Celiac Disease Diagnosis Process: Start with Blood Tests

It is important not to start on a gluten free diet before seeking medical testing. From what I understand (I'm not a medical doctor), this masks the results that would indicate Celiac disease. For me it was much easier, I had DH. But I still got a blood test which confirmed the DH biopsy. Delete the scoop?

A peak body for coeliac sufferers says better diagnosis is needed to help the 183,000 who don't yet know they have the disease.

Considering the difficulty in obtaining a positive diagnosis, it would stand to reason that there are hundreds of thousands of undiagnosed Celiacs out there. As awareness and diagnostic medicine continues to improve, I imagine that the number of people following a gluten-free diet will increase.

@QuakerOats Corn Bran -- likely not gluten-free, definitely not appropriate for a gluten-free diet
Via Twitter, I recently asked Quaker Oats if their Corn Bran cereal was gluten-free. Today I received a tweeted response that, "Due to the way oats are grown & stored, there is the possibility of cross contact. It may contain a trace amount of gluten."
This is too bad, really. This used to be one of my favorite cereals as a kid. I suppose testing a few batches for gluten levels wouldn't be a very secure way of determining this product's suitability for a gluten-free diet. Afterall, the cross contact is not easily controllable.
Seems to me that there are a lot of cereals on the shelves that are very close to gluten-free. General Mills took the gluten-free plunge with many of their Chex cereals and Kellogg's did with a gluten-free Rice Krispies. With just a few ingredient modifications and some awareness in the processing and storage stages of production, many more mainstream cereals could be made gluten-free.

Ever wonder what happens to all those celiac disease patients who volunteer to do a gluten-challenge in the name of science? Well, the short answer is that they likely suffer, and may incur gut damage, at least in the short term.
"Even though they did not find anything revolutionary, the results and design of their study will likely be helpful in shaping future gluten-challenge studies in patients with celiac disease."

Don't be shy about interrogating your server. As long as you are polite, clear, and knowledgeable, most servers will be very happy to help. I'm always surprised by how many servers I find that are gluten free. I'll ask as many questions as necessary until I feel comfortable with the restaurant or entree. I've sat with an entree in front of me while the server returns to the kitchen to verify something I see on my plate. BUT, I always tip well when served well!

Their investigation revealed elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory IL-8, IL-17 and sCD25 in both active celiac disease and in refractory celiac disease, types I and II. They also found that RCDII patients displayed higher serum levels of soluble granzyme-B and IL-6 in comparison to active celiac disease patients. Furthermore, EATL patients showed higher levels of IL-6 as compared to all other groups. Otherwise, the team found no differences between RCDI and active CD or RCDII.

A team of researchers recently took a look at how well the hepatitis B vaccine protected people with celiac disease over time, and how well they responded to a vaccine booster.
"...compared with healthy control subjects, people with celiac disease have lower seroprotective levels of anti-HBs eleven years after main vaccination, in addition to having a substantially lower response rate to a booster dose of the hepatitis B vaccine."

How did I not know about this place? They have a dedicated gluten free menu with a lot of choices, including pancakes! And it seems they know what they are doing. My plate came out with a little sticker attached saying that the food was prepared with my "allergy" in mind. Check out eggharbor.csee for locations. Can't wait to go back.

However, the cited study clearly states that they are using the Sandwich R5 ELISA. It has already been established that the Sandwich R5 ELISA is unreliable for testing beer, and for this reason, most companies do not use it when testing for hydrolyzed gluten. This makes the article's title highly misleading, as the inaccuracy of the Sandwich R5 ELISA for detecting beer is, in most cases, irrelevant."

On the heels of a recent survey that finds a surprisingly high number of Americans who said they are avoiding gluten, the writers of online content (I specifically avoid the term reporters) are once again pushing an anti-GF agenda.
If you read the report summary http://goo.gl/j9Ttj, you'll see that the general trend is that the interest in reducing or eliminating gluten is on the rise, especially as relates to orders placed in restaurants. Despite expectations (possibly read: hopes), the interest in gluten-free persists.
Cue the insanity from blogs:

These are just two of many articles that seem to often link to one another. Hey, I'm not suggesting there's a conspiracy. I'm just wondering why this rather innocuous survey leads to the conclusion that consumers are wasting money on trying to improve their dietary health.
