The technology that makes you better than your competition today is obsolete tomorrow. Any knowledge you already possess is depreciating at an accelerating rate. The way we understand leadership today needs to evolve. Understanding that what you once knew that got you where you are is not enough to keep going is important. Understanding the new responsibilities and expectations of leaders is important. For instance, being a good leader sometimes means being a good follower. And as this article points out, a good leader is a consummate learner. Without that, the things you are leading people to have already passed and others are already on to the next thing.

I would like to offer one key philosophy that we at our company have been offering to our leaders.....Learning is not enough, we as leaders need to be constantly learning, unlearning, and re-learning.  The game has changed and the rules are evolving by the minute. 

 

Keep your running shoes on, the ride is exciting as long as you remain open, flexible, and adaptable to change.  Remember, if it is difficult...you are about to grow and learn something new.

Essentially, everything we are exposed to has a potential for becoming a norm in our brain. When we create heuristics, shortcuts, or otherwise find ways to not only do something and/or improve it we are essentially using the findings of this article in an applied fashion. Our brain has the capacity to become acclimated to whatever we throw at it essentially, but what does that mean for the workplace?

 

How many times have we talked about people being stuck in their perspective at work, or the need to bring in an outside perspective? This reasearch shows that the old addage of "if you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail" seems to hold true after time. The brain actually does begin to process situations based on an unconscious heuristic that allows it to use less processing power than may be used for a novel situation. The implication is that for roles that require creative thinking, and being able to move outside of the box, a person should have exposure to new, novel situations more often and have the opportunity to break out of the basic mental processing process. Applications in learning & development, leadership, and tech are huge here!
