Nine Companies That Destroyed Their Largest Competitors

Nine Companies That Destroyed Their Largest Competitors | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

It is hard to believe that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), at any point, was not the undisputed leader in the search world, let alone actually just a small part of the market. In the early days of the Internet, search engines like Lycos, Excite, AskJeeves, and others competed for pieces of the pie. By the end of the 20th century, however, Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO) emerged as the leader, surviving the dot-com bubble that dragged the smaller companies under. Yahoo! then purchased most of these for next to nothing. In 2000, the site had 56% of search engine referrals, six times times its closest competitor. Google had roughly 1% of the market in June of that year. In 2001, Yahoo! began using Google’s search algorithm

Google May Start Serving All Results On One Page: Good for SEO?

Google May Start Serving All Results On One Page: Good for SEO? | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it
Last month we looked at video that Alex Chitu at Google Operating System shared, showing that Google was testing a new design concept for its search results...

In the video, you can see that the results pages still end with the pagination that matches the default Google user experience of today. You still have to click to go to the next page if you wish to see more results. However, we speculated at the time that this could open up the door to infinite scrolling in web search results, as Google Image Search, which already has this feature, has a similar design concept.

Google bets on Africa as the next internet hotspot | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

To global search giant, Google, Africa is the next Internet hotspot. Globally, there are 94 domains registered per 10 000 users. However, in Africa, there is only one domain per 10 000 users. As such, there is tremendous potential for growth on the continent in the web space.

Orange and Google partner to speed up the spread of innovative SMS-based services in Africa

Orange and Google partner to speed up the spread of innovative SMS-based services in Africa | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

Orange and Google today announced a strategic partnership that will leverage Orange’s SMS platform to bring Google’s services to African customers. This agreement marks an important step forward that will facilitate access to the growing mobile internet market in Africa. Indeed, at the end of 2010, only 1.4% of the population in Africa and Middle East had access to broadband services, compared to 62.5% for mobile services.

With a total customer base of around 60 million customers across the continent, Orange is one of the most powerful mobile operators in Africa and the Middle East today. Innovations such as Orange Money have already demonstrated that mobile technology can improve the lives of African customers and help businesses grow.

Through the development of SMS-based services that operate on all mobile networks (including GSM), Orange and Google will extend the reach of a wide range of internet services that were previously limited to smartphone and broadband users (through 3G, CDMA or WiMax networks) to all Orange mobile customers. Back in March of last year, we noted that Google Buzz, Google's shiny new social network at the time, was getting smoked in terms of referral traffic sent our way, by a dead man, FriendFeed.

New Infographic: The Brandsphere by Brian Solis and JESS3 | Brian Solis | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

In discussions about new media, you will often hear the division of media opportunities as Paid, Owned, and Earned media (P.O.E.M.). Over the years, I’ve studied the various categorization of media from a few perspectives, that of content creation, how social networks cater to consumption and sharing, and also how media opportunities are packaged and sold by each network. I believe media is not limited to three groups, but instead categorized into five key segments: Paid, Promoted, Owned, Shared, and Earned. To visualize the model that reflects the state of new media, I once again partnered with my good friends at JESS3. The result…The Brandsphere.

Social networks and channels present brands with a broad array of media opportunities to engage customers and those who influence them. Each channel offers a unique formula for engagement where brands become stories and people become storytellers. Using a transmedia approach, the brand story can connect with customers differently across each medium, creating a deeper, more enriching experience. Transmedia storytelling doesn’t follow the traditional rules of publishing; it caters to customers where they connect and folds them into the narrative.....

Google Panda update in Italy and Spain – Winners and Losers

Google Panda update in Italy and Spain – Winners and Losers | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

In Italy and Spain too, low-quality content has not been spared by Google’s Panda update.

After already announcing the winners and losers in the USA, UK, Germany, France and Austria, the lists for two other major European countries are now available.

Just as before, on the basis of absolute and percentage values we are demonstrating which domains in these countries have achieved gains and losses in terms of their visibility in the Google search results.

This is therefore not the same thing as a rise or drop in traffic as I explained in this blog post.

Google Earth imagery update helps uncover part of Scotland’s hidden heritage

Google Earth imagery update helps uncover part of Scotland’s hidden heritage | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

The Google Earth and Google Maps team published an imagery update earlier today which, as usual, contains some really interesting sites. Ireland is not featured is this update, but large parts of Scotland and England, among others, are. In recent years Google Earth has become an increasingly invaluable service that allows heritage enthusiasts to remotely explore sites of historic interest or significance; and Scotland is full of them. With a history famed in martial story, Scotland has many great castles and abbeys, examples of Iron Age settlements and Norse invasion.
