Celiac Disease Diagnosis Process: Start with Blood Tests
MillerP's insight:

It is important not to start on a gluten free diet before seeking medical testing. From what I understand (I'm not a medical doctor), this masks the results that would indicate Celiac disease. For me it was much easier, I had DH. But I still got a blood test which confirmed the DH biopsy.

Increasing Incidence of Celiac Disease in a North American Population - Celiac.com | GlutenFreeScoop | Scoop.it
In an effort to determine the accuracy of claims that rates of celiac disease are on the rise, a team of researchers recently examined rates of celiac disease in a well-defined US county.

"Overall, rates of celiac disease have continued to rise over the last decade in this North-American population. This study supports the observation that celiac disease rates in America are, in fact, going up."

Tough question: is Crisco® shortening gluten free? | GlutenFreeScoop | Scoop.it
MillerP's insight:

I don't know how to interpret the statements on this FAQ page. Is Crisco just refusing to hold themselves to a standard that has yet to be approved by the FDA, or would their shortening really test at more than 20ppm?

"We are reporting a young adult with Lane Hamilton Syndrome, who realized that he was having significant gastrointestinal complaints only when they disappeared on gluten free diet (GFD). This case report reiterates the fact that celiac disease should be considered in all patients of IPH because of the therapeutic implications."

Undiagnosed coeliacs a time bomb: experts

A peak body for coeliac sufferers says better diagnosis is needed to help the 183,000 who don't yet know they have the disease.
MillerP's insight:

Considering the difficulty in obtaining a positive diagnosis, it would stand to reason that there are hundreds of thousands of undiagnosed Celiacs out there. As awareness and diagnostic medicine continues to improve, I imagine that the number of people following a gluten-free diet will increase.

Can we please stop talking about gluten-free as a fad!

@QuakerOats Corn Bran -- likely not gluten-free, definitely not appropriate for a gluten-free diet

Via Twitter, I recently asked Quaker Oats if their Corn Bran cereal was gluten-free. Today I received a tweeted response that, "Due to the way oats are grown & stored, there is the possibility of cross contact. It may contain a trace amount of gluten."

This is too bad, really. This used to be one of my favorite cereals as a kid. I suppose testing a few batches for gluten levels wouldn't be a very secure way of determining this product's suitability for a gluten-free diet. Afterall, the cross contact is not easily controllable.

Seems to me that there are a lot of cereals on the shelves that are very close to gluten-free. General Mills took the gluten-free plunge with many of their Chex cereals and Kellogg's did with a gluten-free Rice Krispies. With just a few ingredient modifications and some awareness in the processing and storage stages of production, many more mainstream cereals could be made gluten-free.

Top 10 Questions to Ask When Dining Out Gluten Free

Top 10 Questions to Ask When Dining Out Gluten Free | GlutenFreeScoop | Scoop.it
Dining out safely, whether you are a celiac or gluten intolerant, can be a frightening and uncomfortable ordeal. What it takes to stay safe for your health.
MillerP's insight:

Don't be shy about interrogating your server. As long as you are polite, clear, and knowledgeable, most servers will be very happy to help. I'm always surprised by how many servers I find that are gluten free. I'll ask as many questions as necessary until I feel comfortable with the restaurant or entree. I've sat with an entree in front of me while the server returns to the kitchen to verify something I see on my plate. BUT, I always tip well when served well!

Non-invasive Approach: New Serum Parameters Show Celiac Disease and RCDI Different from RCDII and EATL - Celiac.com | GlutenFreeScoop | Scoop.it

Their investigation revealed elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory IL-8, IL-17 and sCD25 in both active celiac disease and in refractory celiac disease, types I and II. They also found that RCDII patients displayed higher serum levels of soluble granzyme-B and IL-6 in comparison to active celiac disease patients. Furthermore, EATL patients showed higher levels of IL-6 as compared to all other groups. Otherwise, the team found no differences between RCDI and active CD or RCDII.

Can we Reliably Test Beer for Gluten? - Celiac.com

Can we Reliably Test Beer for Gluten? - Celiac.com | GlutenFreeScoop | Scoop.it

"People are wary (for good reason) of products that are derived from gluten-containing ingredients, and few products have received quite as much heat as beer."

"The article [recently published in Medical Daily] seems well-meaning enough; after all, there's nothing wrong with taking a precautionary stance when one's health is on the line. However, the cited study clearly states that they are using the Sandwich R5 ELISA. It has already been established that the Sandwich R5 ELISA is unreliable for testing beer, and for this reason, most companies do not use it when testing for hydrolyzed gluten. This makes the article's title highly misleading, as the inaccuracy of the Sandwich R5 ELISA for detecting beer is, in most cases, irrelevant."

It doesn't take much to generate gluten-free backlash.

See the survey here http://goo.gl/j9Ttj

MillerP's insight:

On the heels of a recent survey that finds a surprisingly high number of Americans who said they are avoiding gluten, the writers of online content (I specifically avoid the term reporters) are once again pushing an anti-GF agenda.

If you read the report summary http://goo.gl/j9Ttj, you'll see that the general trend is that the interest in reducing or eliminating gluten is on the rise, especially as relates to orders placed in restaurants. Despite expectations (possibly read: hopes), the interest in gluten-free persists.

Cue the insanity from blogs:

1. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/03/12/why-shouldnt-go-gluten-free/

2. http://business.time.com/2013/03/13/why-were-wasting-billions-on-gluten-free-food/

These are just two of many articles that seem to often link to one another. Hey, I'm not suggesting there's a conspiracy. I'm just wondering why this rather innocuous survey leads to the conclusion that consumers are wasting money on trying to improve their dietary health.
