A new report by a major academic assessment and research concern reveals that the vast majority of Pacific Islander high school students are not adequately prepared for the college education they desire. According to Iowa-City-based ACT, Inc. – best known for its namesake college entrance examination – less than one in five Pacific Islanders who took the ACT met the scoring benchmarks in all four of the exam’s subject areas and another 11 percent met the benchmarks in three. Moreover, 40 percent of Pacific Islanders met zero benchmarks.

For a forensics geek like me, public debates are near and dear to my Chautauqua-loving heart. First, public debates focus otherwise speed-obsessed debaters to slow down their arguments to appeal to a lay, though highly educated, judging pool. Secondly, public debates are fantastic preparation for the rhetorical demands of the working world, where one is often asked to slowly and persuasively defend one’s position in small groups and public forums. Finally, public debates serve a critical civic function, causing spectators and contestants alike to think deeply, and often counterintuively, about issues of real concern to themselves and their communities.
