Michel Bauwens, founder of the P2P Foundation, was invited to chair a research team exploring the possibilities for “fundamentally re-imagining” Ecuadorian socity on the basis of commoning, open networks and peer production. The Quito-based project sought ideas from people of all walks of life for 10 months, and released their Transition Plan (available in English here) in June. Bauwens offers his personal analysis of the process below.

Brussels authorities help silence opposition to the ‘Great Transatlantic Market’ (TTIP)
16 May 2014 – Brussels – for immediate release
This Thursday morning over a thousand people were in the streets of Brussels, attempting to peacefully protest against austerity and the proposed great transatlantic market (TTIP) which were being discussed in the absence of citizens at the European Business Summit.
In an unprovoked move 281 people were violently arrested, including Belgian and European parliamentarians and candidates, senior trade union officials, farmers and many elderly citizens. Brussels Mayor, Yvan Mayeur, must publicly answer why such violent and disproportionate actions were taken.
Emilie Paumard of CADTM said, “We came into the streets because our political leaders are not listening. It seems they’ve only got ears for big business and their representatives who co-organised the European Business Summit. And to be treated so brutally, as if we were violent criminals – when our actions were entirely peaceful. A Europe of police violence, of politico-big business-police collusion, is the complete opposite to the Europe that the D19-20 Alliance, Alter Summit and our European allies are fighting for.”
“The police provocation and the brutal repression are inexcusable. An investigation into the how such events occurred is the least we expect from those responsible, especially after the cabinet of Yvan Mayeur explicitly promised our delegation that those arrested would be promptly released. The blame lies with either the Bourgmeister or his police commissioner Vandersmissen. 10 days before an election, citizens have the right to know who makes the laws in Mayeur-City, and which parties are OK with such brutalities. We are preparing an official complaint and expect a strong political reaction.” Said Felipe Van Keirsbilck, Secretary General of Belgian trade union CNE.
Luc Hollands from the Milk Producers Group, MIG, added, “How peaceful protestors have been treated is atrocious, but it must not detract from the reason we were in the streets in the first place. The continuation of the austerity that will come from the proposed EU-US free trade deal is only going to make European citizens and producers poorer, unhealthier, more precarious and further from the sort of future we were on the streets fighting for. It’s not policing attitudes that must change, it’s the entire political system. But despite what we’ve witnessed from the police, today’s actions have underlined the diversity and the unity of our alliance and strengthens our will to build democracy from below.”

Lately, we’ve been talking about the techniques of manipulation used by the government and mass media, regarding the privatization of public education, and all public benefits.
In these first months of legislature, the better part of this manipulation has been aimed at rendering us into a state of shock, after which, intimidated and paralyzed, we would not react against the losses of rights brutally imposed on us. The measures, announcements and declarations of the autonomic and central governments are meted out to us day by day, gradually, like a poisonous drip of constant anxiety. Relentlessly, the media – in some cases, better to say “propagandists” – continues their tireless preaching, like a disheartening echo of bad news from on high (from the council of ministers or the rating agencies).
How have global rivalries shaped the world we live in, and how do they continue to affect the way some of the most crucial geopolitical decisions of our time are made? In this interview with renowned political scientist Kees van der Pijl, we look at some of the most pivotal events of recent years, from 9/11 to the Arab Spring and the current crisis in Ukraine, to reveal the surprising underlying forces at work.
GNUnion networks and organizes at the same time, in order to stitch a mass mesh network between like-minded peers, linking them and their network bases each other strategically. It strive to build dynamic, free, libre, and open source spaces, collective agendas and strategies to act upon in a harmonized way.
GNUnion encourages its peers to collectivize their individual social and communicational power to swarm around dynamical, creative and positive actions. Such collective actions create impacts at unpredicted magnitudes, regardless how large and powerful are the chosen targets.
Combining peer to peer social relations and technologies and embedding them into all its internal and external processes and relationships, GNUnion ultimately aims at hyper-empowerment of all the nodes involved in her mesh network. Below are some of the spaces we have been building on N-1, and ON an online social network spaces developed as free nodes using Lorea code.
GNUnion invites you to network, self-organize, and stitch One Big Meshwork by linking like-minded peers and their network bases to each other strategically. We call everyone striving to build dynamic, free, libre, and open source spaces bottom up, to bring their collective agendas and strategies in touch and act upon them in an harmonized way.
GNUnion encourages all its peers to collectivize their individual social and communicational power to swarm around dynamical, creative and positive actions as much as possible. Such collective actions, as we have been witnessing, are capable of making a real impact at unpredicted magnitudes on chosen targets, regardless how large and powerful they are.
Combining peer to peer social relations and technologies and embedding them into all its internal and external processes and relationships, we ultimately aim at hyper-empowerment of all the nodes involved in this One Big Meshwork.
Below are some of the projects we are currently empowering by networking and self-organizing on the Organizing Network (ON). Which is an online collaborative social network site provided by comrades at May First / People Link and Union Solidarity International. ON is build on Elg, which is developed by Lorea.

