How to Book Your Ticket to Space

How to Book Your Ticket to Space | Good Advice | Scoop.it

The dream of flying to space is close to the heart of every kid – and even many adults.

Such visions make possible ideas like the Intergalactic Travel Bureau. As part of an art festival on Governors Island in New York running June 9 and 10, the travel bureau asks visitors to imagine their dream space vacation. Want to see the rings of Saturn? How about the ice caps of Mars? The exhibit will allow participants to connect with actors and space scientists and come up with the best ways to learn and explore the solar system and beyond.

While such flights of fancy are great to imagine, within a few years it will actually be possible to launch into space without first becoming an astronaut. Space travel may never be as easy and safe as taking a plane from Los Angeles to New York, but ordinary citizens (with a lot of money) can already start putting some cash down on a ticket to space.

The current market is small, with only seven actual space tourists flying over the last decade, but many people dream of the day it grows. Elon Musk, who plans to fly space tourists through his company SpaceX, envisions a ticket to Mars costing a mere $500,000 – though enormous obstacles remain before such a endeavor could become a reality.

Could Cops Use Google As Pre-Cogs? - Slashdot

Could Cops Use Google As Pre-Cogs? - Slashdot | Good Advice | Scoop.it

Slate's Will Oremus does, and wonders if Google could similarly help the police apprehend criminals based on foreknowledge collected from searches. Oremus writes: 'At around 3:45 a.m. on March 24, someone in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., used a mobile phone to Google "chemicals to passout a person." Then the person searched Ask.com for "making people faint." Then Google again, for "ways to kill people in their sleep," "how to suffocate someone," and "how to poison someone." The phone belonged to 23-year-old Nicole Okrzesik. Later that morning, police allege, she and her boyfriend strangled 19-year-old Juliana Mensch as she slept on the floor of their apartment.' In theory, Oremus muses, Google or Ask.com could have flagged Okrzesik's search queries as suspicious and dispatched cops to the scene before Mensch's assailants had the chance to do her in." I bet you're already thinking of just a few reasons why this might not such a good idea.

Adventures of Dr. H.: Mayor Bloomberg, Coke, and the Bible | Good Advice | Scoop.it
C.S. Lewis famously wrote: “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

One of the downsides of ebooks - War and Nookd — eBook Regex Gone Haywire - Slashdot | Good Advice | Scoop.it

After seeing the word 'Nookd' a few more times, he found a dead-tree version of the book and discovered that the word was supposed to be 'kindled.' Every instance of the word 'kindle' in the ebook had been replaced with 'Nook.' "The Superior Formatting Publishing version isn’t a Barnes and Noble book, so this isn’t the work of a rogue Nook marketer from B&N. Rather, it’s likely that Superior Formatting Publishing ported its Kindle version of War and Peace over to the Nook — doing a search and replace to make sure that any Kindle references they’d inserted...

Your Problem Isn't Motivation - It's Follow Through

Your Problem Isn't Motivation - It's Follow Through | Good Advice | Scoop.it

Motivation is in the mind; follow-through is in the practice. Motivation is conceptual; follow-through is practical. In fact, the solution to a motivation problem is the exact opposite of the solution to a follow through problem. The mind is essential to motivation. But with follow through, it's the mind that gets in the way.

Venus Viewing Ends Up With a Different Kind of Transit- VIDEO

Venus Viewing Ends Up With a Different Kind of Transit- VIDEO | Good Advice | Scoop.it

Earlier this week, I took my telescope with solar filter down to my son's school, and for three hours entertained a stream of kids, teachers, and parents with the progress of Venus across the face of the sun with the added bonus of some nice sunspots. The picture, above, was taken through the eyepiece using an iPhone. Toward the end of our viewing, I was experimenting with recording some video - possibly for use with some stacking software to get a higher resolution picture. Instead, I got something else entirely. Check out the surprising video after the jump.
