Looks more like a walk down an exhibit hall of vendors than skill/talent tied to teaching & learning.
Rod Murray's comment, February 13, 7:21 PM
If every teacher had this skill set, that would dramatically change teaching and learning. The "vendors" are, contrary to your suggestion, mostly free technologies that can and do change teaching and learning.
Richard Whiteside's curator insight, February 19, 5:10 AM

These and many other tools are available. But if you are a teacher, what do you think? Is it really necessary to have all these skills? There is so much content readily available online and if you can organise to prepare materials in teams, or have access to a PLN on or offline, then you can share the load.

Some teachers and content creators have specific skills and their expertise can be used or accessed by anyone. Personally, I think it's good for teachers to be aware of the digital possibilities for their teaching context, but it is generally unrealistic for anyone to expect all teachers to become skilled in so many different areas.

Is it not better to pick fewer areas more relevant to you and focus on them? Be a master of a few areas useful to you, not a jack of all trades feeling stressed that you are master of none.

50 of the best Free Apps for teachers

50 of the best Free Apps for teachers | Going Digital | Scoop.it
That’s a pretty general and subjective idea. The best for them as human beings–health, finances, and entertainment? The best for them in the classroom? To connect with other educators? To stay on top of emerging tools and trends in education? To use with students?

For iOS, Android, or Windows Phone? Can we assume there’s WiFi access? Is data use an issue? What about data privacy? And what do we mean by “free” Truly free? Are in-app purchases available? Necessary? Is it a free version that has hideous banners everywhere?

To say that there is a lot to consider is an understatement.

That said, we’ve taken a wide-lens view of the modern teacher and taken a stab at what might be considered 50 of the best really, truly actually free apps available for iOS. They may have some paid options, but they’re each entirely useful without spending a penny.

While we do look at music, health tracking apps, and other teachers-as-a-human-being apps, we focus mostly on the kinds of digital content that will help you teach more effectively to a wider range of students in more compelling and dynamic ways than ever before. All free.

FAQs about Makerspaces

FAQs about Makerspaces | Going Digital | Scoop.it
What is needed to start a Makerspace in a classroom or school?
Passion - You need to have passion and a belief in the educational value of maker-style projects.

Space - This can be a whole room or only part of a room.

Supplies - Start small with simple craft materials. Often sending a message out to colleagues and the community asking for donations of materials works well.

Storage - Create a place to store materials when they are not in use and student projects as they are being worked on.

Where should the Makerspace be placed?

Makerspaces can be located just about anywhere, but there are certain spaces that make more sense in a school setting. Often, the school library is selected to start a Makerspace, as a central location for students and because of the expertise of the librarian. Another option is an unused classroom; if there is an unused woodshop, this might be an ideal space as well. If you are starting small, create a Makerspace right in your classroom.

10 Ways Teacher Planning Should Adjust To The Google Generation

10 Ways Teacher Planning Should Adjust To The Google Generation
Sarah McElrath's insight:

"The age of knowing is slowing giving way to an age of data navigation, and what students need help with should be adjusted accordingly."

Although critical thinking has always been a goal of education, I believe now that the need to memorize facts has diminished (since information is at one's fingertips), those higher level thinking skills have become THE goal of education. Or at least they should be.

I believe one of the barriers to this kind of teaching and learning is that it is much more non-linear. It's messy and it takes longer -- all of which makes it harder to test and more difficult to organize into periods in the school day.

Great article that should get people thinking and discussing.