- By Dan Gallin
The Socialist International is the organization of the world’s socialist, social-democratic and labour parties, by a loose definition. Its headquarters are in London (Maritime House, Clapham).
It is the successor organization of the historical Internationals of the labour movement, the First (International Working Men’s Association) (1864-1879), the Second (Labour International) (1889-1916), which split three ways during World War I and reconstituted itself as the Labour and Socialist International (LSI) in 1923 The LSI did not survive World War II and the present Socialist International was founded in 1951 in Frankfurt as its successor.
At the last count, it had 162 member parties in 100 countries, and it is now in a deep crisis which reflects the crisis of most of its members, certainly its most influential ones.
Why is any of this important?
Because socialism has been the ideological foundation of most of the world’s trade union movement, not necessarily always in the same acceptance of the term, and today we are faced with a crisis of socialism, which is principally a crisis of the meaning of socialism.
SaysUs just has become affiliated to May First / People Link (Mayfirst.org), which has been providing many useful services to the activists and movements around the world. We did just send the below text to the comrades involved in and collaborate each other at May First / People Link. Yet our call is open to all floss developers, commoners, activists and anyone who shares the vision that we tried to formulate in the text as simple as possible. We invite all comrades around the world who share similar values and virtues to join us and engage with our comrades at May First / People Link network.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity – in all this vastness – there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
Join Our Email List: https://lists.riseup.net/www/info/workersoftheworldGNUnion is an idea. It is a collaborative effort and a swarm like social activity aiming to interconnect emancipatory cultures, individuals, institutions, visions, strategies and networks to each other. Global networked labour union is a living, conscious and shared map of locally grounded, translocally interacting autonomous collectivities (simultaneously in and between local, regional, national, continental levels) that are forming a global whole. GNUnion of the nodes, hubs and ties involved serves to generate healthier, stronger and clearer path to emancipation beyond capitalist mode of production without destruction.
We therefore invite peers who share the idea, to network and organize to stitch a global mesh-network by linking thier struggles, network bases and labour to each other. Our call is to all who strive for building dynamic, free, libre, and open source spaces, where our autonomous agendas, geographies and visions can interact and become collectivised bottom up manner. While each of which becomes more empowered to move further independantly, in an harmony.
Today, May First 2014. The radical change process the humanity have been going through for a while recently got accelerated. Capitalism is dying and the entire planet is headed faster towards two alternative scenarios. First one is the darkest option, a shadowy Orwellian post-capitalism. Before this option to come into reality a catastrophic war between ‘great-powers’ is inevitable. The second option is much brighter one, an healthy and joyful advanced communiterian civilisation. We invite you all to consider that the time might have come to make your biggest bid and jump forward in your collaborative efforts, projects and activism. This #MayDay we call on you and your community to put further efforts to collaborate with others in order to give an happy end to the ‘Game of Morons’ and to build the path that would lead us all out of the ‘Game of Drones’.

In this interview, Neal Gorenflo (founder, Shareable), Michel Bauwens (founder, P2P Foundation), andJohn Restakis (author, “Humanizing the Economy”) speak with Enric Duran. Duran is a Catalan anti-capitalist activist, perhaps best known for his well-publicized act of “financial civil disobedience” announced on September 17, 2008, in which he described his having attained roughly half a million Euros in bank loans and subsequently distributing these funds to support anti-capitalist activist movements. As it was never his intention to pay these debts but instead to stir debate about the unfair legal advantages afforded to the powerful financial elite, he was soon labeled “Robin Banks”, and faced with a lengthy prison sentence. The resulting legal actions and his subsequent seclusion have left him living virtually underground, although he maintains selective contact and has stated that he may return, contingent on a variety of factors. Despite his precarious legal status, his work continues undiminished in the Catalan Integral Cooperative (CIC), which describes itself as a “transitional initiative for social transformation from below, through self-management, self-organization and networking”. Here is Enric Duran talking about his work and life.

Since 2010-2011 we have been rising from our ashes in Athens, Paris, Wisconsin, Tunis, Cairo, Madrid, New York, Tel-Aviv, Rio, Istanbul and everywhere. We have been making millions of new connections, strengthening ties around the planet, we have learned a lot through our networks and linked them on the ground!
We started to become One, being connected without leaving our ‘selves’ aside. We have been learning what does really mean to work together on a daily base, improving most direct forms of solidarity amongst the people who live thousands of miles away from each other, accross the continents. We have opened a massive space, possibility, star-gate towards mature and advanced brave new worlds, parallel universes, visions of planetary human civilizations based on economies that work for all, not for a tiny minority of ruling classes!
