What is a Personalized Search?

A personalized search happens anytime a user performs a search when logged into a Google property such as Gmail, YouTube, Google Analytics, Google Play, etc.  In an effort to provide the most relevant results to searchers, Google may take into account a user’s search history, location, connections on Google+, and may also incorporate data from other Google services including Calendar and Gmail.

Is Google+ still worth your time?

Neil Ferree's insight:

Five Reasons Google+ Is Still Worth Using

Here are the top five reasons you might keep using Google+.

  1. Your target audience (eg., IT, self-employed, writers, Internet marketers) actively uses Google+.
  2. You're a freelance writer, an editor, or a journalist who uses Google+ to showcase your portfolio.
  3. Google+ isn't going anywhere (even without Authorship), so it's worth keeping up with just in case it takes off.

5 Characteristics Of High Converting Headlines

5 Characteristics Of High Converting Headlines | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it

The information you’re about to read is very powerful, but I need to offer two disclaimers.

  • All these techniques don’t work all the time in every situation. Nonetheless, the data does point to these characteristics as being effective most of the time.
  • Different techniques work better for different audiences. Studies may say one thing, but your mileage may vary. You know your audience best.
Neil Ferree's insight:

The better your headline, the better your marketing.

Use these five characteristics to improve your conversion rates. Here’s what works:

  • Use numbers (odd numbers work best)
  • Use 5-9 words if people are familiar 16-18 if they’re not
  • Use negative words, or at least few positive superlatives
  • Use a two-part model
  • Be very, very clear

I chose to Scoop this article from Neil Patel since he's one of the most respected and successful online marketers I know.

The interesting thing was how the headline Neil used in this piece didn't score well when I tested it via AMI headline analyzer?

I made a minor tweak to get a score of 62% but left the original headline in tact. I only edited the image.

Google Removes Authorship Photos and Google+ Circle Counts From Search Results

Google Removes Authorship Photos and Google+ Circle Counts From Search Results | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it
Google's getting rid of author profile pictures and Google+ circle counts in search results. Here's what you need to know.
Neil Ferree's insight:

So you'll still have your name in search results, and your name will be linked to your Google+ profile, but your photo and social following will be hidden ... which, let's be honest, was one of the main reasons we all set it up anyway.

The results indicate users are drawn to results with Google Authorship pictures even if they're below the fold. And see that little click icon? It means the user ultimately chose that result

I for one would like to see Google reverse its decision to remove our profile Head-shot and Circle Count Rich Snippets from the SERP's.

How to Use Google+ for Social Media Contests

How to Use Google+ for Social Media Contests | Google Plus and Social SEO | Scoop.it
Here's how three brands leverage Google+ as a core component of their social contest strategy and the keys to their success.
Neil Ferree's insight:

Running contests, giveaways, promotional offers, etc., has become a staple part of online strategy for business owners and marketers.

They’re used to stimulate engagement, build community, encourage user-generated content, create a unique experience and increase brand awareness.

First let’s look at the rules.

Unfortunately, the Google+ platform has specific restrictions when it comes to hosting contests.

In fact, Google+’s Contests and Promotions Policy clearly states:

“You may not run contests, sweepstakes, or other such promotions (“Promotion”) directly on Google+ or in a manner that requires use of G+ features or functionality.”

For many people, that’s a show-stopper right there.

The good news is that it’s possible to leverage contests to engage your community on Google+ without violating their contest and promotions policy. The second line of their policy is the most important to pay attention to:

“You may display a link on Google+ to a separate site where your Promotion is hosted so long as you (and not Google) are solely responsible for your Promotion and for compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations in the jurisdiction(s) where your Promotion is offered or promoted.”
