truth #1: People Share Without Reading

Maybe it was obvious. What people read and what people share aren’t the same thing. This was discovered by Chart Beat.

In the words of Tony Haile, Chart Beat CEO

That won’t surprise the cynics. Here’s the data. They use attention minutes vs. content length as a proxy for reading.

Visitors who read half an article are less likely to share than visitors who read nothing. An article may be read a hundred times and never shared, or shared a hundred times and never read!

Using Social Media as Your Primary (or Only) Link Building Tactic Probably Won't Work

Using Social Media as Your Primary (or Only) Link Building Tactic Probably Won't Work | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

Flywheel marketing is when you create some great content, you amplify that content via social media and your social channels, you attract visitors through that, you naturally earn links from some of those people who visit your site, and you grow your social following.

Now, the next time your audience potential is bigger and your rankings potential is also bigger, because you have more links coming to your site, and that helps all the other pages on your site. You have a bigger social audience, so now there are more people to amplify to.

Neil Ferree's insight:

You may have read that social shares is the new seo?

After reading this piece and viewing this whiteboard friday session, you will likely agree that social engagement is more important than social shares and how Google values read-time over social shares? At the end of the day, quality content is the start point for any social content marketing effort to deliver the results you seek.

That said; having a system that will increase your online visibility and brand awareness is the genesis of any SMM campaign.

Why Is Engagement with Brands Online Down Even Though More Brands Are On Social Than Ever?

Why Is Engagement with Brands Online Down Even Though More Brands Are On Social Than Ever? | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

Facebook, however, experienced an increase in brand engagement - 0.07% up to 0.2%. Still, when paired with another stat from the study - the fact that 80 percent of top global brands post regularly on the top five social sites, more than ever - paints a portrait of a social universe polluted with noise that’s garnering little response from audiences.
