The Periodic Table of WordPress Plugins

The Periodic Table of WordPress Plugins | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it
Over 23000 WordPress plugins have been contributed to the WordPress.org Plugin Directory. This table showcases the 108 most popular WordPress plugins, ranked by the number of downloads.
Mike Macey's insight:

Have you ever learned about a new WordPress plugin and just had to find it for your blog?  Were you overwhelmed with the additional options for similar  plugins and descriptions?  I waste a lot of time looking at all the goodies and playing clickety-click to see if there might be a better plugin.

You research # of downloads, # of versions, last update, and compatibility with your current WordPress version.  Or, you go the WordPress Plugin Directory and learn that Plugins can extend your WordPress to do almost anything you can imagine. In the directory you can find, download, rate, and comment on all the best plugins the WordPress community has to offer: 24,677 plugins, 446,931,939 downloads, and counting.  You can also find 'Featured Plugins' to include unique but lesser downloaded options.

If you are a newbie or basic WordPress user, I recommend starting with the top 10 most downloaded plugins.  If you need more features, look through The Periodic Table of WordPress Plugins that feature the top 108.

10 most downloaded WordPress plugins

  1.     Askimet
  2.     All in One SEO Pack
  3.     Contact Form 7
  4.     Google XML Sitemaps
  5.     NextGEN Gallery
  6.     WP Super Cache
  7.     Google Analytics for WordPress

What Facebook's Graph Search Means for Businesses

What Facebook's Graph Search Means for Businesses | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it
Even though it's currently in beta for English audiences only, we'll explain what Graph Search means for small businesses and brands.
Mike Macey's insight:

Graph Search is not Google, Bing, or Yahoo.  Graph Search is the powerful new Facebook search to help members explore connections between people, places, and things as well as make discoveries from within Facebook.

With more than 1 billion people on the social network, you can conduct a lot of market research for marketing and particularly Facebook ads.

If you are an online, retail, or network marketer selling healthy food products, supplements, or glueten free cookbooks, you could search for 'Friends who like Whole Foods."  then friends of friends who like Whole Foods and then friends of friends of friends who like Whole Foods.  drill down your search with the many sorts available within Graph Searcvh and then test, test, test.  Target marketing will improve every ad campaign.

Facebook is only one piece of your marketing funnel but requires the same business best practices approach as all platforms.  Learning about custom apps/tabs, landing pages, mobile, and tracking require time and effort.

Mike Macey's insight:

Mobile has surpassed desktop for search.  Is your competitor using video?  It is reported that YouTube (owned by Google) is ranked #2 is search and #3 most visited.

When you upload a video on YouTube, the service produces a transcript.  Did you know you can edit the transcript to add keywords that match blog post and together they can increase postential for higher ranking on Google search?

These are great tools to assist in building your brand.  Creating videos and keyword text on the fly is as important as knowing how to fill out a deposit slip on the way to the bank.  It's your business.

Facebook page admins beware! What you CANNOT do on Facebook | MarketingGum.com | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it
If you don't want your page deleted along with losing all your fans, you need to know the rules. Find out the most often broken Facebook rules so your page isn't next...
Mike Macey's insight:

Did you hear about Velvet Burger? They are one of the most recent companies to have their Facebook page deleted for breaking the rules. They waved ‘bye bye’ to almost 10,000 fans in the process. You can read their message to their customers in this blog post from MarketingGum.

I attempt to share this information with clients, prospects, and in various social media groups and particularly Facebook groups.  Few people believe the Facebook Police will ever pay attention to their site.

Many of the same rules apply to Personal Profiles too.  The biggest TOS (terms of service) violation is using and promoting business in a Personal Profile.  this violation is also a reason many friends exclude violator's post from reaching their newsfeed this negating content and most likely nothing more than blatant advertising.

What Makes Vine So Hot?

What Makes Vine So Hot? | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it

It's the kind of moment that comes rarely, but tech journalists live for it: a service is launched with little fanfare and receives a sudden, energetic burst of genuine buzz.

Mike Macey's insight:

It's all iPhone right now but Android and Window apps are coming.

I've seen a lot of goofy 6 second video published with Vine and why not?  It's new, creative, and fun.  But serious is just around the corner.

I'll go ahead and coin the phrase . . . "Vintage Vine" will definitely look and feel much different a year from now.  Video Professionals, advertsing agencies, and intuitive marketers are already busy marking up their picture boards.

I believe Vine with be the new "6 second Pinterest." -- Mike Macey, Influencer, ThinkUp New Media.

7 Content Curation Tips for Personal Branding Success

7 Content Curation Tips for Personal Branding Success | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it

Roger Parker shares 7 simple content curation tips for personal branding success.

7 tips for content curation done right

I’ve been studying this series since it began; here are some of the lessons and tips that set it apart from the everyday.

1. Purposeful. The essence of successful project lies in its description and purpose statement. In this case, the series is described as, “a weekly collection of cool discoveries from around the Web.” Most of the time, it’s mission is described as, “Most times the goal is to get you thinking differently about communication, collaboration, culture, and life in general.“

2. Relevance. People don’t read high-tech blogs for comic relief, however. For a blog, or a business, to survive, it has to value to customers and readers in terms of practical assistance, entertainment, or inspiration. This calls for a level of curation that goes beyond checking out the most popular blogs on the Internet. It requires an intimate understanding of your intended reader’s interests and values combined with a bloodhound’s tenacity following a clue.

