Making a lot of sense

Leo J. Bogee III's curator insight, July 17, 2013 9:38 AM

This kind of makes sense now that I am thinking about it. In Minneapolis I was working with someone who originally didn't have a very good web presense but he did have quite of few reviews via Yelp, YP and google+ page.   His Industry was ultra competitive with literally 4 other similiar businesses 700 -1000 feet away from his.  He showed up #3 or "C"  on the map and it would leave me scratching my head on how?   Good insight on Google+ Local Centroid.

The 10 Most Popular Brands Online

The 10 Most Popular Brands Online | Google Plus Business Pages | Scoop.it
Google was the most popular brand online in 2014, ranking first for the second year in a row, according to a recent report from Infegy.

The report was based on data from billions of online conversations that occurred last year about 800 top brands. The top 50 brands were then ranked based on a combination of popularity (volume of conversations) and sentiment (how positive the conversations were).

Google claimed the top spot thanks to the high volume of conversations about the brand (718 million posts) as well as the generally positive sentiment of those interactions (69% were positive). Twitter ranked second, followed by Facebook.

Online chatter about Apple (No. 4) spiked in September and October, during the launch of the iPhone 6. However, total conversations about the brand were down 32% from 2013.

State of Search Conference Dallas Texas 2014

State of Search Conference Dallas Texas 2014 | Google Plus Business Pages | Scoop.it

Does Google use click-through rate as a ranking signal? If users are clicking and sticking on some results, and bouncing back to the search results on others, that could be a valuable quality signal for them to use in the ranking algorithm.

Some recent tests have shown interesting (and instant) ranking boosts from click activity. Not satisfied with the results of a handful of tests, Darren has set out to test out of: clicks on website links, clicks on Google+ page links, driving directions, and branded search. He’ll describe the tests, the results, and any new insights.

  • The ranking fluctuations since the Pigeon update are deliberate.
  • Weekly or monthly rank tracking data is useless. Need to track daily.

Proven inbound marketing tactics and resources that will help your startup acquiring customers in a way that differentiates you from the crowd..
Neil Ferree's insight:

CONTENT MARKETING
The absolute best tactic for acquiring new customers as a cash-poor startup is utilizing the power of content marketing. Although the buzz around this term is at an all-time high, the results for those businesses that do it well speak for themselves.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
The great part about creating practical, useful content is that all of those shares and links will help you start to naturally rank in search engines. And as you know, organic search results are a great place for potential customers to find you.

EMAIL MARKETING
Do you know what smart entrepreneurs do with the traffic they receive from inbound marketing content and SEO? They build an email list. Outside of direct sales, there is no better business outcome attached to first-time visitors than when they subscribe to receive newsletters and email updates from you.

COPYWRITING
When a design and product-focused blog like Basecamp tells you to go hug your copywriter, you just know that words still rule the web. Choosing the right words is an important part of how your business sells online, so invest a little time in learning about powerful wordsmithing.

CONVERSION RATE OPTIMIZATION
When your website starts getting traffic, it’s time to start doing something with it! The fact is, improving certain elements of your site can help you increase leads and sales with the traffic that you already have.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
There is a lot of ongoing hype surrounding social media marketing. The truth is that social media isn’t all that useful on its own … but it is the gasoline that fires and spreads your online content.

ANALYTICS
Building an online business without utilizing analytics is like driving with your eyes closed. If you don’t know what’s working (or what’s not!), where people are visiting, and how your pages are performing, then you’re headed toward failure.

Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, October 17, 2014 12:08 PM

It's been a while now that SEO experts such as Lee Odden or Rand Fishkin have commented on the algorithm changes of Google that completely changed SEO from an obscure technical back linking technique to a much more human ability to produce content humans enjoy and like to share.

This post gives a number of actionable tips on how to implement a successful SEO strategy in 2014.

But beyond the list of tips, SEO today boils down mostly to publishing content that your targeted audience will enjoy: because it educates, it entertains them, it informs them, etc...

And therefore the key to success is being consistent which - as the above chart shows - is the main challenge today: producing a constant stream of high quality content is not just tough, it's impossible. Even major media groups have given up on this as they got beaten by the Huffington Post (which this post is interestingly from), BuzzFeed and Upworthy. Mixing your own content with curated content however does not only makes this possible but also makes your entire site and publishing efforts more credible

Ken Dickens's curator insight, October 20, 2014 3:37 PM

Standard On-Page SEO Practices still apply because this is the entry point for Google to know what a page is about and index it correctly.  But, creating great content is what it is all about.  -Ken
