7 Apps for Teaching Children Coding Skills - Edutopia | Global Tech | Scoop.it

"It's hard to imagine a single career that doesn't have a need for someone who can code. Everything that "just works" has some type of code that makes it run. Coding (a.k.a. programming) is all around us. That's why all the cool kids are coding . . . or should be. Programming is not just the province of pale twenty-somethings in skinny jeans, hunched over three monitors, swigging Red Bull. Not any more! The newest pint-sized coders have just begun elementary school."

Annie R's comment, September 3, 2013 10:55 PM
i think that the mobile learning section (#2) was very interesting for me. as a student, tablets are very easy and a wonderful way to learn, but we still should be exposed to things like textbooks, instruments, and a pencil. Many children now have been completely consumed in their electronics, I am guilty of complaining when i have to put my iPad down.
John Williams's comment, September 4, 2013 3:54 PM
Annie, I couldn't agree with you more unfortunately I do not see this trend reversing. They are no longer teaching penmanship in school it will soon be a lost are and the text book is losing way to the e-book it is already happening. It is cheaper.(ooppps) cost effective. It is doing a disservice to our youth. I went to an old catholic school in addition to being taught cursive we were taught script also, and a love of books is taught at an early age. Technology is a great tool, but it is just that a tool, it wears out it changes the written word is always the same, The language may change depending on the country but it is the same it does not upgrade a classic is still a classic. A Commador 64 is obsolete, by todays standards.

Educational leadership in an online world: connecting students to technology responsibly, safely, and ethically

95% of students age 12-17 are online and of that 80% use social media. How can schools utilize technology effectively in learning an still keep our kids safe? Respect yourself and others, educate yourself and others and protect yourself and others. We need to teach kids to safely use technology. As educators, choose programs and applications that are well researched and reliable.

Ernest Wang's curator insight, March 15, 2016 8:55 AM

I agree that digital literacy may cause lack of leadership. To me,all this problems would become even more worse as now more and more people start abusing technology and not so much for study related stuff.Hence,it is important that something has to be done.Perhaps parents can encourage their child to leave their handphones and other technology related item at home unless it is a must.Or maybe teachers can have students to surrender their phones at the start of the day and only returning to them at the end of the day.Parents and teachers can reward them after each day to encourage students to not have contact with technology and would not abuse it.This may influence students to be more active and playing outdoor activities. It benefits them as lesser people would have eye related problems such as myopia. This may or may not be fool proof as more students are addicted to their handphones and might not want to leave their handphones.

No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can’t Wait

Digital literacy is about more than just adding technology into the teaching we already do. The following common teaching practices that we have seen in classrooms as researchers and as parents of school-age children do not help develop digital literacy and may even kill students’ motivation to develop their savvy use of technology and the Internet. We must stop these practices. Immediately.

Bonnie I agree parents are important today so many seem to be tuned out to the needs of there children, it is a lot more than just material needs, that parents need to provide, and with the prevalence of single parent homes, it is even harder. I feel as much for the parent of these homes as I do for the children it can not be easy wearing all the hats.
