7 Questions To Ask Kids To Encourage Empathy

7 Questions To Ask Kids To Encourage Empathy | Good News worth Sharing | Scoop.it

These smart ideas for encouraging children to be more empathetic are from Start Empathy, a new education initiative created by the nonprofit Ashoka. The goal is to get kids and adults thinking about the topic—key for raising kids who understand others’ feelings and perspectives, and key for raising kids who care. These seven questions will help get even the most me-centric kid (and what kid isn’t?!) thinking about other people.

How does that make you feel?...

Do you know at times I’ve also felt scared?...

How would that make your [brother/sister/friend] feel?...

What do you think [a particular character] felt?...

Why do you thinkhe/she made those choices?...

What emotion is that?...

If you had superpowers, how would you use them to help...

What were you like when you were nine years old?...

Empathy Becomes a Revolutionary Force for Change

Empathy Becomes a Revolutionary Force for Change | Good News worth Sharing | Scoop.it

Empathy is about to hit the big time. The view that we are essentially self-interested creatures is being overturned by evidence that we are also homo empathicus, wired for empathy, social co-operation and mutual aid. Neuroscientists have identified a ten-section “empathy circuit” in our brains, and evolutionary biologists such as Frans de Waal have shown that we naturally evolved to care for each other.

This shift is starting to filter out from science and into psychology, business and social action. Smart advertising agencies talk about “empathic brands” that respond to their customers’ needs and make them feel socially connected – in 2013 they will be marketing them to you

Turns Out Empathy is Contagious

Turns Out Empathy is Contagious | Good News worth Sharing | Scoop.it

Is empathy contagious? Turns out it is.

That may be hard to believe. Especially at this time of year, when frantic shoppers cut lines to snag deals and even the good folk at the Salvation Army fall prey to thieving employees.

But, in fact, empathy is part of our anatomy. It's just that, like a muscle, it needs to be flexed. Scientists have already identified "mirror neurons" -- soft-wiring that compels us to feel what others are feeling. When someone else yawns, we yawn. When another suffers, we suffer, too. But now, neuro-researchers have discovered a second empathy highway.

The Link Between Meditation And Empathy

The Link Between Meditation And Empathy | Good News worth Sharing | Scoop.it
Meditation could help people to be more empathetic, according to a small new study from Emory University.

"It's an intriguing result, suggesting that a behavioral intervention could enhance a key aspect of empathy," study researcher Jennifer Mascaro,

After the eight weeks, all the study participants completed the "Reading the Mind in the Eyes" test again. The researchers found that people who underwent the meditation training program had a 4.6 percent higher score on the empathy test at the end of the study period. Meanwhile, people who only partook in the discussion classes didn't experience any increase in empathy scores, and some even experienced a decrease in their scores.

The brain scans also revealed that people who took the meditation courses also had increased brain activity in the regions linked with empathy.

On Human Compassion: Encountering The Dalai Lama's Scientific Mind : NPR

On Human Compassion: Encountering The Dalai Lama's Scientific Mind : NPR | Good News worth Sharing | Scoop.it

In a speech at the College of William and Mary, the Dalai Lama described the unique nature of human compassion versus that of other animals. What matters as much as his conclusions, says commentator Barbara J. King

In this way the Dalai Lama moved fluidly between what I'd call a continuum model of compassion, one in which our brand of loving kindness emerges from that of other mammals, and a dichotomy model, which stresses that our species' compassion is like no other animal's.

But is this accurate? Is there a sharp division such that other animals never express compassion for strangers or enemies? I'm not entirely sure. When Frans de Waal discusses empathy, he likes to tell the story of the captive bonobo Kuni who came to the aid of a wounded bird. And in the wild, elephants may try to help an ailing or dead elephant, even when that animal is a stranger.
