Lost hiker: 'When you find my body...'

Lost hiker: 'When you find my body...' | Global Solo Travel Trends | Scoop.it
Geraldine Largay knew she was so very lost that the chances of her making it out of the thick Maine woods were gone.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
This post really demonstrates the danger of getting lost even with a hiking buddy. Worse yet, hiking alone, a simple sprained ankle can be dangerous if it is too difficult to make it back to safety. It is important not to assume you will get a signal on your phone or your battery won't decide to die on you.  See our post at SoloTrekker4U.com on 5 Tips for Solo Travelers for Hiking Safely.

Las Vegas named as most popular destination in the US | Global Solo Travel Trends | Scoop.it
To celebrate the company's anniversary, stacks of data have been analysed to determine the places users in the US show the most interest in.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
It's now official! Las Vegas has been named America's most popular destination. It has been a long-time convention center as well as for vacations. Although Las Vegas is best known for casinos and lots of entertainment, there is lots more to do.  The Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon and lots of outdoor activity are available options.

Expert Travel Tips You Never Thought Of

Expert Travel Tips You Never Thought Of | Global Solo Travel Trends | Scoop.it
Wouldn't it be nice, before every trip, to call up an expert and get her advice on what to pack or how to upgrade to first class? Well, we can't promise a phone chat, but we can give you those tips right here and now.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
With such an intriguing title, it is hard to pass this by without taking a look. I was pleased to see that they have some of my favorite tips. (Remember to have your carry-on for everything you need at hand: even snacks! Don't forget to have some chocolate handy) A new tip: Use your phone and photograph the back not just the front of your credit cards.  I had photocopied the fronts and sometimes laboriously written out the information on the back in years gone by. Save yourself some work by snapping the photos with you phone before you set out.

Baby sloths in Costa Rica sanctuary where they learn all about life in VERY slow lane

Baby sloths in Costa Rica sanctuary where they learn all about life in VERY slow lane | Global Solo Travel Trends | Scoop.it
These pictures show impossibly cute baby sloths at the Sloth Institute in Costa Rica. The centre is a lifeline for them as they probably wouldn't have stood a chance if left alone in the wild.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
Costa Rica is already a top solo travel destination and also a favorite of couples, families and groups. It has one of the most diverse eco-systems in the planet.  You can also zipline and go beachcombing while seeing remarkable wildlife, like the sloth!  (Spoiler alert, they were also seen on my Amazon Adventure Upriver in Brazil.) In any case, if work or juggling duties at home has exhausted you for now, take a break from life in the fast lane. View sloths in their natural habitats or wildlife and rescue centers.

Elizabeth Avery's insight:
I was really intrigued by this list, virtually all that I had visited.  Although expensive, I would also add all the Nordic countries' capitals as solo-friendly. In a very different region, I found Siem Reap, Cambodia a top solo travel destination.  As the base for visiting Angkor Wat, it has multiple other temples and sights to see. Another nice feature for solo travelers in Southeast Asia? Even 4 to 5-star hotels are relatively cheap in contrast to much of the world.

How to Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) – Equipment & Lessons for Beginners

How to Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) – Equipment & Lessons for Beginners | Global Solo Travel Trends | Scoop.it
What’s SUP? It’s not a greeting. It’s stand up paddle boarding, one of the world’s fastest-growing water sports. Frequently referenced by its familiar three-letter acronym, stand up paddle boarding is a cross between kayaking and surfing.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
It looks so easy to me! However, all of us beginners can likely benefit from this post. Visit us at SoloTrekker4U.com and send us your comments.

Detained Americans Fast Facts

Detained Americans Fast Facts | Global Solo Travel Trends | Scoop.it
Read CNN's Fast Facts about recent cases of foreign governments detaining U.S. citizens.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
This is one area that is seriously overlooked.  Whenever I plan a trip abroad, I check both State Department and Internet resources on local regulations. One that is very important and is an issue for most travelers: prescription and over the counter drugs. Even if legal at home, they may not be abroad. In addition, having a personal prescription may not be enough.  Lastly, if you travel with a large supply of drugs, it may be deemed with the intent to distribute. In the past, some destinations have had mandatory 4 year jail sentences for violations for more than 200 substances. So don't give u and plan on a "staycation". The important thing is to "know before you go" and follow the required procedures if you must carry prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs on travel.

12 Incredible Last-Minute Vacations That Don't Cost A Fortune

The only thing more oppressive than waiting for summer to arrive is the number of days between now and the next long weekend.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
Santa Fe is really a top solo travel destination. I spent a snowy Christmas there and loved the small town feel. It is filled with historic buildings, shops and street stalls with fine local crafts and jewelry, local cafes and formal restaurants. It is a good connection to Taos if you are an avid skier or to nearby art venues such as Sedona. You can also connect with state or national parks. Even better news? In the summer's heat, the prices should be quite low!

Elizabeth Avery's insight:
I highly recommend Cambodia and Southeast Asia for Christmas or New Year's. When I went last year, the weather was perfect. I was surprised as a woman solo traveler how easy it was. English was widely spoken and many places accepted US dollars. I connected with a Mekong River cruise which is an excellent way to arrive in Vietnam and later add on Thailand for the perfect start to any New Year!

Vogue: This is how to spend a perfect 48 hours in Munich.

Vogue: This is how to spend a perfect 48 hours in Munich. | Global Solo Travel Trends | Scoop.it
This is how to spend a perfect 48 hours in Munich.
Elizabeth Avery's insight:
Whenever I see an article in Vogue, two words immediately come to mind: elegant and expensive. However, beyond high-end shopping this link to Munich as a solo travel destination (or for everyone) is intriguing.

Rather than Oktoberfest, I have a different first memory of the Bavarian capital. As an exchange student in Gymnasium, I covertly carried a miniature dictionary. I was stymied by a sign at the bottom of a really tall hill in the city center. It kept directing visitors to a funicular.  Having never seen that word before in any language, I labored up this precipice with my small but heavy suitcase. When I arrived at the top en route to the youth hostel, I noticed a cable car arriving at the same second. Passengers (well-rested!) glided out of, of course, the funicular!.  I did go on to learn and admire much about Munich during my stay but only after learning at least one new word in my native language.

If you haven't been to Munich yet or plan to go, do see what Vogue recommends and set your GPS for "avoid routes rivaling Mt. Everest".
