Organapedia's curator insight, January 23, 2013 11:52 AM

Paul Estcott: Throughout the history of modern medicine, allergies have been linked to a wide range of factors, which run the entire gamut of human existence, from lifestyle and environmental causes, to genetic predispositions and dietary choices. Food allergies are generally disruptive to the course of human life, be it to a smaller extent, or to a severe one, where the sufferer is forced to closely monitor the ingredient list of everything they ingest, paying special attention to common allergens (such as peanuts, soy, and gluten), as well as to less common ones (shellfish, for instance).

Despite the fact that the problem could seem mild on first glance, some 30,000 people in the United States report food allergy issues to the emergency room each year, making it one of the most widespread health concerns in the country, according to Health Testing Centers.

Luckily, since this is an issue that affects many, it also means it is constantly under public scrutiny, as well as in the attention of the medical and scientific communities. As such, in recent news, a brand new medical report confirmed the assumption that exposure to elevated levels of pesticides and other chemical disinfectants is inextricably linked to food allergies.

The research was undertaken by experts and healthcare professionals from the Montefiore Medical Center, in Bronx, New York. It determined that people exposed to chemicals called dichlorophenols (commonly abbreviated as DCPs) have every cause for concern, when it comes to food allergies, and should immediately sign up for allergy testing, in case they haven’t done this already.

DCPs are the result of a chemical component breakdown that occurs naturally in some of the most widely used types of pesticides (among which the experts notoriously listed a chlorine derivate which is commonly employed by public water-work companies for the purification of drinking water). These chemicals are also used in several other mass products, among which air fresheners, cake deodorizers used for the sanitization of public urinals, herbicides, and moth balls. The scientists used data collected via the National Health and Nutrition Survey, in order to compare the level of these chemicals present in the urine samples they harvested from participants in the test, to the level of food antibodies that occurred in the participants’ blood.

While this method is not entirely foul-proof, since it fails to take into account sensitivity to foods that some people can live with, while being entirely unaware of them, it is perhaps the most accurate one currently available to modern science. There were over 2,200 partakers in the test, and the vast majority did come up positive for traces of chemicals in their urine. Of that majority, 400 people were sensitive to the consumption of certain foods (eggs, milk, peanuts, etc.), while an even larger number (over 1,000 people) displayed a sensitivity to common environmental allergens – ragweed and pet dander were among the most commonly cited occurrences.

Luckily, food allergy blood test can now swiftly and accurately determine such issues, which makes it relatively easy for sufferers to avoid the entire host of medical issues associated with allergies, such as breathing, digestion, or even cardiovascular problems.

Another Environmentalist Apologizes - Anti-GMO Stance Was Misguided

Another Environmentalist Apologizes - Anti-GMO Stance Was Misguided | GMO Awareness | Scoop.it

18 Jan 2013 - KEN COOK - HUFFINGTON  POST GREEN At the time, it seemed quixotic to campaign against GMOs. The FDA and USDA were blithely rolling on their backs for multinational corporations that were poised to reap billions of dollars in profit from the technology....

Had I paid more attention, I might have foreseen how badly this technology would go awry. Toxic chemicals would be slathered on crops to battle GMO-resistant pests and weeds. According to a recent study by Washington State University professor of agriculture Chuck Benbrook, the use of herbicides has increased by 527 million pounds, or 11 percent, since 1996, as more and more GMO crops have been planted.... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/don-carr/another-environmentalist-apologies-gmos_b_2505033.html

Parkinson's Linked To Pesticides

Parkinson's Linked To Pesticides | GMO Awareness | Scoop.it

Via Organapedia

Organapedia's curator insight, January 12, 2013 6:25 AM

Alex Formuzis: Environmental Working Group president Ken Cook often points out that many pesticides that were once liberally sprayed on food crops and considered perfectly safe turn out to be anything but -- after farm workers and consumers have been exposed to them for years.

Earlier this week, while Lindsay Lohan's latest legal woes were trending on Google News, an important study that got little attention in the media gave a big boost to Ken's argument. A team of neurologists at the University of California, Los Angeles demonstrated an unsettling link between Parkinson's disease and exposure to a fungicide called benomyl that was used for decades on wide variety of fruits, vegetables and nuts before being discontinued in 2001.

