The newest entry to the social network major leagues is taking a page from Twitter’s handbook, letting third-party application developers do all of the heavy lifting. But instead of letting these new feature coalesce into full-blown clients that render the first-party experience obsolete, these improvements are being channeled into extensions for Google’s Chrome browser.

Fred Wilson asks: Google+ A service built for you? Or for Google? | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

I agree with Eric that Google+ is in part an identity service. But "primarily an identity service?" That's notable. Particularly in the context of what he said after that. "if they're going to build future products that leverage that information."

It begs the question of whom Google built this service for? You or them. And the answer to why you need to use your real name in the service is because they need you to. Well at least we got that out there and can deal with it.

Social media is an opportunity. It is also a challenge. It’s often said that social media is perhaps one of the most powerful modern age business tools. With power comes responsibility and social media is no exception to that rule. From a business perspective, social media opens up a new world of opportunities and it’s exciting as well as crucial to keep pace with the latest changes on the social media front.

I’m often asked about what I consider as the biggest social media challenges that businesses need to overcome. I often iterate that social media isn’t a shortcut to success and using social media for business gains is no walk in the park. There are challenges which need to be dealt with and opportunities which need to be capitalized upon. In my opinion, businesses need to overcome the following 7 social media challenges to make the most of this opportunity...

7 Ways For Marketers To Maximize Google+

7 Ways For Marketers To Maximize Google+ | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

So you’re still not on Google+? Or maybe you’ve stuck your toe in the water but holding back to make sure G+ is the real thing.

Better get busy. Google’s already grown to 25 million plus users in only a few weeks, and they could be opening the floodgates to brands soon-Ford is already test-driving its business page. No one knows, but I believe with its financial muscle and market power Google+ will emerge as the leading social platform for business once it fully integrates is search and other tools (Gmail, Chrome, etc).

So you need to hedge your bets by getting involved in G+. But that doesn’t mean you need to throw all your eggs in this basket, or spend all your waking hours on G+. There are ways you can manage your time and use G+ selectively and strategically.

Below are seven examples of maximizing Google+ (efficiently), based on my last few weeks of working on the new platform...

Chatty robots go viral on YouTube

Lipson asked Ph.D. students Igor Labutov and Jason Yosinski to set up the conversation as a demo for his class on artificial intelligence. They chose a Web-based chatbot (a computer program designed to simulate human conversation) called Cleverbot. Anyone can go to http://cleverbot.com and carry on a typed conversation with the robot. The students added text-to-speech capability and computer-generated faces, set two laptops side-by-side on a table and connected them to Cleverbot, seeding the conversation with a simple "Hi." They videotaped part of the conversation and posted it on YouTube. As of Aug. 31, it had more than a million hits.

Sites with Twitter "tweet" button 7X more likely to have content shared

Sites with Twitter "tweet" button 7X more likely to have content shared | "#Google+, +1, Facebook, Twitter, Scoop, Foursquare, Empire Avenue, Klout and more" | Scoop.it

'In July, BrightEdge reported that just 51 percent of the world's top 10,000 sites included a Twitter or a Facebook link on the site's front page. A month later, that number has increased to 53.6 percent, the company found.

The real news, however, was the increased reach that placing a Twitter "tweet" button helped a site achieve: an average of 27 mentions online for those sites with a button, and an average of 4 mentions for those without it.'
