Cybercriminals are exploiting users of social networking sites

Cybercriminals are exploiting users of social networking sites | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it

SOCIAL MEDIA USERS BEWARE

In April, cybercriminals were seen exploiting users of major social networking sites in order to spread malware and spam surveys, according to GFI Software.

"In the same way that the popularity of social networking sites makes them a widely accepted tool for businesses to reach customers and elevate brand awareness, it also appeals to cybercriminals seeking a large pool of captive users to be targeted for malware and spam attacks,” said Christopher Boyd, senior threat researcher at GFI Software.

“Established sites like Facebook and Twitter have long been a breeding ground for new cyber-attacks, but now we are seeing scammers taking an interest in the popularity of newer sites like Pinterest in order to catch victims off guard and trick them into clicking on something they shouldn’t,” Boyd added.

Victoria’s Secret is too secret on Pinterest. | LL Social

Victoria’s Secret is too secret on Pinterest. | LL Social | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it
A beach wrap by Victoria's Secret is one the most pinned images on Pinterest this year. Victoria's Secret got minimal traffic since the viral image wasn't actually on their site.

Lost Traffic

If Victoria’s Secret would have taken the time to put together the images they paid to have taken and placed them one after another in a vertical manner, a number of people would have pinned it, and I believe it would have still gone viral.

Not too late for Victoria’s Secret and other businesses to take advantage.

By being on Pinterest, they can be the ones who introduce apparel to their audience, and thus control where the links go.

The case of this viral pin also show that brands need to at least monitor Pinterest. Monitoring lets businesses learn what products are popular, but also the image format that people like best.

All business interested in Pinterest should consider providing pictures that are photo booth style. Multiple images can tell a story, and when they are arranged vertically, they command more space in people’s feeds. Something to consider the next time you are putting together images of products or even just images to go with a blog post.

Since Google launched their Penguin update on April 24th, millions of websites have been falling down the rankings like losing soldiers in the battlefield! Google has been cracking down on "spammy" websites like never before.

This update has indeed been very effective at knocking down spam sites, but many believe that some legit sites have also wrongfully been hit and have voiced their opinions on Google's forums and social media outlets. Google's Search Quality team listened and has set up a form that webmasters can use to notify Google that the Penguin has been unfair to them.

If you are feeling bad while reading this because you do remember using some slightly shady link building techniques in the past, don't worry, it's never too late to repent.

Now is the time to "whiten your hat" and re-think your SEO strategy. Here are some valuable link building tips that will help you not only survive the Penguin update, but safely improve your rankings for the long term.

For the third consecutive year, CMO.com have released their CMO’s (Chief Marketing Officer’s) Guide To The Social Landscape.

Five new members have made the roster this year, including Pinterest and Google+.

The infographic is presented below in full. However, if you visit the CMO website the visual can be sorted by customer communication, brand exposure, site traffic and SEO. Somewhat surprisingly, CMO rated Google+ as the top social network in three of these categories, with Twitter securing the number one spot in site traffic.*

Still, this is a useful one-stop summary of the pros and cons of the different social networks, and a fantastic resource for both brands and marketers.
