Hyper-Local Landing Pages: the Yellow Brick Road for Local Search

Hyper-Local Landing Pages: the Yellow Brick Road for Local Search | Google Places Optimization & Local SEO News | Scoop.it

Especially in large metro areas, longer tale/less competitive local key phrases could include neighborhoods, landmarks or regions. So landing pages for all those local variations helps you cast a wider net for your clients AND could be an additional service you offer them.

Think of it as the "hyper-local long tail" and follow that yellow brick road!

As I often do, I'm taking good SEO info and putting a Local SEO spin on it. Below is a great infographic which tells the tale, BUT I want to focus on a comment that's made in the intro.

I know lots of Local SEO consultants that are struggling to make a profit. My comment above and the infographic below, is part of the reason. See posts in our Consultant's Corner for help and insights about growing your Local SEO consulting business.

Google Shakeup: Mapping & Commerce Unit Splits, Jeff Huber Moves On | Google Places Optimization & Local SEO News | Scoop.it

WHERE Does this Leave Google+ Local?

There has just been a big re-organization at Google. Sources say it's the most significant management reorganization since Google co-founder Larry Page became chief exec in 2011.

Some of the articles mention Maps & Local Search but no one specifically mentions Google+ Local? Some make reference to the maps/commerce unit as being in disarray and having problems.

I asked Google for a comment. Stay tuned...

WARNING: Google+ Local Category KW Spam & Conflicting Guidelines

WARNING: Google+ Local Category KW Spam & Conflicting Guidelines | Google Places Optimization & Local SEO News | Scoop.it

If you deal with Google+ Local you know getting categories right is a big deal when it comes to ranking!

Once again Google Map Maker vs Places guidelines conflict or at least are not in alignment. Turns out the MM guidelines or at least the unwritten rules that "power mappers" and reviewers are privately told by Google are MUCH stricter than what Places guidelines allow.

REMEMBER if a Googler or Mapper (or even a bot) gets eyes on a listing,
they MAY edit or delete it based on MM rules - not Places guidelines!

Bunch of local category guideline warnings inside.

Critical 4 Local - Author Rank, Publisher & Author Markup - What you NEED to Know | Google Places Optimization & Local SEO News | Scoop.it

If you care about where the future of search is heading, read every link in this post to get clarity on these issues.

1st up a VERY IMPORTANT quote from Eric Schmidt, the Executive Chairman of Google. Then below that some important links from Mike Blumenthal that directly relate to local and how all this markup stuff works and why it's so very important to start using it.

Neil Ferree's curator insight, February 6, 12:41 PM

Author Rank is more important than anything right now. Google CEO implies as such. You need your http://bit.ly/RichSnippet in place now so the content your create + curate + syndicate must be connected to your rel=author credentials so your Authorship rating improves.

10 Simple Things SMB Websites Need To Fix Before SEO

10 Simple Things SMB Websites Need To Fix Before SEO | Google Places Optimization & Local SEO News | Scoop.it

When speaking with SMBs and companies that sell marketing services to SMBs, I hear over and over again how a business wants to rank #1 for important local keywords.

Then, I look at their website and have visions of money being poured down the drain, horses being led to water sans drinking, Sisyphus rolling a boulder up that damn hill, and a variety of other cliches.

Linda Buquet :: Catalyst eMarketing's insight:

See my important comment about many SMB sites having their # listed in the wrong format which can cause problems.

Paul Gregg's comment, January 28, 9:55 PM
In my opinion smb should be focused less on rankings and more on revenues and key performance indicators that are tied to site objectives.

We have an issue right now that we are trying tirelessly to resolve...me and an owner have been locked out of his google+ account- we keep getting an error 500 and no one seems to know the answer. The page is visible on the web...says I am the manager..but when I switch over to it, it goes to the error. Any suggestions besides the obvious that we have l already tried, such as different browsers, sign in/out, clear cache would be so helpful!
Cora Dugan's curator insight, March 19, 6:56 PM

We are seeing this error on our Google+ page. It started to happen when we tried to verify the business in "Places". We have not resolved this issue as of yet. We can see the page, just that we cannot post from it.

8 Reasons Local SEO is Incredibly Complicated & Difficult

You have to admit - Local Search is just plain hard AND complicated!

In a previous life I demonstrated and sold high end equipment like LASERS to Dentists. This was back when they 1st came out - before anyone knew what they were or how they worked.

But I've never done anything as complicated as Google+ Local! Here are 8 reasons local is so dang hard!

Why does Google make such great products and then make the Google+ manual into a book.

Cindy Speaker's curator insight, March 13, 8:32 PM

SEO is not my thing, but I know enough to know how important it is that you entrust your SEO to top notch people that know what they are doing.  Otherwise you could doom your brand in the eyes of Google.  There is no quick fix to SEO.  Be patient and only work with top experts.

Highly Important: Google Map Maker Guidelines & Resources

Highly Important: Google Map Maker Guidelines & Resources | Google Places Optimization & Local SEO News | Scoop.it

Places guidelines are often very vague. Some corresponding MM are very strict and explicit. IMPORTANT to know the MM rules.IF a listing for any reason ends up going to the MM team or a Googler on the maps side of the house, evals or edits your listing, they could very well be editing per the MM guidelines, not the Places guidelines. Your listing could be edited OR deleted if it does not comply with the MM rules.

Wowser, Google is just hitting it out of the park with positive changes this week. Tons of major updates, upgrades, new features and improvements you NEED to know about inside.

Much of this has been in the works on the back end for many months and I'm so happy to now be able to share the news.

Ed Burckhardt's curator insight, February 3, 9:36 AM

About time! I was beginning to wonder if Google had just abandoned us and left us at the mercy of Yelp and others. I subscribe to the daily digest from the Google Product Forums. I get it 4 or 5 per day, and to read all the complaints, I was just about to unsubscribe from it. Now, thanks to your post Linda, I can see a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. And this time, it doesn't seem to be the Yelp train coming. I really hope they also improve the verification process, when doing updates to the profiles, soon. I have some clients, that we helped to update their information, several months ago, and still waiting. Thank you Linda, as usual, you are on top with all the latest in Local Search. Keep up the good work, we need you!