The UCLA team published its findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Early symptoms of Parkinson's, which afflicts millions, include difficulty walking, muscle tremors and trouble moving at a normal rate. As the disease progresses, people can develop behavioral and emotional problems, including dementia, memory loss, depression and hallucinations.

The UCLA study had three parts. First, the scientists showed that in a lab dish, benomyl damages or destroys neurons in the brain that produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that brain cells use to communicate. Parkinson's -- a degenerative disease that afflicts millions -- has been linked to cell damage in a part of the brain that produces dopamine.

Then the researchers tested benomyl on zebra fish, which are frequently used in neurological and other biological studies, and showed that the exposed fish lost large numbers of neurons -- but only those that make dopamine.

More specifically, the study showed that benomyl blocks the action of a vital enzyme (aldehyde dehydrogenase, or ALDH) that prevents a naturally-occurring toxin known as DOPAL from accumulating in the brain. Buildup of the toxin has been shown to damage neurons and increase the risk of developing Parkinson's.

In the course of their work, the scientists also assessed the health of more than 1,000 people and found that those who lived or worked within 500 meters of locations where benomyl had once been used had a 200 percent greater chance of being diagnosed with Parkinson's.

Scientific experts have not yet figured out the relative importance of genetics and the environment in causing the disease, but the new research indicates that "environmental factors almost certainly play an important role," said lead author Arthur Fitzmaurice. "These can trigger the development of the disease, especially in those with genetic predispositions for Parkinson's."

DuPont, which manufactured benomyl, took it off the market in 2001 over health concerns after more than three decades of use in conventional agriculture. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists the pesticide as a possible human carcinogen, and it's been the focus of several lawsuits, including one that awarded $4 million to a family whose son was born without eyes after his mother was exposed to high levels of the chemical in her work.

UCLA's Fitzmaurice pointed out to EWG that the study produced some potentially good news for those living with Parkinson's.

"The study reveals a new cellular mechanism ... through which pesticides might be contributing to Parkinson's risk in a human population," he said. "This might prove to be a target for therapies to slow the progression of the disease by stimulating" activity of the enzyme ALDH.

Benomyl is the latest example of a pesticide that had been used for years with few, if any, concerns for human health, only to be found later to pose a potentially serious risk. Parkinson's is one of the most debilitating chronic illnesses and afflicts between 500,000 and 1.5 million people in the U.S. alone, with approximately 50,000 new cases each year.

The UCLA team is now looking at a number of other pesticides in current use to determine if they could pose health risks like those linked to benomyl. Fitzmaurice said the group plans to publish those findings in the coming months. (Click on headline to see the source for this article.)

Insecticide 'unacceptable' danger to bees and food, report finds

Insecticide 'unacceptable' danger to bees and food, report finds | GMO Awareness | Scoop.it

Jan 16, 2013 - Guardian

Campaigners say the conclusion by the European Food Safety Authority is a 'death knell' for neonicotinoid pesticides...

Bees and other pollinators are critical to one-third of all food, but two major studies in March 2012, and others since, have implicated neonicotinoid pesticides in the decline in the insects, alongside habitat loss and disease. In April, the European commission demanded a re-examination of the risks posed by the chemicals, including Bayer's widely used imidacloprid and two others.,,  http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/jan/16/insecticide-unacceptable-danger-bees?CMP=twt_gu

Scientific Paper Argues Against Factory Farms "Feeding the World" | GMO Awareness | Scoop.it

19 Jan 2013 NATURAL SOCIETY To "feed the world" by 2050, we need massive industrial-scale, corporate-led agriculture. Well, that's what some say, but it couldn't be more untrue....

A group of researchers led by a distinguished soil expert has published a paper urging the US to rethink its current alliance with Big Ag. In its condensed form in the magazine Science (you can find the extended version hereas published by the National Research Council) , lead author John P. Reganold from Washington State University claims that the US’s current ag-research policy is flawed and not the vehicle needed to feed the world