3. Surprise. Given the wealth of daily compiled content curation publications on the Internet, serendipity–the ability to search out and discover previous unknown resources–becomes more and more essential. If your compilations merely echo the information that’s available elsewhere, the value of your brand quickly declines. The game is over when your recommendations fail to be pleasant discoveries. (I find these are almost always fresh discoveries on topics I do not normally follow–but am glad I’ve been introduced to.)

4. Annotation. The care you take in introducing and “selling the value” of the resources you’re recommending plays a big role in the success of your content curation efforts. You have to provide a context that relates the resource you’re recommending to your readers interests in as concise and entertaining a way as possible.

5. Engaging. Engagement, as practiced in the Mindjet blog’s Super Fun Friday Link Time takes forms. One is the over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek title, which promises a lighthearted end-of-the-week approach. A second approach is hinted at by the second part of the feature’s mission statement, that follows the “Most of the time” sentence above. The second sentence reads, just 4 words, reads; “Other times, LOLCAT ATTACK!” The sentence engages because promise to provoke.

6. Scarcity. Small, but crucial point; once a week is the perfect frequency for curated content. The Super Happy Fun Friday Link Time would quickly lose its appeal the more days of the week it appeared. As it is, the Friday-only schedule not only provides enough time to search out on-target, undiscovered relevant posts, it avoids reader burnout while providing a welcome change from the other daily blog post topics.

7. Consistency. The other side of scarcity, of course, is consistency. Having made a commitment to a fresh feature each Friday, it soon becomes a habit for readers who look forward to it each week…and will probably check back the next week if they were traveling or busy over the weekend.

Dennis's AHA! Moment on Scoop.it

Dennis's AHA! Moment on Scoop.it | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it

Dennis's original goal when joining Scoop.it was to create a resource for his audience. He initially began using Scoop.it to "re-purpose years of blog content and … share his extensive reading lists." In doing so, he learned that Scoop.it could actually serve as his own social media dashboard, and was "immediately impressed" with the ability he had on Scoop.it to manage so many media outlets.

With this power, Dennis was able to begin curating content on the major themes of his expertise: writing, information fluency, e-learning, and online teaching. While creating these reading lists and collections of his previously published blog content, though, Dennis realized that his readers weren't the only ones benefitting from his curation. He knew that Scoop.it would be a great tool to organize and share his lists, but what he didn't exact was that there would be more people out there interested in what he was posting!

After using Scoop.it for some time, he has found that he can continue to build significant audiences for his topics. He has used Scoop.it as a tool to publish to three different Facebook pages, a WordPress blog, two Tumblr blogs, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, and Stumbleupon.

By sharing his content to all of these different channels from the same place, Dennis is able to save time and expand his reach. He has become an increasingly influential figure in Information Fluency and E-Learning and continues to learn more about these topics each day as he curates and shares new information for his readers.

Mobile Mind Shift

Mobile Mind Shift | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it
Mike Macey's insight:

Last week was Forrester’s Forum for Marketing Leaders with the theme “Create Brand Advantage with Perpetually Connected Customers.” The bulk of the presentations from Forrester analysts and marketing executives dealt with how customer decision-making has changed and how marketers should be responding to those changes. This is one of six lessons from the event in case you weren’t there.

The Mobile Mind Shift: Analyst Josh Bernoff unveiled new research on the importance of smartphones in the daily lives and the decision journeys of today’s customers. The key insight was “the expectation that any desired information or service is available, on any appropriate device, in context, at a person’s moment of need.”

Five segments of people were presented based on how actively they use mobile devices:

  1. dabblers
  2. roamers
  3. adapters
  4. immersers
  5. perpetuals

The last three segments represent only 22% of U.S. online consumers today but can be a more significant share of some companies’ business: 45% in the case of E*Trade. Lesson: Expectations of smartphone users are increasing faster than most brands’ responses to those expectations.

Advertising Relearned for Mobile #mobile

Advertising Relearned for Mobile #mobile | All-in-One Social Media News | Scoop.it

Say you are in a strange city and need a hotel for the night. You pull out your phone, search for hotels on Google and see a nearby one listed at the top of the rankings, with a little phone icon that says, “Call.” You tap it, reach the hotel and ask for a room.

And just like that, Google made money. That icon was a so-called click-to-call ad, and the hotel paid Google for it when you called.

As more of us have access to the Internet and apps through our cellphones and tablets, advertisers are looking for new ways to reach us there.

Some mobile ads remain just miniature versions of ads on Web sites, an echo of the early days of the Internet, when advertisers essentially slapped print ads online. But increasingly, advertisers are tailoring ads to phones by taking advantage of elements like their ability to track location, make a call, show maps with directions and add calendar alerts.

The stakes are significant for an industry that is still finding its way in the mobile world. Advertisers will spend a relatively small amount of money on ads on phones and tablets this year — $2.6 billion, according to eMarketer, less than 2 percent of the amount they will spend over all. Yet that is more than triple what they spent in 2010.

“An ever-growing percentage of our ad buy is mobile because that’s where the consumer is,” said Chris McCann, president of 1-800-Flowers.com, which has run mobile ads urging people to call or walk into a nearby store. “It’s the future for us.”

Coming up with ads that exploit the smaller mobile screen requires inventiveness from many parties — advertisers; digital publishers like Google, Apple and Facebook that sell ad space; and mobile ad networks like Millennial Media.

The news says a lot about how we're using the social network — on the go but also from our couches while watching TV or just lounging. But it also bodes well for Facebook, whose mobile component has been considered a weakness in terms of drawing advertisers.
