China to conduct naval drills with Russia in East China Sea

China to conduct naval drills with Russia in East China Sea | Global politics | Scoop.it
China said on Wednesday it would conduct joint naval drills with Russia in the East China Sea off Shanghai in late May, in what it called a bid to deepen military cooperation. China's defense ministry did not give an exact location in the East China Sea, where Beijing is locked in an increasingly bitter dispute with Japan over the ownership of a group of uninhabited islets. "These drills are regular exercises held by China and Russia's navies, and the purpose is to deepen practical cooperation between the two militaries, to raise the ability to jointly deal with maritime security threats," the ministry said on its website. China alarmed Japan, South Korea and the United States last year when it announced an air defense identification zone for the East China Sea, covering the islands.

IMF Warns Ukraine: Fight For The East Or No Money | Zero Hedge

IMF Warns Ukraine: Fight For The East Or No Money | Zero Hedge | Global politics | Scoop.it
IMF approved the $17bn tranched loan to Ukraine last night, Gazprom gets paid; Ukraine gets its cash; and the door's wide open for the US and EU to pour more 'controlling influence' into the divided nation... Except there's one thing: IF UKRAINE GOVERNMENT LOSES EFFECTIVE CONTROL OVER EAST OF COUNTRY, $17 BLN IMF BAILOUT WOULD NEED TO BE REDESIGNED Which, roughly translated, appears to mean go to war with pro-Russian forces (and thus Russia itself if Putin sees his apparent countrymen in trouble) or you don't get your money!

It's not Russia that's pushed Ukraine to the brink of war

It's not Russia that's pushed Ukraine to the brink of war | Global politics | Scoop.it
Seumas Milne: The attempt to lever Kiev into the western camp by ousting an elected leader made conflict certain. It could be a threat to us all
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The reality is that, after two decades of eastward Nato expansion, this crisis was triggered by the west's attempt to pull Ukraine decisively into its orbit and defence structure, via an explicitly anti-Moscow EU association agreement. Its rejection led to the Maidan protests and the installation of an anti-Russian administration – rejected by half the country – that went on to sign the EU and International Monetary Fund agreements regardless.

Ukraine brings back conscription amid unrest in country's east

Ukraine brings back conscription amid unrest in country's east | Global politics | Scoop.it
Ukraine's acting President Aleksandr Turchinov has announced he is reinstating a military draft to help deal with the “deteriorating” situation in the country's east and south.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Ridiculous. The draftees he has now refuse to shoot, and those he means to draft will run away before they are captured for the army. Ukrainians don't want a civil war, and certainly not to die for Turchinov and his usurping cronies. The harder they come the harder they'll fall: the only thing they can do is nothing, or rather accept the federal solution. Otherwise they will accelerate chaos and lose the regions and the Ukrainian integrity. And the best they can do is to avoid listening to their US patrons, they are harbingers of disaster.
