Facebook Dominates News Sharing

Facebook Dominates News Sharing | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it
Our latest research shows Facebook is number one when is comes to sharing news content.
Neil Ferree's insight:
Tips For Getting Your News Shared On Facebook

Headlines matter. Whilst we personally don’t like headlines that disrespect the reader, you can see how BuzzFeed and others are driving traffic through the use of headlines. Do a BuzzSumo search to see what headlines are getting traction in terms of shares.

Embrace long form content. Our recent survey found that people like to read and share long form content. You shouldn’t assume that Facebook content needs to be short.

Use emotion. New stories which have an emotional core do particularly well.

Use video. According to NewsWhip 8 of the most popular news stories on Facebook were video based.

Optimize your page. Facebook drives a lot of traffic, potentially more than search engines. So make sure your page and your content works well with images, clear headlines and introductions.

Use related content well. The danger with traffic being driven by social side-doors is that visitors increasingly do not visit home pages and browse, they dive into and out of specific content. Thus you want to group and promote related content to help keep visitors on your site.

30 Most Important Google Ranking Factors A Beginner Should Know

30 Most Important Google Ranking Factors A Beginner Should Know | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it
A list of the most important Google ranking factors a beginner should know. If you just launched your website, here’s a treat for you.
Neil Ferree's insight:

Keyword in title tag
The title meta tag is one of the strongest relevancy signals for a search engine. The tag itself is meant to give the accurate description of the pages content. Search engines use it to display the main title of a search result. Including a keyword in it will indicate to search engine what to rank the page for. Ideally, the keyword should be placed at the start of the title tag. Pages optimized this way will rank better than those with keyword closer to the title’s tag end.

Keyword in description tag
The importance of the meta description tag today is often discussed in SEO circles. It is nonetheless still a relevancy signal. It is also crucial for gaining user clicks from search results pages. Including keyword in it makes it more relevant to a search engine and a searcher.

Keyword in H1 tag
H1 tag is yet another relevance factor, serving as a description of the pages content. In spite of ongoing discussion about its importance, its still good practice to include your keyword as H1 tag on a page.

Using keywords in the pages copy
Up until not long ago, stuffing your page with keywords was a surefire way to increase its rankings for a particular keyword. That’s not the case anymore. Using the keyword in the copy still sends a relevancy signal of what the content is about. How you place it however has changed drastically.

Length of the content
These days searchers want to be educated and won’t satisfy with basic information. Google therefore looks for authoritative and informative content to rank first. It’s common sense that the longer your content is, the greater the chance that you can cover more aspects of your topic. Don’t be shy of writing long but highly useful copy then.

Duplicate content
Not all factors can influence your rankings in a positive way. Having similar content across various pages of your site can actually hurt your rankings. Avoid duplicating content and write original copy for each page.

Image Optimization.
It’s not only text that can be optimized on a page but other media too. Images can send the search engine relevancy signals through their alt text, caption and description for instance.

Content Updates.
Google algorithm prefers freshly updated content. It does not mean that you have to edit your pages all the time. I believe that for commercial pages, such as product descriptions Google recognizes the fact that they are not as time sensitive as blog posts covering recent events. It is wise however to include some strategy to update certain types of content once every 12 months or so.

Outbound links.
Linking to authoritative pages sends trust signals to the search engine. Think of it this way, the only reason why you would send a user to another site is if you wanted them to learn more of the subject. This can be a huge trust factor for Google. Too many outbound links however can greatly diminish the page’s PageRank, hurting its search visibility. Outbound links can affect your rankings but use them in moderation.

Internal links.
Interlinking pages on your site can pass their strength between them.

Keyword in URL.
Including keyword in the URL slug (that’s the bit that appears after the “.com/“part of the URL) is said to send another relevancy signal to Google.

Microsoft announces Bing Offers Card-Linked -- enter to win $100

Microsoft announces Bing Offers Card-Linked -- enter to win $100 | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

Google is a great search engine, but so is Bing. Many people dismiss Microsoft's offering without even trying it. This is a shame, as people do not know what they are missing.

While its search-results are relevant and appropriate, there is so much more. Google is simplistic in its design, but Microsoft creates a world of color, images and discovery to bring life to the overall experience.

There are benefits to both design choices and it is a personal preference, but I prefer beauty over a white page with a Google logo.

Neil Ferree's insight:

As the semantic web and conversational search becomes more common and more people ask Siri or talk to Google (even though) Apple now uses Bing for search, the closer your content matches the long tail queries your customers are asking, the better your conversions will be.

#1: Identify Business Goals
#2: Set Marketing Objectives
#3: Identify Ideal Customers
#4: Research Competition
#5: Choose Channels and Tactics
#6: Create a Content Strategy

5 Characteristics Of High Converting Headlines

5 Characteristics Of High Converting Headlines | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

The information you’re about to read is very powerful, but I need to offer two disclaimers.

  • All these techniques don’t work all the time in every situation. Nonetheless, the data does point to these characteristics as being effective most of the time.
  • Different techniques work better for different audiences. Studies may say one thing, but your mileage may vary. You know your audience best.
Neil Ferree's insight:

The better your headline, the better your marketing.

Use these five characteristics to improve your conversion rates. Here’s what works:

  • Use numbers (odd numbers work best)
  • Use 5-9 words if people are familiar 16-18 if they’re not
  • Use negative words, or at least few positive superlatives
  • Use a two-part model
  • Be very, very clear

I chose to Scoop this article from Neil Patel since he's one of the most respected and successful online marketers I know.

The interesting thing was how the headline Neil used in this piece didn't score well when I tested it via AMI headline analyzer?

I made a minor tweak to get a score of 62% but left the original headline in tact. I only edited the image.
